I prefer not to travel with my Sony a7iv (too heavy with the 50mm Zeiss). Going to try the a6400 and a smaller lens.

I'm a hobbyist who does mostly landscape and city life and cityscape photography. I have done lots of reasonably priced tours, and they have all been grood experiences. The groups ranged from 3 to 6. I usually combine a tour with a longer trip. City photography I do on my own. I use the tours to get to out-of-the way locations so I don't have to deal with renting a vehicle and driving on sketchy or dangerous roads, or being alone in a remote location in a foreign country. The tour leaders have all been very knowledgeable, offering tips and suggestions to improve our images, and they often take us to areas they haven't been before to see if there is anything there worth photographing. I enjoy interacting with other photographers and learning from them. You would be amazed how different workshop participants can produce totally different images at the same location.

I haven't done any real tours, but have been to some studio meet-ups. I'd really like to have the time and money to join some of the smaller tours I've seen. I think having someone local who know where everything is can be a huge benefit.

I’ve done a few. If you pick the right leader and the right destination, they’re a useful experience. They can also be a way to see places that are hard to travel in (for example Myanmar). They’re also great fun if you get the right one.

I have done small, “local” photo tours just to photo-scout… particularly in areas that are considered not supper safe. Like hiking in to a new (for me) “ridge line” or “downtown night” photography… then coming back for my own enjoyment

Never do photo tours or workshops. Travel, street, and documentary photography, what I do, is not a teamwork. If photographers want to socialize, they should join a dance club and dance whatever everybody else, dances there. Certainly, everybody does whatever they like to do and if they like what the other 20 or so photographers do and have all the same images, they join a tour or a workshop. "I never join any club where they want me to be a member" WA

I don't necessarily agree with everything you say, though my own thinking is along the same lines as yours. But, I also think for people for whom photography is a hobby, it's also a great way to make friends. Not everyone likes to dance 😋 and photography doesn't mean the same thing to all people. :)

Hi Mitchell! Your thoughts and insights are always great! I completely agree with your ideas about photo tours, even though I've never had the opportunity to be on one so far. I'd like to, for photography is a hobby to me, and I consider myself a photography enthusiast. With limited resources, especially time and knowledge about the places, I suggest adding another important factor about photo tours: the price. Usually, they´re expensive or very expensive, charged in dollars, euros, or whatever other strong currency. For instance, I´m from Brazil, and I get paid in R$ (reais), so you can imagine the problem...Anyway, thank you again, and enjoy your journey in Brazil!

True... BUT... you can look to join local tours led by Brasilian photographers. Though Brasil ain't cheap either. :) But, sure, being from outside the few "privileged" areas of the world makes things more difficult.

You are one of the "youtubers" or influencers that I have on a list were your talent and quality is in the top best BUT because of that or other reasons you don't create content for social media as often. I have found other cases like you and I think like me, were we have the talent but we are not apt for the algorythm, only a few know about you instead of thousands or millions that follow lower talentless influencers or photographers. And yes, I can freely with 100% confidence say there are talentless photographers that are extremely famous, popular even when their work is garbage. Is your lack of posting driven by some mental condition like ADHD? Lack of executive action from the brain? Does it take you everything you have in you to create content and that's why you don't do it often? Or are you just fine with what you have and don't want things outside your current needs and that's why you are just living a good life without wanting or desiring more things? I truly wonder what do you think about this. The people on my list of talented people that attempted social media always gets shorter. Most of them simply quit content creation. I guess because they just found jobs that pay well without having to "dance like a monkey" here. Now I saw you posted this video after "years". I truly wonder what do you think about creating content for social media. What place this has in your life. Money? Luring clients for other things like mentorship or hiring you as a photographer? Or do you truly expect someday the algorythm will "discover" you? I had held myself from creating a KZfaq channel because quality means nothing to social media algortyhms and the audiences educated and smart enough to distinguish quality or talent or good art are a minority that will almost certainly never find me in an ocean of content.

Very loaded question. I've been meaning to create mote, but... it's not easy. I think there are some people who are creative and their brain just works differently. We are not good with structure. We're good with spontaneity. Good at adapting. But, routine and structure... it makes me depressed. However, I realise that this is needed for any kind of success. I AM also very happy to just enjoy life. Life is so good the way I live it. I just want to continue doing what I do. You can't really put a price tag on that. I make enough not to worry. OF course I'd love more $, it means more freedom. Before the pandemic I was really comfortable financially. Things are still ok, but not amazing financially. Sometimes videos help with that. Sometimes they open up opportunities. But you see, even this video, it has "lens" in the title. I had to do a certain angle for it to get people to watch. If I had it my way, I would not even do this, well, maybe I would every now and then because I love sharing my experiences, but, I am working on makign the kinds of videos that I want, not giving a shit about views, experimenting. We'll see. As far as talentless photogs, often they are very good presenters, great personalities. I think it's not only about who's the best photographer. I try to learn from everyone. Anyway, thank you for your comment. It's an interesting question. I think about it often myself. You know, relatively speaking, 67k subscribers might not be much, BUT... compare that to how much a magazine publications gets seen OR exhibitions, things like that, and it's amazing. We're still in amazing times. If I can make enough money to keep doing this and just having enough freedom, I can't complain. I am a relatively free person. I get to be with my family everyday. I get to see my daughter grow. I teach her things. It's such a fufulling life. For me, the only purpose of "fame" would be to get more access and to meet more interesting people. Otherwise, I think it's a burden .

