ZZ Top is from Texas. In1989 DJ DMD (also from Texas) had a rap song called "25 Lighters". When ZZ Top's studio was being worked on they shared a recording house with a bunch of hip-hop artists. They got to be pretty good friends and ended up reworking the song. BTW, in Houston, dealers used to take Bic Lighters apart, remove the inside and fill them with crack. So yeah, this song is about slinging rocks.

the whole 25 lighters on my dresser reference is from the 70's and 80's.... That is how you bought and sold Coke in the clubs..... lol fun fact they would put the product in used up lighters to avoid suspicion.

Its ironic that I came to this tune "via" Scribecash. Saw her reactions to older rock and got inspired to watch her own videos. I'm an old "dirty dogs funky kings' style Top listener and may not have given this much more than a thought except that when I heard the song, it was thru Scribecash's fresh perspective. Thanks to the young dynamo for teaching an old dawg a new trick

Interesting. ZZ Top has been experimenting with the distortion both in voice and guitar at least since the 1980s. Check out Manic Mechanic, Hi-Fi Mama and a few others. For classic Top, start with La Grange and Blue Jean Blues

Ahem... Sixties. They literally toured with Hendrix. There would be no ZZ Top, or Texas blues without distortion.

@@ericmuschlitz7619 Correction: Billy opened for Hendrix with the Moving Sidewalks. ZZ Top formed after that band broke up. But you're right about the distortion. Billy has kept the method to his tone a closely guarded secret for 50 years. People try to piece it together, of course, and Billy himself perpetuates his own mythos, but it starts with a conversation he had very early on with BB King. Billy was trying to get that thick, fuzzy tone, and he concluded that he needed the thickest strings to do it... until BB asked him "why are you working so hard?" So he went 180 degrees the other way, and ever since has played on strings so thin he has to have them custom made.
