Hey! Great sound! How do you achieve this "guitar" and "bass" tone?
@felix_ennui

Thanks Mick! The "guitar" is Plaits -> QPAS -> DivKid Stereo Strip -> Desmodus Versio, if i remember correctly. The "bass" is just the Mother32.

@@felix_ennui Thanks for reply! So it's some mode of Plaits stereo filtered and EQd/distorted, right? Maybe you remember which mode of Plaits is used here? I'm relatively new to eurorack, but really interested in getting rock vibes from it as well.

Really like the fact that Moog is innovating; also recently with mavis... but THIS one is going to be a real classic synth. The relationship between drums and bass, the integration with euro rack and no "hidden features, button combinations" makes this thing a perfect and "nothing like it" synth.

So ... is that a DC motor thrown into a spring reverb module that I see here ? Speak of a weird way to achieve analog audio-rate modulation !! 😀 Not to mention the contact mike on the electric fan ...
@felix_ennui
@felix_ennui Жыл бұрын
The dc motor in the spring reverb is being sent a trigger making that trash can kick drum sound. On the fan I have an electromagnetic pickup being sent to a pitch shifting reverb on the ALM MFX. Got the electret microphone picking up the chimes going into the delay on the Koma Field Kit FX with the mix all the way up. Which is why a keen eye might notice a slight delay between the strike of the chime and the sound of it.
@goingmodular
@goingmodular Жыл бұрын
@@felix_ennui I had no idea that the current from a trigger signal was sufficient to drive a DC motor ! This is a surprise ! Would you happen to have an idea of the typical current intensity that can be drawn out of a CV output ? I have been searching for this information without success so far. I want to build a set of passive attenuverters for my Moog Sound Studio, but without knowing the output current (or the output impedance), I cannot determine what range of resistors I need for that. I guess I will have to do it by trial and error, otherwise.
@goingmodular
@goingmodular Жыл бұрын
@@felix_ennui As a side-note: I do not know which kind of protections are typically designed around CV outputs, but when driving a DC motor with a trigger signal, you may want to short the motor with a kickback diode. Otherwise, each time the motor stops, self-induction will send a reverse current into you CV output with the potential to fry something. Some machines will be more protected against that than others, but you probably do not want to discover empirically that your favourite synth was not protected against reverse current !
@felix_ennui
@felix_ennui Жыл бұрын
Thank for the tip! The manual had some examples of sending the DC motor a trigger signal so I assumed it was fine.
@goingmodular
@goingmodular Жыл бұрын
@@felix_ennui Then i assume they already protected the output with a diode in the core circuit. That’s good, but just be aware that it will not necessarily be true for any synth out there. These babies are expensive, you may want to look at a circuit diagram before trying the same thing with another machine. Plugging output in output on the other hand (the so-called “output to output patching technique”) seems to be pretty universally safe, from what I have seen. Keep up the exploration !

Cool piece: Garage rock is quite an unexpected genre for modular-synth-based music. This is a fun experiment ! And the visuals are top-notch too, as they often are in your videos. As somebody who tries and dedicates lots of efforts to the visual side of my music videos, I can relate and appreciate your work, although my own productions are much less ambitious as yours. Keep the great work coming !

Thanks! Im interested to see how this will be received being what it is. Its kinda my favorite voicing at the moment. Usually after I create a patch I unplug and start from scratch, but it took me awhile to disconnect this one. Sooo... there should be some more little jams coming with this voicing. I just have to shoot all the visuals for them. Thanks for the comments, I'll have to check out your vids.

@@felix_ennui Every time I come up with a new patch (especially on my 2600), disconnecting everything to start again is always an emotionally loaded moment ! And indeed, just like you describe, the more interesting the new experiment, the longer it takes me to finally discard it !

@@felix_ennui Sequencing the DFAM with a trigger sequencer is a great trick indeed. For a long while, I kept looking for a cheap way to do exactly that, but controllers such as Arturia's Beatstep were priced higher than I was ready to spend on that function alone. Until I found an ultra-cheap Behringer RD-6 analog drum machine that was on sale. Although I am definitely NO fan of early 80's analog drums sounds, I realised that this machine (and its likes) pack several independent trigger/gate outputs, while sporting individual audio outputs for each instrument that can easily be processed into just as many more independent triggers. For 80€, this gave me an 8-track trigger sequencer, which is way more than I will ever use ! At the same time, I almost NEVER use the drum sounds themselves, unless heavily processed to make them beefier.

Nice. I am always happy when I hear somebody playing musical harmonies on the SubH. Too often is it used (under-used ?) for abstract random polyrhythms sequences of little interest (to me). This is a wonderful instrument, but integrating it in songs with a more classical form is a challenge. But that is also what makes it so interesting as a composition tool.
@felix_ennui
@felix_ennui Жыл бұрын
The SubH can be tricky, I think it just requires a bit more time to get what you want out of it. Im currently working with the moog sound system and some eurorack fx, modulation, and utility modules. So hopefully I'll have some videos with those three coming soon.

@@felix_ennui This is pretty much the centre of my configuration too, except that I swapped the Mother for an ARP 2600 clone. I was never too thrilled by the one-oscillator architecture of the Mother (One oscillator ? Come on, this is 2023 !). The 2600, on the other side, is a beast ! Incredible to think this machine was designed in 1971 !

Cool video, i'm having a hard time making it work though. Everything is wired the same way (except for the erica) but as soon as i connect the BSP, the DFAM sequencer stops working I can get only the kick sound and the dfam red dot that usually goes through the step gets stuck in one position only and doesn't run. Any ideas? Does the Erica does anything besides de hh sound?

Hey hardminder, thanks for the comment. Yes, Erica is just making the hi hat sound. What do you have plugged into the ADV / CLOCK input on the DFAM? You need some sort of gate signal to advance the sequence to its next step.

@@felix_ennui First of al I really apreciate your reply. I forgot to mention that I copied your setup at 1:37 or so. So I assumed you had drum gate 1 going in your multi to the erica and to the dfam advance. I don't have a multi nor a erica but that shouldn't matter, I sent the gate 1 drectly into ADV/Clock. Am I doing something wrong?
