That's what I do. I usually buy a old flagship and I get a great experience compared to Apple. Another thing is that it seems Samsung phone tend to have more base storage first on comparable years. It took years for Apple to finally give iPhone a base storage of 128GB with the iPhone 13 in 2021 compared to Samsung which give the Note 9 128GB in 2018.

And this is where the comparison in resale value fell short. The at launch price of the Samsung is inflated, which does make it look like it lost most of its resale value. Apple manage to keep its price more consistent and even last year models are not discounted much.

For me it’s the other way around. After a few months it’s very likely to get a new iPhone for 200 bucks less on Amazon! Last week I purchased an iPhone 13 Pro Max with 1 TB in graphite and new for 1.299 € after taxes. This is 530 € less than the original purchase price. The gold in 1 TB new was even only 1.199 €. So it’s a definite lie when someone says or writes „I never saw an iPhone on sale!“…you saw it, but lied or you didn’t want to see it! That’s a difference 😂🤷🏻‍♂️

The 2018 iPad Pro and M1 MacBook Air are the most modern major upgrade and so they're very similar to their new counterparts so often times people don't find it worth it to upgrade to the newest model so they look for the older models instead. That's why they have such good depreciation value.

Luke, something that most tech KZfaqrs don't mention (and I can understand why) is that for those of us who work in research (institutes, universities, etc.), most of the analysis software runs on x86 (Linux and Windows). For example, Quantum Espresso, ELK code, VAST, OriginLab, and many others don't even run on ARM (at least as far as I know). I think it could be a great idea to create a video for us!!!

The other way this value works is that I get to keep and effectively use my Apple gear for many years past the lifespan of an average PC or android device. As a result, I generally don't buy new for 6 to 8 years. It's important not to fall into the trap of the push to upgrade every year or two, though.
@thebuddercweeper
@thebuddercweeper 4 ай бұрын
As long as you buy outright, it doesn't actually matter that much whether you upgrade every 2-3 years or every 6-8, at least in the UK. Upgrading every year would almost certainly average to a greater loss, but after that the depreciation levels off to about £200 a year for iPhones on average about the same for Macs. Like Luke showed, more expensive Macs tend to depreciate faster, but the M1 MacBook Air has depreciated by only about £120 a year since it was released 3 years ago. Of course, upgrading more frequently does add the hassle of having to sell the old device, so if you're not trading it in (Apple do have some genuinely competitive trade-in prices currently) or if you don't already have a buyer lined up, it might not be worth it for you.

One thing I think can help explain the low price of 16 inch MacBook Pro with 64GB of RAM is that if you upgrade your new Mac's RAM or storage, it doesn't tend to really boost the resale value much compared to not upgrading it. I guess this might be because if people are looking on eBay for something they're looking for a bargain, pretty price sensitive, and are comparing the prices to the base model. Combine that with Apple's RAM and storage upgrades being a huge rip off in the first place and that can produce some pretty weird results like the one you flagged.
@peterparker2068
@peterparker2068 4 ай бұрын
It's the same concept with a lot of things that are customized. The more you customize something the narrower the set of buyers you filter out . Not everyone wants or needs 64GB of RAM. For most people it won't make a difference, people are only willing to pay for things they get value out of. That's why Apple can get away with having Macbooks with the base configuration of 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage and still have them sell well.

The one thing that I didn't see accounted here is that at least in the phone markets (barring special promotions from carriers which are offered for both), the iPhone never goes on sale from the msrp while android phones frequently go anywhere from 100-250 off in 4-6 months. So if the msrp goes down the resale price will also go down, if I bought that $1000 with a $200 savings then when I sell it I'll probably get $200 less cause of the new msrp.

