ZZ Top was a working Texas band as far back as the late 60s--when I was a teen in 1968 I stood outside a frat house in College Station Texas and listened while the band played a gig inside. They have stayed together year in and year out, first achieving mega star status when the MTV music video era arrived, in itself a time that came and went and which the group has outlasted. I would call their music blues rock. They have many great songs--try reacting to "Jesus Just Left Chicago".

I was familiar with their original more bluesy music since the first album in 1971. This track reminds me of the early to mid 80s when video was king, MTV was gaining popularity and nearly every bar had a video jukebox.

ZZ Top was legendary, had radio hits, they were pretty true to the blues with some Tex-Mex in there, that didn't sell too well in mainstream early 80's, MTV was king and ZZ did This video, it went BOOM and they never stopped since...so glad you did this one...they have a lot of material out there, will take you places, Thanks for Your react...keep on Sister! is it just me but, why everybody talk so fast? lol They made it seem he had fallen asleep under that old truck and we are led to believe was all a dream...then he noticed he had the key chain! ZZ Top is the very essence of ... "COOL" ... the definition of the word "Cool" in the dictionary should say "See ZZ Top"! It's true amazing that with just a drummer, bass player and Billy Gibbons on Guitar can put such an fantastic sound out. I started listening to ZZ way back in the late 70's and they are still "ROCKIN" the house down. It does my heart good to see young people listening to REAL music.... great reaction to a great song.

ZZ Top could be classified as "Southern Rock", or "Blues Rock". The band got their start in the early-1970s. The lead guitarist and singer, Billy Gibbons, started out as a roadie for Jimi Hendrix. Johnny Carson once interviewed Jimi Hendrix on "The Tonight Show", and he asked him who he thought would be the next great Rock guitarist, and Hendrix stated that it was Billy Gibbons. ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame a few years ago.

Glad to see you finally got introduced to that little ol' band from Tejas. At one time I think they held the record for the loudest concert ever given. They had a ton of big hits just from the Eliminator album alone. If you haven't done so already, you need to check out Stevie Ray Vaughn. Their music is perfect for a long road trip where you can cruise along at 75 mph with the windows down (or the top down).

This brings back memories. I saw ZZ Top at Monsters of Rock in '85 and the band wanted to drive Eliminator (the car in this video, a chopped 1933 Ford coupe owned by the guitarist Billy Gibbons) onto the stage during their set. But the UK Health and Safety arseholes said it was too dangerous. So, the band, in a glorious "fuck you" moment had the car flown very low over the crowd suspended under a helicopter!!

Back then this song was one of the standards the DJs would play when asked some more rock oriented music. Yes, at that time they actually listened when people asked for music to play instead of artistic pretensions with a "show" with "mixes" and other rubbish instead of delivering good danceable songs.

Another good one from ZZ Top from the same time period is "Sharp Dressed Man". I remember in 1984 Saturday Night Live did a bit where they ran a Telephone poll during the show of preferred candidates for President. Along with the real candidates, the offered ZZ Top as one of the options to vote for. ZZ Top won by a large margin. They had a number of very good songs. Tube Snake Boogie, Tush, and La Grange are also pretty cool songs.

The reason why the album was called 'Eliminator' was because of the car itself. It was an 1933 Ford Coupe that belonged to Billy Gibbons (lead vocals, lead guitarist) and it was called 'The Eliminator'. Hand restored by Gibbons himself, the machine remains undefeated via drag-racing, and Gibbons once joked that the car was powered by old-school voodoo. He customized it in honor of the ZZ Top brand, and has since built another coupe known as 'Whiskey Runner', in honor of his pet-project Supersonic Blues Machine.