@@mitchellkphotos Thank you for replying and sorry if my english is not good enough, maybe the words I choose sometimes give another meaning to what I write. I didn't get a notification on your reply but decided to come back today to see if someone had commented. I'm glad I did. So, basically you do these videos because they truly give some sort of monetary benefit or might bring you opportunities even when they have not that big of a reach yet. Or perhaps you are building something for the future or betting that they will someday go viral or you could sell the concept to a production company or streaming site? I have had this idea as well but this is also a bet that seems so far fectched to me that I never do anything to achieve it. Only ideas written and stored. And partly because when I saw others do similar ideas I see them not thriving or failing and fading which makes me think that perhaps talent or quality is not the key but investment, sufficient amount of money for marketing and rich people connections. Since 2014 I wrote and recorded content similar to the one in your channel, but never posted anything, teras of videos of travels in my country doing street photography and landscapes and such, talking to the camera but never no one seeing what I said. Just sad. Now 10 years later I'm thinking on posting even if I get nothing out from it. That's why I started following you, for inspiration, just as I have followed others for the same reason and to see which ones thrived and which ones didn't. The less telented thrived A LOT. The talented ones faded away or got stuck never growing. 67k subs are A LOT but I was comparing it to the big influencers that are less talented, less experienced but they got born with charm, charisma, luck, no psychological traumas, no childhood abuse that for one can foster great art but on the other hand can cripple you to the point where only after you die the world might see your art pieces or ideas. Usually people that focus on talent or experience or raising skills don't care about charisma or social skills and struggle with emotions, that's why I think the talented are not good influencers. Even the best photographers in the world have a micro following. Also museums or magazines like you mentioned, they have micro followings but they still make money, in other traditional ways of course. Relationships relationshios relationships, the one thing I hate the most, kissing ass, being a hypocrite. I was just wondering how you thought about this because I live in a small town in a developing country where I have no one at my level to talk about these topics to learn and perhaps improve. Now I think I see your perspective and I will add it to my consciousness to see if I can make something good out of it. Again, thank you for taking the time to reply. I apreciate it a lot. I consider you one of the best on this platform, on the top 10. Your quality and story telling is just wonderful. I truly wish you recieve somehow all the money you want because I know you would make an amazing use of it.

Hi Mitchell, I appreciated the perspective you shared in your video, and the fact that you described the usability of MFT raised a question for me and I wonder what are your thoughts on the matter. Will a Panasonic LX100 perform well in those situations as it also has the MFT sensor and a zoom 24-72 mm lens (I think that being the equivalent on 35mm) with F 1.7. Have you had a chance to work with that camera, will there be lesser quality due to the zoom lens optics vs. a 35 mm prime !?

Hi Mitch. Good to see you out and about again. I travelled for 7 weeks in the UK last Christmas with just my Sony a7 and 28mm f2 Sony lens. There were only a couple of times I wished I had a longer lens, and I took some photos that will remain among my most cherished for the rest of my life. I also have a 35mm and am thinking about getting a 50 just to change things up, but the 28 is a super lens. One of the best purchases I ever made. I keep toying with upgrading the body, but that’s a way off for my budget. 🤣 Safe travels.

Good to have you back with this great video, Mitchell! I am curious to watch your travel films of course, but please-please make sure you continue to educate people on photography skills! You stand out as an educator and I think it would be such a waste to spend your time sitting in front of a video editor in your camper. I've seen so many of the great travel videographers disappearing, joining production companies, burning out or going into gear review business. I guess because video is very resource and time demanding, not necessarily a one man show. (Talking of travel/image videos, my absolute favorite is @Brandon Li, make sure to check his short movie 'Morocco Arise', it is amazing) But again, you are natural born photographer, I certainly want to hear more of your thoughts on that :)

I always love your photos and videos. You mentioned shooting with silent shutter for some of the shots. Do you shoot from the hip or some other discrete manner? I always feel a little weird taking pictures of people and wonder how you manage that. Thank you for your video. First time I have seen your work. Would love to take a trip like yours but appreciate you sharing. I’ve recently added both the A7CII and A7CR to my kit for travel to downsize. On the A7CR I’m trying the new Sony 24-50/2.8 G since I do like shooting at different focal lengths. On my A7CII I’m also using the FE 35/1.8. I’m a big fan of 28, 35, and 40 but the f/1.8 aperture draws me to the 35mm. Thank for your time and take care.
