An interesting piece of history - From my father-in-law's logbook, Flight Sergeant, Howard Monk, RNZAF flew this aircraft NZ3136 on 22 March 1945, as part of the training unit mentioned and transitioning to F4Us. Howard recently passed away on March 24, 2024, at 100 years old. That would be 79 years and two days from flying this P-40.

Thank you so much. I am very happy to hear that you loved the look of this model. The reason why I went for an Airfix figure instead of the kits pilot. Is that I thought that the Airfix figure had a bit more detail.

I just finished this one myself. Naturally, I broke off the antennae. I'll need to glue it back. I'll also have to revisit the video for the part about DIY decals. Very nice work on that great looking aircraft. I enjoyed seeing this come together and painted. I have to ask, what was your ratio to thinning the paint for brushing. I love painting those little planes and don’t use an airbrush, but find it a little bit thick at times. Thanks for sharing.
@ShuttleFactoryScaleModels
@ShuttleFactoryScaleModels 5 ай бұрын
Thank You I am happy to hear you loved the look of the model. And enjoyed watching the video. As for how much I thin my paint. Its often about three drops of paint to a drop of thinner. In the video when I am doing the mottling, you can see I use a paint pallet and an eye dropper for this task. Not too thin like what I do in the mottling section. Just enough to get the paint flowing a bit easier. I also use soft synthetic hair paint brushes. Flat Heads for flat surfaces, with the strokes running from nose to tail, then wing root to wing tip. With the paint in two to three thin layers. I hope this is of some help to you.

@ShuttleFactoryScaleModels 7 ай бұрын
Thank you I am glad you liked it. Also, I am happy to hear you saw a CAC Sabre up close. Its always good news to hear that a historic aircraft like a Gloster Meteor is undergoing restoration to an airworthy state. And fear not you have not gone off topic by mentioning the Gloster Meteor. It’s kind of relevant to the topic at hand (in regards to the CAC Sabre). Do not forget that the Royal Australian Air Force flew the Gloster Meteor during the Korean War. Even though a few RAAF Meteors did shoot down a few MIG-15’s. The type was outclassed by the dreaded MIG-15. The RAAF requested to acquire the F-86 Sabre from North American, but there was such a high demand for the F-86. Both Canadair and the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation would acquire a license to build F-86 Sabre's, in both Australia & Canada. Long story short as soon as the CAC Sabre’s started arriving to RAAF squadrons from 1954 onwards. The RAAF retired its fleet of Gloster Meteors. Anyway, next time you are in Tauranga, you must go to the Classic Flyers Aviation Museum. Were you can sit in the cockpit of the F-86 as seen in the video. Also you can also go through the fuselages of a PBY Catalina & a B-17 replica. Thanks for watching

Very nice build. Out of curiosity, how much do you thin your paints?
@ShuttleFactoryScaleModels
@ShuttleFactoryScaleModels 7 ай бұрын
Thank You so much. I tend to use a few drops of thinner via a disposable eye dropper/ pipette. Mixed into a small pool of paint with a paint brush on a paint pallet. Its often thinned where the paint is free- flowing than paint that has come out of the tube/pot. And I often apply my paint in a few coats with plenty of drying between each coat. I hope this is of some help for you. BTW Also as Sic-fi & Horror Movie geek. I love your profile pic too. Roddy Rowdy Piper from John Carpenter’s THEY LIVE. If I'm not mistaken. That reminds me I need to give that another rewatch one of these days.

Thank you so much. You are so right it is a bit of an oxymoron to have an eye-catching camo scheme. Then again it seems appropriate for the F-86 Sabres of Jagdgeschwader 71 "Richthofen" to have rather outrageous colours on their aircraft. Guess they wanted to keep up that old German tradition of painting crazy colours over a fighter aircraft’s camouflage pattern. Also, I am happy to hear other larger channels like Greg's Models. Are still painting the odd model with the mighty brush. Will have to check that video out. Thanks for watching!
