This was so helpful! I was actually taking notes the whole time. I've had a bunch of character ideas that have gone to waste because I haven't been able to fully develop them, so hopefully this will help. One thing I always try to do is find songs that relate to/are about my character's backstory, personality, and/or how they're feeling (Like a song you could imagen being an animatic for them.) It's kind of similar to making a character playlist.

I think my favourite example of an abused character without depicting the abuse is nurse Bendy, they only show her reaction to said trauma and actually effects the plot

I've been creating character reference sheets for my webcomic i want to create. Yes, it'll be a huge project, but it'll be something I do because I'll have it as a hobby. Something that's bothering me while creating reference sheets is that whether i should create proportions for every important character (because I have a stylized artstyle and the body shapes differ drastically.) But having to constantly count and measure if the proportions of a character is correct is tiring me. I just don't know if i should keep on doing the proportions checks when it's just tiring me hueheh 🕳️🚶

I am not technically an artist, as I am a programmer, but I can relate to many points in this video. Especially #10. Setting alarms and limiting your work to certain hours is crucial for your motivation and productivity. I used to stay up very late at night on a certain project, only to lose motivation for it at maximum a couple days later. Sometimes even worse, I would lose the will to work entirely. Imagine wanting to draw but not wanting to at the same time for sometimes a couple months just because you used all of your will fuel in one go.

These are extremely helpful tips even though I haven't thought much about making any comics yet 😅 (I'm a beginner artist and want to at least learn the basics). Especially about pacing yourself by setting work hours! I'm learning to draw and have used a Pomodoro Timer App that sets a work time and a break time and it helps me stay more focused and productive. Sorry to hear about the rule change with KZfaq and I hope your channel can stay monetized! Have a good Pride Month as well 🏳️‍🌈

another tip is never write down your character's personalities, or never just decide them fully. only when necessary. why? when you write it down, it will make you feel heavily restricted to what you wrote. if you are an artist, try maybe doodling your characters doing something, anything. it could be interacting with a character, a simple little doodle of them doing something, anything. *in my opinion* , it gave me a better opportunity to flesh out my characters. this may not work for everyone, but it worked with me.

Late ass comment but I want to add some things as a crazy person working on an animated webseries for a couple of years now. These tips are also just as useful for comics! Number 1: MODEL SHEETS. Take every character that is going to be in your story, and make a very detailed model sheet. I start off with full body model sheet, with front facing view, back facing view, side, and 3/4 view, then I make a head model sheet with all of those angles including up and down angles. This allows you to save monumental amount of time and speed up your work flow considerably. I started my series animating it without model sheets and it took forever AND it looked inconsistent as hell. I recommend making your characters as simplified as possible for the model sheet, you can add more details later depending on the scene. (For example: close ups will have more hair strands visible and eye details etc etc) Number 2: Know your end, write the end of the ENTIRE series first. Know where all the characters are going to end up, who you are going to kill off, etc etc. I recommend using the 7 plot point structure: you start with writing the resolution, the hook, the midpoint, plot turn 1, plot turn 2, pinch 1, and then lastly pinch 2. There are multiple guides on what these plot points mean as well. Number 3: Stop watching videos on how to do things perfectly. Such as watching videos upon videos on how to write, animate, draw, instead of *actually* working on the thing. It can be helpful during down time to learn how to make your project better, but doing this excessively is only going to make you frustrated that it isn't perfect. Just write/draw it, and as long as *you* like it, then chances are other people will too. Ok that's it buh bye :3

My biggest problem when creating stories: I never, never, NEVER know what to do for the ending- I got ideas and plots and characters are my specialty, but I don’t know how to end story’s Such as my biggest story, which I’ve been working on since I was like 10, has like 15 different arcs that connect to one another, so it never… truly ends- I don’t know how to end things, I don’t want the story to end lmao

I really finally wanna start drawing my comic... but I am stuck Planning and scripting for like one and a half year. But this was the best decision I could make, seriously. I made the mistake in the past, that I started drawing the first chapter while the first draft of the story, and it ended in a catastrophe. And now, even though I am a bit handicapped with drawing, I can focus this time outside of writing of planning out other stuff I would be too lazy to do elsewise. Like making a lot of important decisions for stilistic choices, for time schedules, work processes and I can spend enough time with each charakter design and make them proper charakter sheets. And most importantly, I can actually try to write a good story that is worth putting out there!

one of my ocs for a pre-existing fandom that happens to be my most traumatized ocs, though most of it ties into the source material. she's of a species that was almost wiped out, and my explanation for her survival is that her adaptation ability has made her unrecognizable. the people responsible for almost wiping them out however have been almost wiped out as well, and the remaining ones of that species where not involved. Despite this others of her kind have still been vengeful, so her idea is one that chose to stay kind instead of becoming bitter and vengeful like everyone else, at the end of the day she just wants to live her life. (fun fact this is lore from a comedy anime, gold star for those who recognize it despite how vague I made it.)

Man I wish this was around when I first started my comic making journey. This advice was sorely needed. I was definitely a “pantser” in my early years, and didn’t follow a story chart. I just winged it, and would start projects left right and centre, burning me out as I tried to multitask. This was the harsh way of learning that I should not start a new project while the current one is in progress. Now I’m more focused on one project at a time as I try to whittle down my pile of unfinished comics, now with actual outlines roughly plotted. And any other ideas that come up I just write it in my notebook so that I can get it out of my head and come back to it later if I have the energy.

Im currently making a comic, and my inner child is SO GOD DAMN EXCITED that he refuses to let me stop until i PHYSICALLY cant work on it anymore for a while. I love drawing my characters, i love doodling them in silly poses, doin goofy shit, i love making two of them in particular being all lovey dovey, and my inner child couldnt be happier. Just that my health sucks ass so i cant work on it often and it makes me and my inner child sad because my health likes kicking me in my ribs! Is this comic gonna be long as all hell, with the average chapter length being 20 pages with 4-6 panels each with custom borders done all traditionally using colored cardstock as speach bubbles? Yes. Is it making me happy as all hell, also yes. I have yet to experience burnout and im on chapter 3 of this bahemoth after YEARS of planning, and I WILL KICK BURNOUTS ASS IF IT TRIES TO TOUCH ME DURRING THIS!!!!
