I am starting a kingdoms of men army for Mantic games Kings of War and I just ordered about 300 dollars' worth of miniatures.

I am planning on getting one of the kits to mix in with my Italian Allies for my Punic Wars Romans. Will mix in some Italian Shields and helmets as well of course. The double crest Hemlet reminds me of the Helmet the face on the Ksour Essef cuirass is wearing, in that it also is shown with a double crest like that.

So when it says 48 highly detailed figures on the box it actually means seven.
@hobbyspotnz28333 ай бұрын
Yeah essential the same poses but you change the arms and heads. You do get a bit of variation but I'd definitely recommend fusing them with the Athenian hoplite set.
@derek66313 ай бұрын
Do you do the same thing with cavalry bases?
@hobbyspotnz28333 ай бұрын
Good question, I trim them shorter so they can fit within the diameter of the round base and instead of doing the process you just saw I file that till it's almost paper thin. Then glue.
@gordcolter22523 ай бұрын
Have done similar with metals though I file the whole base to a sliver (more work, yes) before cutting (or at least cutting to separate feet) to avoid the platform shoes step and the file levelling of the feet; with metals, broken legs and the like are otherwise more problematic due to the stresses involved.
@hobbyspotnz28333 ай бұрын
Yeah I'm with you on that one. For metals I do the same I just run them over a large file and wear them thin.

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for! I've never had a Victrix kit but have been wanting to take the plunge, and after working with GW minis etc have been wary as some of the kits are very old now. This one seems like a great opportunity to give them a shot. Can you recommend the Early Imperial Roman range from Victrix? Also, do you remove mold lines ? I usually do this before assembling and is often the longest part, was wondering how easily they come off as they are quite prominent which is to be expected.
@hobbyspotnz28333 ай бұрын
Not a problem. Definitely worth the plunge these guys make the best historical figures in my opinion. Mold lines are very minimal they do the seems at the side of the body, I personally don't clean them up when I'm done painting it makes them anyhow. I have all the early roman kits and they are great. I do prefer the marching set as posed to the fighting set. But they are both great.
@legiox2173 ай бұрын
@@hobbyspotnz2833 thanks, I did take the plunge and am going to be putting together some EIR and Hoplites soon. I did go with the marching set as I thought they look very imposing ranked up like that

@@scottsharp3789 I worked with the new Greeks and Romans and they are pretty nice. It’s a little rough for the spears and thinner pieces, but I was pretty surprised at the detail for the cost. Not bad at all!

The crest that you were asking about is what we call a J crest. When categorizing crests we have 3 main types: the J crest, more archaic, very popular. The standard 'corinthian' crest, front to back, most commonly depicted and common through all eras. Then there is my favorite, the transverse crest, which goes side to side.
@hobbyspotnz28334 ай бұрын
Thanks very handy to know. I love the side to side one aswell. I saw a illustration of a moon themed hoplite with the J style crest and that's why I think I gravitate towards it so much.

This new sprue looks much better than the old victrix hoplite sprues (I have all of them, they are almost identical). pitty theres no extra command sprue with few more extra optios..

That was the only thing really that I would critic about the set having no command sprue but the figures are so nicely detailed.

Good review thank you. The figures look great, with a nice variety of equipment and well detailed. But while some may like the variety of body poses I would have preferred them all to be in a left shoulder forward and thrusting spear position.
@hobbyspotnz28334 ай бұрын
Thanks Paul, yeah I agree I myself lean more towards the static poses for ancients. I thought he advancing Romans where well done. I'm going to use a mixture between the Athenian kit and this one to get that effect.

Nice review. I've recently returned to NZ from the UK. Would you reckon that buying direct from Victrix would tend to be cheaper than using NZ retailers? I've seen the price of paints here and want to keep me other costs down!

Im all for buying local if you can but getting them from the UK is still good. They have two option for shipping one at $40 and one at $120. Depends on the size of the box. Only tool 2 weeks to get here though.

How did you place it in the clear stand? The instructions say not to glue it. But I think It’ll be quite wobbly. And did you tape it in during painting?
@hobbyspotnz28335 ай бұрын
I drilled out a slightly larger hole and glued it inside with super glue. I taped it up with paper tape before i undercoated. then i peeled it off.

Shade, Contrast, Ink. Why can't I just buy paints and dilute them with something? As a paint manufacturer, this is not acceptable. But if you are a buyer Then you can get tired of buying, say, 4 shades of red and then 4 times, in different variations. Someone tested how you can deal with this nonsense?
@hobbyspotnz2833 Жыл бұрын
Forsure you can do that it's all about time I think. Making your own is just that extra step which may take away some form of motivation. I'm not defending GW they certainly only make stuff to sell as apart of a business narrative, but some stuff they make is pretty good haha

I find the easiest way to paint metallics is treat it like a normal layer system, apply dark metallic add a black or brown wash , highlight the metallic again with base colour used in first step, then add another edge highlight of a light metallic. You can also dry brush it this method but it makes armour panels look odd, but works great on chainmail.