@ilovedagreenday Yeah I personally think that group dynamics and this idiotic "green bubble blue bubble" thing in the US might be part of the reason. Something retains value if there's a collective believe in the value held by enough individuals. That's also the reason tulips had a stellar resell value at one point in time 😂 The only really valid and tangible point is the update support from apple which is far superior than anything android can offer (Xiaomi is among the worst offenders here) That being said, I personally can't really understand why I phones are so popular. As someone who uses both systems regularly I have to admit that IOS really kneecaps me because there's no clipboard manager by default (that's easily fixed tho) , multitasking feels like an afterthought, the text autocomplete is worse, there is no consistent back button at the bottom of the screen (or at least an equivalent gesture), and android feels much more intuitive in general. (accessing the app drawer is just a swipe up and it also gives me the search field and I can place my stuff where I want even in a 5*5 grid I'm preferring) Also sound controls suck on IOS since they aren't seperate sliders for alarms, media and calls and you have to go to the settings menu for that. Seriously Apple, WTF, the whole system feels like a fisher price construct made for toddlers from toddlers... I have the feeling that many of the IOS fanboys never tried a modern android revision. Oh and these points are just the easy and superficial ones, if I had to daily an IOS device I would miss so much more like sideloading APKs (NewPipe is a great one btw), alternative app stores like the fdroid store, terminal emulators, VNC servers, VNC viewers, ADB access to sideload own projects, emulators, custom roms, different themes and launchers. etc. pp. Yes there are also advantages of IOS, it uses hardware resources more efficiently, it looks prettier by default (the design language is more consistent) and the system runs a bit more reliable (meaning that microstutters and lags are very rare) But the gains aren't worth the tradeoffs to me.

The iPhone listings were sponsored listings. The Samsung listings were not sponsored. You chose an iPhone listing that was in "very good" condition, sponsored, and comes with a 1 year warranty. The Samsung phone listing was in "good" condition, not sponsored, and with no warranty stated. Sellers pay a premium for sponsored listings in hopes that users won't scroll or sort by the lowest price. I have no doubt that Apple products maintain their value but just because an item is listed for sale on eBay for a particular price does not make that the value of the product. A more accurate representation would have you searching for completed listings for both phones in similar conditions and with the same perks such as an extended warranty.

I will say that usability is becoming much less of an issue with android phones. Androids (just like iphones) have kinda reached their peak and now new phones aren't much different from old ones. (I mean what even is the difference between a Galaxy s21 and s23?) Plus both Samsung and Google are offering 5 or more years of OS updates which is pretty comparable to iphones. Androids now have basically the same amount of longevity as iphones do. It still remains to be seen if they will manage to retain their value tho.

Building brand loyalty takes time, and Apple has mastered it. Since their debut, they've solidified their image as a premium brand. Android, on the other hand, has faced identity challenges. Early on, inconsistencies in software updates, hardware quality across brands, and short support cycles hampered its reputation. Thankfully, things are changing! Lately, many Android makers are committing to longer software support, a welcome shift from the previous standard of just 2-3 years, especially for budget models. It's true that having dozens of Android models can be overwhelming. A bad experience with one phone (let's call it a lemon, not the whole orchard!) can unfairly color someone's view of the entire platform. This is where we, the tech-savvy individuals, come in! By sharing our knowledge and highlighting the diverse Android landscape, we can help others navigate the options and find the perfect phone for their needs.

Not to mention the Apple ecosystem has features that straight up just do not exist on Android/Windows PC. Copy and paste between devices? Not a thing on Android. Say I'm on Zoom and I want to use my phone as a camera, I just throw it onto the little holder and it automatically becomes the camera. Not a thing on Android. Maybe I get a Facetime or Phone call and I want to pick it up on my Mac? Again ... only the Apple Ecosystem does that. And not to mention Safari's superior syncing between devices in addition to Private Relay, iCloud Hide My Email, and other security advantages that Apple Devices have ... again, Apple is the winner. So many people think these features are "the walls of the walled garden getting higher" which I think is purposely misleading to make it sound bad. These are features ONLY Apple has. It's not a walled garden's walls getting higher, it's a walled garden that keeps adding beautiful flowers that are only available in the garden, because they require tight integration. I suspect there's a bigger market for used M1 Airs than M1 16-inch Pros, as for most users the Air is all they'll need, in a small, light package. It's a very attractive machine, whereas the 16-inch Pro, whilst lovely, is more niche. Most people just use Office, do emails, bit of light video. I paid 500UKP for my M1 Air nearly two years ago (Facebook marketplace) and could get pretty close to that now. If you have that little depreciation, your tech is almost free.

I agree. The market determines the prices of products. Since the Pros are niche products, seller end up having to reduce the cost in order to entice buyers. There's no way to charge more for something if people don't value it. Even if the Pro is a better machine if the buyers don't see the value of paying an increase price over an Air then the buyer might as well save money and buy the cheaper Air.

