Being a VN war vet what saved my life was being assigned to an OH-13 helicopter rather than a Huey helicopter.

I'm an OR nurse and I wanted to go to the front a treat the wounded men. I told my recruiter that I can get a job anywhere I want in the states but that's not where I feel I was needed.

Definitely wasn't expecting the clip at 4:14. Like damn. I've seen a lot of war footage in my day, even some of the more grueling stuff from The Holocaust, but that clip just ruined my day, to be completely honest. It's not like it's explicitly gory or anything, it's just how pitifully the man becomes limp with death as the soldier who shoots him point-blank does not even flinch... I really wonder what the context behind that was.

The only thing that I can think about imagine being 18 years old, knowing that you’re gonna be drafted into the US Army, you’re in the helicopter and they’re gonna drop you down to where it’s going to be your destination and the only thing that you can think of is that if you’re gonna die, you’re gonna live and the rush that you’re gonna have what a fucking rush

There is no greater love/hate relationship than the one between a grunt and a chopper. I very well remember those times, sitting on the tarmac with our gear and rucks loaded with everything we could imagine we might need, waiting for those birds to take us out to God knows where to do God knows what. Smoking, with an occasional low conversation & feeble attempts at gallows humor as the knot in your stomach tightened. You just hated it when they came thump, thump, thumping in. Loud and blowing dust all around. Loading in and lifting off. Like moving in slow motion. Hitting the LZ was the opposite. Everything adrenaline packed..out as fast as you can go, hauling ass for cover, then watching that Huey lift off and leave you there. It was a very sinking feeling, not knowing if you just had your last ride. We were usually out for 2-3 weeks at a time, but when it was time to go back in there was nothing you loved more than seeing those birds coming for you. To this day, more than 50 years gone, the thump, thump of a chopper makes the hair on my arms stand up.

Not all troops were treated like "shit", because warriors came home with pride and they would not allow that pride to be taken from them. Americans took pride in them!!!! I damn sure know they took pride in them. Understand that there was what was referred to as the "Domino theory" and it definately made sense at the time. And, who knows that our involvement in Viet Nam did not prevent it from happening or not? One thing is for sure, it did not happen.
