A few remarks: Internet+cell depends heavily on your packages. We pay 100 euros for two cell numbers with unlimited 5g (where available) data and a 200/20 fiber, and this incorporated a "subsidy" as we call it (epidotisi) of around 400 euros to use for a new phone or other products from a series of partners of the provider. The electricity cost went up during the power crisis of 2022-2023, but there were corrective moves from the government. Now, when you hear about electricity price hikes in Greece it is mostly the media taking a particular day that the price surged in the energy auctions in order to create political stir, media in Greece love to create drama, the opposition riding along. It is pretty affordable, as long as you use it prudently (ie not having your AC blasting at below 20 oC 24/7). Healthcare is free, even if you don't work or pay social fees, and still the monthly fees are pretty low for lower incomes in comparison to what you get. I pay around 20 euros a month for my quite heavy diabetes medication, my mother just finished her completely free chemo+radiation therapies after her also completely free and very fast breast cancer surgery. Also, when you hear people complaining about wait times, they are most probably living in Athens, which is a hillbilly trap, people from around rural Greece go there expecting to live the big city life and all they have managed to do is suffocate the city and themselves, including medical services (no foreigner in their right mind should come to live in Athens, unless it is imperative for their job, Greece has many MUCH MORE enjoyable places to live). We do have a problem with doctors going abroad or private in order to get more money, the state tries to hire more doctors and they don't come, but this is also something that the government tries to fix with raising salaries and guarantying accommodations in some places (air bnb has made it nearly impossible for doctors, teachers and police officers to find an affordable place to live when they are sent to islands). In general, as I have written in some of Daniel's excellent videos, Greeks are champions in complaining and entitlement for two reasons: we have romanticized other countries and how things work there and we still are nostalgic of the pre crisis era when governments gave abundant handouts with borrowed money and banks gave away loans easily for houses, cars and vacations. Fun fact, the people that complain a lot insult those of us who don't as people who are "comforted" (volemenos) meaning we are somehow paid from the current government or something like that, while it is THEM that actually complain because they or their families lost this "comfort" (volema) they were accustomed to in previous decades.

Xela is a great place for ex pats, it's still not too crowded as Antigua, Atitlan, Guatemala City etc but it is a very comfy, modern city with anything and everything you may want or need from the states or similar to the states (feels and looks like South Oregon or Northern California) but much more affordable and accessible, not to say cheap but a lot more reasonable. You are still very close to the Guatemalan Caribbean, the Central America pacific coast, beautiful volcanos, forests, jungles, Mayan and Colonial Spanish cultural , colorful towns, diverse climates and a wide variety of fun outdoor and explortion activities amidst natural and historical Wonders (like Precolumbian sites, unesco colonial and natural world heritage sites etc near) plus Guatemala borders 4 other very interesting countries to explore: México, Belice, Honduras and El Salvador (Nicaragua is also not far) so you are sort of in the hub and middle of all the best tourist and attractions in ancient Mesoamerica with plenty of good modernity and convenient comforts to meet most of your needs at very reasonable prices. 🌲🌴🌳🌋🦈🥑🐆🐓🩵🤍🇬🇹

There are too many people who think that Greece is a place you can go and do whatever you want with your money and the help of the EE and US bankers. Thousands of Europeans are taking the properties of the Greeks, their land, their lives. The call you make for others barbar to go and live in Greece, you know is dangerous. When the occupying governments gone, all these properties will be taken back and the tourists will lose their money. Greece its not what you know last years or imagine. Ask your wife to tell you about EAM, Laocratia and stop calling westerns.

half the doctors left Greece when their salaries were cut by 50% when austerity measures were instituted a few years ago. Unless you are dying or having an emergency, be prepared to wait. Canada style. Or you can go for concierge practices which charge extra. Actually Turkey has cheaper and better health services and a well developed medical tourist industry. Also, dont forget, bureaucracy in Greece is an art form. Unless you are fluent, you will learn the meaning of Byzantine regulations through exasperation and perspiration.

Americans who come to Brazil for the “free healthcare” should be ashamed of themselves. You are contributing to overcrowding and taking resources from citizens who don’t have access to the strongest economy in the world. A large number of Brazilians live on R$1400 / mo. As an American expat living in Brazil and have accompanied Brazilian family members into SUS (hospitals and Pronto Socorros) during the height of the Dangue season last year, I’ve witnessed the challenges faced by those who are providing and seeking care. I emplore Americans considering moving to Brazil to look for options in the Private system. I am paying less than $400 usd per month for me and my wife, and we are 60. SUS is an incredible system. It is heroic for Brazil, as a society, to provide these services to its citizens. The doctors and nurses I encountered doing an incredible job. Help them provide care in their country for those who need it most. The private system is there for us, as expats, as guests. Be respectful.

Floripa is expensive for Brazilian standards. People that want to live well work hard. Traffic is awful. And it rains a lot. Culture is not the best. We need to travel to São Paulo and Rio to get some. Nevertheless, it’s one the best places to live that I have been. Unfortunately, it has been filled with people looking for a dream, and finding a nightmare. Salaries are low. Opening a business? Competition is fierce. We only have one month for making money with summer rental: January. All the prices he gave are right. Except for the meals. Unless if you go to really cheapo restaurants. I spend at least US$10,00 in a nice per kilo. Coffee? 2 dollars. Hospitals are not that great. If you don’t have private health insurance you are not getting the exams fast you need unless you are dying. Public health is complicated. But is great. The best doctors work on the public system. And the best dentists. However, the materials they use, and the waiting list… you need health insurance. I love Floripa. My family is from here, and I live well. But as a city, there are better places in the state, and in the country: Blumenau and João Pessoa are my favorites. But if you want live well here, you need in reais, our money: 3500 for rent and condo fees, 2000 reais for groceries. That’s a 1000 US dollars. Everything else you need in life is after that. So you need at least 2000 for a decent middle class life. You can live for less? Of course. But 900 dollars is tough. Don’t bother.

Brazil is so big that if you travel through several regions that are far from each other, you may have the feeling that you have traveled to another country. The northern and west of the country has more influence from indigenous peoples, in the northeast region there is more influence from African descendants and in the states of the southern region (Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul) it has more influence from European descendants, in addition, the northern half is less developed and all this reflects in the behavior of Brazilians in each region. There is a lot of cultural difference between the regions of Brazil due to many different peoples and cultures interacting and influencing each other. In the north and northeast of Brazil there is practically no winter, it's hot all year round (at the height of summer it's VERY hot). There are not 4 seasons, but rather 2 seasons: one with a lot of rain and one with little rain. In the southern half of Brazil there are 4 seasons, and in the extreme south it can be VERY cold in winter (some regions high up in the mountains can even snow a little). In the states of the southern region (Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná), extratropical cyclones occasionally occur on the coast and tornadoes in the extreme west. At the moment the safest state in Brazil is São Paulo, followed by Santa Catarina and Minas Gerais.