But I do have a 2012 ASUS rog laptop that I still using when I am doing windows stuff and it is still running fine surprisingly on windows 11.

I buy most of my Apple products used and resell on eBay a good bit. I have noticed the disparity between resale and list price on MacBooks is, especially considering how much better the M1 era has been vs Intel. I purchased a less than six month old 14” MBP with 512GB of storage and 32GB of RAM for $1700 which was an absolute steal compared to buying new. The M2 had not debuted yet. Now, I wonder if I could get more than $1100 for it if I resold. I am not planning to because I am very happy with it but, yeah, shocking.

its still very good value. to me there is virtually zero difference between a used M1 vs a new M3. nobody needs the difference in power, and no laptop for the same price compares in performance to a used M1. I use linux on a used 2 year old upgradable Thinkpad I bought for 400 bucks which is the most financially responsible choice for laptops if you do not need more performance, but the CPU obviously doesnt compare to the M1 and it doesnt have the nice look and nice screen of the mac. I would have the M1 if I could run linux properly on it, and then I would not care about apple not supporting it in the future, and would just use the device until it breaks down.

Absolutely couldn’t agree more with most the points on this video. It’s wild to think that my 2011 MacBook Pro that I bought for college still probably could be sold for 100 or so bucks (bought for 2,200 usd then) Maybe laptop perspective of MacBook value vs dell is not taking in the account that Apple laptops are still not as widely used as you may think? Unlike their phones which dominate all industries here in the U.S. Apple Mac OS usage as a whole I think is still only like 20% or so compared to almost 70% windows usage.

I usually use my smartphone for a longer period of time, 4-5 (or even 6) years before upgrading to a new one than most people out there. I recently upgraded from a 2018 Android phone (Samsung Galaxy Note 9) to an iPhone 15 Plus at the beginning of this year, and I paid a WHOPPING $1300 for my new iPhone (Warranty, MagSafe and Extra USB-C Wall Adapter Included in my purchase), not even the 15 Pro/Pro Max. And I still plan to use the iPhone for another 4-5 years before upgrading to another new expensive phone. My dad got a refurbished S20 Ultra to replace his Note 9 instead of the S23 Ultra, since he still wants an SD Card Slot in his phone, he got the S20 Ultra for $300-$400 from Amazon, and the S20 Ultra costed probably EVEN MORE than my iPhone 15 when it was new, and I expected the price of this iPhone 15 to significantly decrease in the coming 2-3 years, but only time will tell.

They also last longer and give you way more % back normally of original value, always good deposit on new ones. - Not sold a apple silicon one yet, but they are so good compared to intel machines but maybe why prices dropped there is a bit more available on the market from the pandemic days the prices may stabilise again when m3 or m4 come out.

In my opinion a big part of holding resale value is because of discounts, imagine the Galaxy S23 Ultra which is like 1300€ after a couple of months it was 1000€ already and around black Friday it went down to as low as 711€. How low are you willing to go to sell it? 600€ (ain't nobody buying a used phone for 800€ that was 711€ new a month before). Now, imagine selling that very same phone if it just went down to 1100€ max.

I've listed MacBook Pros on eBay that were in excellent condition and was unable to sell them at a fair market price. Just because it holds value doesn't mean you will get that value from that product. The other factor is money is getting really tight and will continue to do so. Having something of value want matter. That is why I buy used Apple products to begin with, I'm not buying new Apple anything when it first comes out unless I get a great deal from a third-party vendor.
@neilquinn

Main thing is to stick to base models if you want to lose the least. Or if you're buying used you can get a real deal on upgraded RAM/SSD/GPU/etc. Also helps if you buy on a good deal to start (15% off sales, refurb, etc). $1100 is a bargain for a 16" M1 Pro if you don't need the ram or storage. Excellent machines. Maybe I'll keep an eye out for a deal on a used 16" M3 max macbook this year/next year. Agree that used air machines or mac minis don't make sense. They are too cheap to start.

Yeah the base model advice was always wise, but today idk how I would even stand it given the joke base Mac specs of 8GB/256GB or whatever. I used to just upgrade the computer straight out of the box 😢 Now the Mac also really strongly forces users to store everything on the boot drive, and only advanced users can even figure out how to like, move their photo library or iMovie projects to an external. At least pro iPhone base specs aren’t as miserly as the Mac ones are.

