So new tech isn't necessarily better, if the masters aren't good enough. Very interesting insight, into the process...

Film vs digital, Film actually has a very high resolution up to 8k or more. when you use digital the resolution you record at is all you get.
@clintonweir7609Күн бұрын
It seems like this problem will keep happening. We shoot in 4k, we can't upscale to 8k or 16k. We shoot in 16k, we can't convert it to VR. We shoot a movie in VR, we can't add smell or interactivity. We make a fully interactive VR film that engages every sense, but it's still not The Matrix. We create The Matrix, complete with life support system for our physical bodies and reincarnation for our avatar, we forget we're in The Matrix and have to rebuild technology from sticks and stones all the way back to the point where we can create a Matrix within the Matrix. Round and round for all eternity because, oh yeah, I forgot to mention, in the base reality layer we're immortal beings.

So, VTE, at which point does this VIDEO (and yes, it's digital) supposedly answer the supposition of "why some films can never be remastered," despite that: 1. the things you were talking about with lower resolution were remastered anyway, and 2. those aren't films anyway? Then why wouldn't this be more like, "Why some movies probably will never be remastered (because they're already shot and edited in the highest resolution and best storage mediums that anyone in the foreseeable future will care about having a remaster of; but also: never say "never")?

VTE, why wouldn't those middle-era movies benefit from a remastering that uses the AI-based upscaling that we have now (where the AI "brain" _creates_ additional detail for interpolation of the higher resolution)?

Oh, interesting that they went back to shooting on film for 4K video even though by that time there were already 4K and higher (8K+) video cameras.

Here's your first mistake: your fake "comparison" between what you call "video," "digital," and film. Electronic imagery with at least a certain minimum resolution and as a set of a minimum number of frames is video whether it's digital or analog. So your "video vs. digital" doesn't make sense. There's analog video and digital video; not "video vs. digital." So with _digital VIDEO_ you can count the lines too... in both dimensions. Why do you think all these presentations right here on this site are called VIDEOS?

No worries, AI will be able to fill in resolution detail. Further down the line, I expect TV's to be able to do it on the fly too. Maybe in a decade It'll be possible to punch in George Lucas' original vision for the sequel trilogy and see a (hopefully good) AI version of that.

While STILL Standard Definition, DVD absolutely SMOKED home videotape (Beta or VHS) Home videotape was no where close to "Broadcast quality" SD, DVD was. When I first got a DVD player, I could not believe that I was able to tolerate VHS for so long, LOL. I long ago digitized my personal ("home movies") tapes to DVD. The video still looks like crap because they are forever stuck at VHS resolution.

A colleague of mine rescanned the O negs of the original trilogy for the versions of what you see today both in theatrical re-release and HD and UHD video. The original Star Wars negative was thrashed. 20th was not prepared for the film's popularity and was striking new film elements to fulfill the demand for prints as the IP and IN elements were constantly wearing out. The scanning and digital repair process was done at Lowry Digital. Lowry created a process to remove and add back grain and increase the resolution of images without what amounts to adding aperture correction on horizontal and vertical lines as done in the past. The process uses the different information from adjacent frames (the grain in each frame is in a different position) in a shot to augment the resolution of all frames in that shot. 35mm film doesn't always have 4K resolution, particularly opticals. When restoring films in this manner, the disparate elements are brought together by adding back resolution to match and making the grain structure uniform. Lowry was also able to increase the resolution of 35mm film for 70mm 15 perf IMAX film presentations. It was worlds better than a blowup using the photochemical process.

Rewatched my HP and Nolan collection in HDR on that new OLED iPad, had a blast! In fact most of my stuff on iTunes has either an HDR remaster or a native version. Mine is a highest grossing movies collection though, so maybe there’s a correlation there

Crazy enough, there is not much difference between a 2K and a 4K scan for a majority of 35mm film stocks. It's almost indistinguishable in a lot of cases. I personally analyzed 4K and 2K scans of some negatives for a few Marvel films and that is what I found to be true.

I have Star Wars (1977) on 4K. It astounded me, that after watching that movie for the last 47 years, that I could now see the imperfections of the paintwork on Vader's helmet. Nice Star Wars style. screen wipe edit by the way.

@Paul71H4 күн бұрын
2:50 I *do* remember them that way. The original Star Wars trilogy looked like they were in high resolution when they were shown in theaters. Perhaps the people who don't remember them that way are from the generation that grew up watching those movies on VHS tapes.

3 years ago in December I saw Diehard projected from 70mm film (UK) and the dynamic range in shadows and colours was amazing🎉 and that was a red carpet print, film premiere print only used a few times... So it was very clean and sharp! 2 years ago I went to see diehard projected from 35mm film and it had film tears, splits, and damage...that was a screening print that was shown over and over in 1988 in 1 or more UK cinemas! dynamic range was great but suffered from the overall damage. I also noticed 28days later is available as a 4k bluray when 98% of that film was shot on standard def digital cameras, the end jet 'SOS' scene was shot on film... So having 28 days later blown up to 4k I personally think that should NOT have been done... HD yes... To avoid DVD macro blocking. I used to work for Deluxe digital in London soho as an encoder for DVD mainly for old dr who transfers... And sometimes the BBC would ask us to upscale an old period movie to HD because they didn't want to rescan the original film to HD... It actually went onto bluray... It looked garbage, this was around 2013😐

Some people still think, the old analog times were bad and ugly with bad picture and sound. Makes me laugh again and again. Cinema is great since the 70s, besides the added noise/defects by the repeated usage of the film. People just see what TV/home devices can do.

In my honest opinion, this video could have been much shorter. Like: these movies shot on 35mm = higher resolution than originally scanned. These other movies shot digitally at lower than 4K resolution. So no. End.

I'd be curious if the grain size in film and them not lining up 1 to 1 was also a major factor. Imagine copying pixels but every third pixel bleeds half way into the fourth and blends its properties into its own..
@gamecubeplayer9 күн бұрын
macroblocking & chroma subsampling will blend the pixels together anyway

Additionally, even if a studio wanted to go through the expense of re-rendering CGI visuals, sometimes the rendering files just aren't available. This is what happened for Babylon5; the computer which contained the original effects data had a fatal hard disk crash. And they'd have had to re-build an Amiga system with a Video Toaster to render them (granted, building a brand new Amiga isn't as difficult as it used to be). And I don't know if Video Toaster could even render to 4K resolution, which would mean having to port the effects data over to newer software/hardware.
