Where do you get your rivet supplies?
@JustJaniАй бұрын
Hi, I get my crystal rivets from Chair and Chisel. I generally only use 4mm and 6mm sizes. Just as a reminder, drill bit sizes for crystal rivets are: 4mm rivet = 1/16" bit and 6mm rivet = 7/64" bit. The hole is small bc you will use your center drill bit to drill a countersink so your rivet sits nicely. The rivet setting pliers are from Flatwearable. Nice video. I’m new subscriber here. I have a cat that likes to get in my videos too. His names Gus. I’ve never tried annealing or softening silverplate forks. I always thought that it would mess up the silver plating on the surface. I’ve made many fork bracelets with the tines intertwined like yours. Have you ever tried electrolysis to replate your flatware? I’ve been thinking about looking into it as I can smooth a tine that gets a little chewed up but then the silverplating sometimes looks bad. Thanks for sharing!
@JustJaniАй бұрын
Hi, Sorry for such a late reply. You can overdo it with the annealing and ruin your silver plate. Use the "sharpie trick" and they should be annealed just right. I have never tried to re-plate my silverware, but I saw a video where a lady did hers with a homemade set up. Hers came out great.

Hi, The plastic tray, rollers, and pins are part of a kit called a Bender Press. There are several different kits you can get, they also have used ones. You buy an arbor press at Harbor Freight and put the kit on it. Also, join flatware/silverware bending Facebook groups. There is a lot of good info., and some ppl selling their used bender presses. When initially bending the tines I am having an issue with bending them without turning the tine. Are you using the baleing pliers on the flat side of the fork or on the edge? I can't get the smooth bend without the tine of the fork going into different directions. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
@JustJani3 ай бұрын
Hi! Sometimes the tines just do that to you, especially the flat ones. You'll need to flatten as you go. Here are 3 things to try. You can bend a little, stop and tap it out with a hammer, bend more, tap it out, and so on. Another thing you can do is make your own tool to turn the tines as you go. You can take something, like an old screwdriver, cut the end off, and cut a "slot" into the end that will just fit over a fork tine. Use it to bend as you go. You can also look at Joakim Forsberg's fork bending tool. I can't recommend it bc I have never been able to get much out of it, but maybe watching his videos will help you. Good Luck! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qt1_n7OYyrqlYI0.htmlsi=UmjEVWSOg0sL2zp2

Hello Jani. I just purchased new everyday flatware and wondered what to do with the old. OMG am I glad I found you. I am an avid crafter and also spend lots of time in my gardens so am looking forward to making lots of your projects for my garden and as gifts to my fellow gardener friends. I love what you've done. My old flatware isn't as nice as some of yours so I'm going to be watching out at thrift stores for some interesting pieces. I am now watching all of your videos!! Have a wonderfully creative and safe day. Update: Just tried my first bug like the one in this video. Do you use silver only? My fork was not silver, just everyday stainless or whatever they use for cheap stuff, and either you have super human strength, and I'm a strong country girl lol, or your stuff is much softer than mine. I broke a leg off and there was noooo way it was going to curl around like yours did. I love the metal straw idea but even my husband, who is a 6'4", 250lb. heavy equipment mechanic, could not get my fork to bend easily. Am I just too cheap and need to find nicer materials?
@JustJani4 ай бұрын
Hi! Thank you! If you are using regular flatware you’ll have to anneal it. That will soften the metal and allow you to bend it easier. Most of the flatware in my videos are silver plated. They are softer, especially if they’re really old. You sound awesome and I hope you have fun with this! How come all your handles have solder in them? All my handles have plaster in them, or mixer of sand and some sort of resin/wax that crumbles when smashed with hammer. Some has rubber resin material.
@JustJani5 ай бұрын
Mine only have solder where it is held onto the blade. Further up inside I have had plaster, pitch, etc.. Did you heat yours to remove the blade or just cut it off? Maybe you bypassed the solder.
@Macky11015 ай бұрын
@@JustJani I hammered them out. And then had to scrap out the inserts. Too much work!!! Like almost 10 min per knife. I am thinking about buying a bandsaw and cutting them out. Or maybe a dremel. But bandsaw would be easier.
@JustJani5 ай бұрын
It only takes a minute to heat them enough to melt the solder, but it can be messy, too. I’ve cut them with a band saw too. Just depends on what you’re making.
@Macky11015 ай бұрын
@@JustJani I think bandsaw might be the best option. Just scrapping for $. No one buys sterling flatware for use anymore. They only buy the newest Iphones. Too bad such nice cutlery have to get destroyed.

@JustJani6 ай бұрын
Hi! I don’t clean mine unless they’re really dirty and then with just soap and water. There’s no point in cleaning well just to hammer or bend, they’ll just get dirty again. If you’re going to solder, your joints must be clean! For that I use steel wool. Hope this helps! Jani