I think the thing youtuber dont talk about is the value you get buying a new andriod phone offsets the amount when selling them. You get that $200 off the lunch price when buying so it does not matter . Like Samsung, when i bought my S22 ultra, i got a £50 pre-order voucher, 15% discount, memory upgrade worth£100, and plus a free Galaxy Bud Pro (worth about £200) which is as good as my Airpod Gen 2 . I've not mentioned £450 trade in for my Note 10 plus. The same year i got iPhone 13 pro Max, no discount. I bought airpod pro for £250. If i compare both phones, i got all my value upfront with the Samsung. It's much better than i will get if i sell my 13 pro max today. Every year i get a 15% voucher from Samsung i can spend on any product on top of any discount they have on the product. Never bought any product from apple at a discount. So the upfront purchase value offsets any resell value which is not always guaranteed.

Yeah, I think it's just software support and that Apple products are linked to the idea of 'premium quality'. Hell, my ipad pro 2018 is still getting support, while my Iphone 8 plus only recently got axed support. Until recently, Android phone makes were in fire and forget mode, encouraging people to constantly buy new phones, with the idea you might get 2-3 years support if that, so you better switch them out by then. The market is also saturated with all kinds of different Android phones as well, so if a particular phone doesn't take off, that price will come crashing down weeks or months later. Was happening to LG a lot in it's later years. Releasing flagship phones, they flopped, heavy price discounts followed. Meanwhile Apple is Apple, and they release a set of phones every year and don't clog the market. Apple also has a trade in system for you to upgrade, which is pretty useful.

I agree. I've had an iPhone X and MacBook Pro 2014 for sale. The iPhone X had a damaged screen and caused a bidding war. My MacBook received little interest. I eventually sold it for $160. I have confirmed it is still in use today.

For example the place where i stay right now - i can buy two galaxy s23 ultra and only one iphone 15 pro max for the same price, or buy Galaxy s23 ultra + Galaxy Tab s9 Plus, or Galaxy s23 128 gb + Galaxy Tab s9 Ultra 14 inch or buy only one iphone 15 Pro Max. Galaxy s23 with the same amount of storage will cost the same as half of iphone 15 pro 256 gb... so it... depends... The same for m3 macbooks. I can buy two windows laptops in alluminium nice looking body for the same price of single m3 pro macbooks with the same amount of ram and storage and GPU power. 4090 vs m3 max are more even, but if we take ssd + memory it will be 50%+ more expensive (better than 100% more price, but still). May be it is the US thing, but in most places i travel i see that Fruit products are a lot more expensive for the same power and build quality. Also i see that very old iphones below 12 are almost in the same sittuation with low second hand price, some people keep phones for 8-10+ years.

I would guess that the Android phone is more expensive because when you upgrade they tend to drop in price a lot. I have been an apple user since dipping my toes into the Apple eco system with the 2014 Mac and have upgraded my Macs with selling the old one and have paid far less out of pocket than PC hardware. I think Apple products hold their value due to the eco system. You know what to expect from an Apple product, you get things like Air Drop without having to mess around with networking settings or having to connect to a router to use it. Being able to control multiple Macs with just 1 without having to use 3rd part software also helps. Then the long battery life for the laptops over laptops when video editing is a huge must for a lot of people when not able to plug in.

Yep, that why you don't buy stuff new bleeding edge stuff unless you actually NEED it. You wait until that depreciation curve starts to slow, then buy it. That pixel 6 pro is a little not 1:1 because google discounts their phones immediately on top of other trade in + random google service discounts that make that depreciation while not quite the same as an iphone much much closer. That $900 pixel 6 pro was in reality much closer to $500 than $900. I also stopped buying anything but the mostly popular stuff because of this. Popular stuff holds value much much longer and the overall TCO usually ends up lower.

The lower resale value can be on our side as we can buy products second-hand for very cheap, so I am confused about this idea. And all other brands have many discounts, but only Apple doesn't offer that. Plus, almost every service or app is more or less 30 percent more expensive on an Apple device! Not to mention a lot of other services like buying an airplane ticket are by default more expensive from an Apple device, so after all it is a complete rip-off having an iPhone.
