The Junkers Ju 52/3m (nicknamed Tante Ju ("Aunt Ju") and Iron Annie) is without a doubt one the most famous civil & military aircraft in the history of aviation. The Ju 52's maiden flight was performed on 13 October 1930. It was initially designed with a single engine (the Junkers JU-52/1m); however, after a limited run of the Ju-52/1m. The design was soon adapted into the much more successful trimotor configuration in early 1932.
In 1932 there was a great deal interest surrounding new JU-52/3m, from the Bolivian airline Lloyd Aereo Boliviano. The airline, LAB after having much success with earlier types like the Junkers F-13, soon placed orders for the type. After the delivery of first two LAB JU-52s (named JUAN DE VALLE and HUANUNI); the two JU-52/3ms were commandeered, into the service of the Bolivian Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Boliviana).
During the 1932 to 1935 Gran Chaco War against Paraguay, the first three of the LAB (then operated by FAB) JU-52s (named JUAN DE VALLE, HUANUNI & CHOROLQUE). Were used in the role of Transportation & Medical Evacuation flights. The three Ju 52/3ms during the Chaco War had ferried close to some 40,000 Bolivian troops and 4850 tons of supplies.
After the war the JU-52s were returned to Lloyd Aereo Boliviano. Form then, the Bolivian would be used to transport Passengers. The airline would buy its fourth (BOLIVAR) and fifth (ILLAMPU) JU-52s. The type would be retired from LAB service in 1944. ILLAMPU was sold to the Brazilian Airline VASP (Viação Aérea São Paulo) in 1944. Which remain in service with VASP until 1955, when it was retired and sold for scrap.
This super tiny 1/200 scale JU-52/3m wears the colours the LAB Airliner called ILLAMPU circa 1937-1938. The kit be Zvezda is a quick & fun model to make of this legendary aircraft. It comes decals for the paint schemes of two/ three WW2 era Luftwaffe JU-52s. In my case I made my own DIY decals, for my model of a Lloyd Aereo Boliviano JU-52.
I will be making another model of a Bolivian JU-52, depicting the service of the type during the Gran Chaco War. That kit has yet to be made but in the meantime, you can enjoy this video on another Bolivian JU-52.
Good luck with all your ongoing projects & thanks for watching
