M5 = 1965 on the case and M6 on the movement main plate. Love the styling and especially the luminous hand shape. The rotor is two metals, led and steel. Add moisture and you get intracrystalline corrosion. The lead suffers and swells with white crystals forming. Good job and thanks for posting.

I think the bigger balance wheel is there for when the wearer has their fingers on the watches hands, otherwise the finger pressure might stop the movement entirely.

Just found your channel. I love watch repair/restoration videos. With the utmost respect I really enjoy that you are more on the novice side of the hobby compared to others on KZfaq and you don’t yet own the more expensive tools. You make it work in different ways which is awesome and inspiring. I hope to be able to start the hobby one day and watching you makes it seem even more obtainable. Thank you for your videos!

Thanks so much! I am glad this all resonated with you! When I started it was kind of overwhelming, but little by little it became really fluent feeling. I think it really only took 3-5 watches to really understand what’s going on. Then all the little things you’ll spend a lifetime getting better at. I started on $15-30 USD watches with tons of stock available online so if I botched it I had backups. I hope your “one day” comes very soon!

At the time of recording I found a source stating the date code was 1949, however after doing a deeper dive I discovered multiple sources stating it was a 1943 model. The “X” as well as the “D” in the serial number indicate 1943. Super cool knowing the year of production! Thanks for watching, it means a ton! Also for the washing process I used Luquinox as the cleaning solution and did a couple wash cycles followed by an IPA 99% soak. Then I dried the parts. I didn’t go from dirty water to dry like it may seem lol.

Great eye, there’s a good chance (it’s right before they began phasing it out). I have a meter on my tools to order list! Based on my research it’s fairly safe to work with if you’re careful and take some precautions (which I always try to do). I’ll update this once I get a reading in the near future. Thanks for watching! Update: I finally received a Geiger counter and it’s at normal room levels (12-15 CPM in my case) so it appears it’s just a good replication of the color!

Good job. Taking the balance assy out as early as possible is a good tip for new folks. Unless you have an endless supply of parts, you must be careful with it. And as you showed, you'll sometimes need to work your way towards it, removing other parts. I use a razor blade to get under it to lift it off. Some staffs will break with the slightest pressure from trying to pry it up with a screw driver. As far as removing the crown/stem on watches like this; I just pull the crown out to the setting position, put tweezers (that will fit) between the crown and the case, tilt them a little to pop the crown off. BTW, your mainspring looked broken.. when you removed it, the end was still in the barrel 16:58. Sometimes a mainspring barrel will have a bridle that a normal mainspring can pull along but I didn't see a riveted tab on the end of your mainspring 17:08 so I'm guessing the part in the barrel broke off the mainspring.

Note not all watches have a split stem don’t try this on all watches! You can usually do some quick research to figure this out or in this case there is no way to remove the movement from the casement with removing it (no removal case back). Also I have learned since filming this the tool’s name is a “Presto tool” (model name from the main manufacturer Bergeron) or generically called a “hand removal tool” useful to remove canon pinions, hands, and more.

I think I misunderstood your question, to expand I’m not sure how they would assemble these with scale at the factories. It would seem you either would need incredibly skilled workers or some sort of template as you mentioned to get these in there with any speed! I believe newer parts would also stand much easier because tolerances would be less worn with use!

Shrinking the crystal? What kind of BS is that.
@OldWatchRestorations

The crystal is a term for the clear glass like face of the watch. The circumference is decreased by placing inward pressure on the rim of the crystal with the tool so it can fit into the watch casing.

The crystal on a 30 Jewel Bulova is plastic, that particular watch the movement comes out the back, not the front. As you have to push in the button or undo a screw on the movement itself, which will pull the crown and stem out. I know as I have my own store. Where I restore, refurbish, clean up vintage watches. And bulova happens to be one of my favorite watches. So please, if you’re going to spread information for people, and try to teach them something. Please make sure you are correct and what you are trying to teach.

@@carsfabio you can watch my entire 40 minute video where it comes out of the dial side. The rear is not removable on this particular model, some of the 30 jewels (I believe) did have a removable back this is not one of them. It absolutely has a split stem and no button to release the stem. I spent 10 hours researching and filming this movement this month. I’m just trying to share the enjoyment I’m having as I learn and grow in watchmaking and hopefully inspire others to pick up the craft.

To disassemble these "dollar watches" rotate that ovel shaped piece next to the hole below the stem. You will then see the end of the pivot of what you called the setting lever. Reach in that hole with a pick or angle tipped tool and pull up on the setting lever. By rotating that oval piece to the side it will allow the setting lever to lift up. This allows you to pull out the stem. Then remove the entire movement from the case, remove the dial. This gives you access to the click and you can let down the power. These types of watch are not the best for beginners to work on because of the way they were made (as cheaply as possible). They weren't really meant to be serviced like a traditional pocket watch. Top and bottom plates on later models were even riveted together on some further negating serviceability.
