Great flip through! I look forward to seeing how this works for you throughout the year. I think the how-to guide is sold separately because you only need it once. You don’t need to print it with every unit. But I agree, it’s a bit odd that it’s sold separately. If you go to their “Catalog” link and look at their planner, you can see a planner page for Writer’s Workshop, which I found helpful.

The closest IKEA is two hours away from us. We usually go a couple of times a year and we have so many IKEA storage units holding school supplies, books, and toys. I would be in so much trouble if it were just down the street 😂

I’m wondering how does BYL handle language arts specifically the book studies? Do you focus on literary terminology or just comprehension questions?
@thishouseofwalls13 күн бұрын
It follows a very Charlotte Mason method. The reader is the book that the kids read on their own. They sometimes will use a narration card for the book. The literature book is done as a read aloud and has vocabulary and discussion questions that are to be talked about. There is also copy work and dictation from the literature. We add in extra writing and grammar.

Did you do the rebinding on your own? Any tips you could offer for that?
@thishouseofwalls13 күн бұрын
No I took it to Office Depot. I have a small binding machine but I prefer to just use it for things that I print at home. In the store they can cleanly cut the binding off for me.

I've seen a couple of reviews on Amazon saying that the paper is poorer quality for the 2024 planners, compared to previous years. I like the latest layout, but the quality of the paper would sway me to an earlier version... what's your opinion on the paper quality?
@thishouseofwalls14 күн бұрын
That hasn't been the case for me at all. I have written all over this planner with pens, pencils, and felt-tip pens. I think that the paper is great quality. Like last year, the felt tip leaves a little shadow but definitely doesn't bleed through. I have been really impressed with the quality!

Are you a part of a secular co-op? I don’t think my area has one :( there is a seemingly wonderful Christian co-op that I’m tempted to join but I want a secular one.
@thishouseofwalls15 күн бұрын
Yes, we are! There is really only 1 in our immediate area. Definitely double-check. If not, look into what makes that co-op Christian. I know some can be really faith-based while some are more relaxed. Good luck!

Hello mam, my son is in the process of changing schools, currently passed out of 2nd grade , He was bumped up to grade 2 skipping grade , the principal and teachers told us that he is doing well above his grade level , Me and my wife are are very confused now if our son should repeat 2nd grade or transition to 3 rd grade , if you could guide us if the level of education gets difficult , we are confident his roots are very strong but just dont want him under perform and lose motivation , we would really appreciate your opinion thank you , Worried parents.

Unfortunately there is no easy answer here. But I can give some advice on where to start. Each state has different laws and requirements so find what those are first. Some states have a lot more requirements while states, like mine, just need to know that you are homeschooling and that the kids are progressing. Look for Facebook homeschool groups in your area because they often have lots of information. As to where to start your student- that is completely up to you. One of the joys of homeschooling is that we can fit the school work to our children. Do some research on curriculum you all might like and that could work with your state requirements. Just about all curriculum companies will have placement tests so you can put your child on the level they need. I hope that this helps! ❤️

Wow!! I also didn’t finish all the light we cannot see!! And I felt sort of bad because I’m blind and there aren’t many books with a blind protagonist who isn’t a musical prodigy! So I felt I had to read it out of solidarity! And I did finish it eventually! After 3 tries! I didn’t hate it but it could have been shorter!
@thishouseofwalls26 күн бұрын
You are more patient than I am! I DNF a book if it's not holding my attention or interest.

I only did that with this book because of the blind protagonist. Had to show solidarity. But I wouldn’t normally do that!

Absolutely! I use it for my 2 kids. I have set it up by subjects and also just big blocks for each of my kids. I have a couple planning videos from this last school year and you can see how I set it up. I will also have a planning video for our new school year next month.

We loved using build your library! Emily is amazing and her curriculum is just enough for us without being too much work. We use math U see for math and khan academy. My kids do well with video lessons and practices. I didn’t like Life of Fred, definitely not secular. ❤
@thishouseofwallsАй бұрын
Yes! Build Your Library is fantastic! I have heard good things about both of those math programs. I agree that Life of Fred isn't secular but I think that there is only religion in the elementary levels.

We've used TGTB LA level K and Math level K and 1 for my daughter. I went through and marked everything out as we are also secular. She asked why for a while and now she just will be like "oh that just doesn't need to be a part of my schooling" and moves on. I had all intentions of dropping TGTB this year, have purchased and using different curriculum, but I've printed out the next levels for the upcoming year. They've worked in the past and I really think they are gentle and beautiful. For now I think we can look over the religious components but I do know that it gets worse the further along you get. I think the part that has bothered me most is the amount of religion that's in the math component especially when it's not related or needed.
