To all future pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago, let me start by saying how exciting it is that you are considering embarking on this life-changing journey. As someone who, along with my spouse, has walked the Camino twice, I can wholeheartedly tell you that it’s an experience like no other-transformative, peaceful, and deeply personal. Before you dive headfirst into planning, you might be tempted to immerse yourself in the dozens of KZfaq videos that cover all things Camino from A to Z. While those videos are undoubtedly well-produced and filled with helpful tips, I’d like to gently recommend something that we’ve found to be true for ourselves: try not to overexpose yourself to other people's experiences before you’ve had the chance to live your own. There is something uniquely magical about arriving in a small village for the first time, discovering the beauty of a hidden chapel, or feeling the energy of a bustling cathedral along the way. If you watch too many videos detailing these stops ahead of time, you might lose some of the spontaneity and awe that makes the Camino so special. These videos can paint a picture, but they cannot fully capture what it feels like to walk those paths, encounter those people, and face your own challenges on the road to Santiago. Here’s what you truly need to know before you set off: How to Get There: Research the best way to arrive at your chosen starting point, whether it’s Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Sarria, or any of the other wonderful locations to begin your pilgrimage. When to Go: Consider the best time of year. Spring and fall are usually the most popular times due to the moderate weather, but every season offers its own unique charm. Packing List: Stick to the essentials! You don’t need much-light clothing, sturdy footwear, basic toiletries, and a few personal items. Remember, you will be carrying this on your back, so less is more. Guidebook Recommendation: Pick up a trusted guidebook to help you along the way. We personally found John Brierley's guidebooks to be particularly insightful and easy to follow. Pilgrim Passport: Obtain a pilgrim passport (Credencial del Peregrino) before you begin. You’ll get it stamped along the way at various churches, albergues, and cafes. It’s your proof of the journey and your ticket to receive your Compostela in Santiago. Booking Hotels: Download the Booking.com app and use it to secure hotel reservations if you’re planning to stay in private accommodations. It’s a great tool for peace of mind, especially during busy times on the Camino. Once you’ve covered these basics, the best advice I can give you is: just go. The Camino will guide you. Let the experience unfold naturally, and allow yourself to be surprised and inspired along the way. Everyone’s Camino is different-there’s no right or wrong way to walk it. While I have deep appreciation for the many content creators who have invested so much time and effort into sharing their own pilgrimages, I humbly suggest that you save watching those detailed videos until after you’ve completed your own journey. This way, you’ll be able to fully reflect on your experience and connect more deeply with what they’re sharing. Buen Camino! Enjoy every step.

Very nicely put.... I did zero research on my first camino... I didn't even know there were videos on KZfaq about it...I still don't do any research or watch other videos. I didn't even know what camino I was going to walk on my last camino... I decided on the plane just before landing in Bilbao ;)

I start my CF in St Jean Pied du Port on 5 October and hope not see see ANY snow at that time. Would prefer no rain either BUT from what I have watched that is very unlikley. I wil cope either way lol. I did a run here in Tasmania called the Triple Top Mountain Run where I encountered it all - never agail lol - was only 18 km but scarred me for life (for that run anyway). Was my third and final time! Am guessing you keep all the stresses behind the scenes because you present a calm and considered view that shows and gives confidence to the viewer. Actually have watched all your later videos before this one cropped up - love them all

I speak Spanish so it is not a problem for me, but mostly I called ahead as I was walking longer stages than the regular stages. Normally I don't bother calling ahead if i am not doing a longer stage.

Hi, Rolf. I noticed you walked more than 30km a day many times while doing drone videos a lot. I have an aging partner who cannot walk more than 20-23 km a day on French way last Oct-Nov in 2023. We both hated the last hour to Zubiri, but enjoyed first 2/3 of the route as we paced ourselves to a shorter distance each day. We had rain almost every day. But it was memorable. Do you think Northern route is more challenging than French one? And, do you reckon there are many accomodations still open in September-October season? Was it hot in late Aug? I am no good in heat over 27C. And, thank you for the great vignettes you share with us. I cant imagine how hard it was to film them and lots of tight editing job. Really appreciate your input. From New England

Hi Ethan, The Norte is not very much more difficult than the Frances. It is quite a bit cooler than the Frances as you are closer to the coast. I walk more hours and further as I don't like to linger around the Albergues all too long, but most people like arriving early. There should be plenty of rooms available. Hope this helps.

Congrats on your Camino and the video! I will be doing the Sanabrés late in Aug and early September. This will be my sixth Camino (plus a pilgrimage on the Via Francigena in Italy). Regarding the Sanabrés, I wonder how many pilgrims you met before reaching the 100 km mark to Santiago. From the video, it seems to me there were very few people (even taking into account the fact that you must have been walking in late autumn or even winter). On the Galician albergues I have to say the Xunta has made a very good job modernizing and upgrading them, you might have seen them some ten years ago!

I only booked the one in San Sebastian in advance as I arrived by train from Madrid very late. Also I would recommend booking the one in Gernika because there are few accommodation options. Else it us best just to show up... it's more of what the Camino is about. The Granja La Troupe in Bilbao and the Albergue in Novellana are exceptional.

@rolfscaminos
@rolfscaminos Ай бұрын
The footware really depends the season. I was glad I had my boots on the muddy sections on the VLP. But trail runners are good enough if you don't mind getting wet feet. The VLP is 80 trails... the Norte on the other hand is 80 to 90 % asphalt so you definitely don't need boots for it. I wish you a Buen Camino!
