Mixed flock of goats & sheep which do a great job on the pasture part of our ~5ac. But does all that clear-mowing help our fire insurance prospects in northern CA? Nope. On the ‘interface’ zone, it doesn’t matter what you do unless your whole ‘neighborhood’ does a hardscape only surround and remove all trees (we have redwoods!). This is the blindness of the insurance companies.

I think the greenhouse translucent panel has some really interesting applications. I'm sure its price restrictive but if you could pair it with a battery to power a small pump, fan, and heater and it could water your plans for you and precisely control the temperature, humidity in the greenhouse year for year round production. Would love to see something like that for our backyard.

Theoretically, a QD layer could be applied to an existing panel to 'corral' the light into bands which favour the existing PV capture chemistry. Effectively translating solar bandwidth to improve existing technology. Though something tells me, if this were easy, we'd be seeing them by now.

One interesting application I can think about is using QDots to reflect near infrared and UV light off of buildings and windows, thus helping them to stay cooler and reducing the load of an AC and increasing a smidge that albido effect.

With the first part about Heatpumps vs district heating. I dont think it is Vs. One of the expensive parts of district hearing is each unit has its own controller so everyone can adjust their own heat. In cold climates, just getting over 40°F at all times is requirement to protect your water system. And a heat pump keeping your house at 67° from an original 40° inside temp is way more efficienct then going from 20° inside temp. Let alone trying to keep out -8°F outside temp. So using district hearing as a base load heat would allow a larger variety of heat pumps that are cheaper to be available and may remove the need for hight rise and larger buildings to need any gas lines at all. Making the entire building cheaper and safer overall.

This is more for Matt's battery video coming up but: What I want to see is a center lot in a residential neighborhood turned into a dedicated energy storage center. Something that can turn the a few blocks of residential into a bit of a micro grid. That way the whole neighborhood can get solar and focus in electric for heat and cooking and provide emergency power as an option. I'm thinking like having 2 power panels in people's homes here. A normal 100amp service and then a optional 20/40amp emergency service that people can pay for for direct access to the battery system at all times. Think people with special medical needs kind of thing. The battery center's main goal would be a local place to be a energy buffer to overall lower the cost of electricity for the entire neighborhood. Reducing strain on the main grid acting like an expansion tank. And if it acts as a distributer for electricity then it can become its own net metering system for the local grid even if the state doesn't have one.

First off, i enjoy this channel and TBD. I've heard that some of my comments may come across overly snarky, and that's not really my intent. Anyhow, in reference to the $0.28/w vs quantumdots (or any other up and coming more expensive but higher efficiency tech), i see one area where higher efficiency with higher net cost (per watt) will still have decent uptake: places, like NYC, where available surface area is at a premium, and energy costs are already high/high-ish. But, as always with tech, as you always say, it's the right tool for the right job. And its not always the high tech that is needer. For example, i live in a double wide (~1550 ft^2) in Central Texas. We have resistive heating and regular A/C. Switching to a heat pump could likely save me ~$600 a year. But, spending about half as much on "simply" insulating my home (Adding 2"insulated zip system to all exterior walls and floors) would save about the same, and make my future (hopefully) solar and battery requirements much lower. But, swapping HVAC is MUCH easier, lol. Horses for courses, but its not always an easy choice!

When the first commercially available digital cameras came out, a lot of the wise experts said they would never replace good film cameras ... about 5 years after digital cameras started to sell, nearly all cameras sold were digital ... not to mention that nowday's most people just use their phones for photos.... if a product works, and has an advantage over previous product, it will quickly replace it...

Solid State is out of the lab but needs to get to version 3 of being produced to become mass market. The breakthroughs are happening but just not as fast as we want. A key leading indicator is when Tesla starts to talk about them then they are becoming highly available.

I believe you got grifted. How do we know that Yoshino product is solid state besides it calling itself solid state? And taking a step back, what's the purpose of solid state, right? It replaces the anodic graphite scaffold with lithium metal, accomplishing two goals: higher nominal voltage and less volume designated for energy storage. Said another way: more energy, smaller, and lighter. Compare Yoshino to another battery pack maker on the market - Jackery. They both have a product the stores ≈ 600 Wh: the Yoshino B660 and the Jackery Explorer 600 Plus. In fact, the Jackery is rated for higher energy and higher power. If you compare the tech specs, it is lighter and smaller than the Yoshino. It claims is LFP, and claims 4000 cycles; same as Yoshino. Put that together and it beats the "solid state" Yoshino in all areas solid state is supposed to excel in. It's also $200 cheaper MSRP.

Home wind turbines typically are mounted on their own towers, not the roof. Maintenance is required, and can be dangerous. With today's solar PV prices, it makes more sense to install enough PV panels and batteries to do the job.

Thanks for the additional info on pricing for the window HVAC units. One example of an economic sector potentially abusing government funding is the durable medical equipment industry catering to seniors with Medicare or Medicaid. There are hundreds of items covered, including hospital beds, blood sugar monitors and test strips, wheelchairs and scooters, walkers and canes, etc. Pricing on these items is fairly high, and the availability of federal government support for these items may tend to inflate prices, which the federal government is attempting to moderate through enhanced competitive bidding and other practices. The pharmaceutical industry is vulnerable to similar criticisms, as is military contract pricing due to minimal competition. There are other examples of the same phenomenon. But in a newly developing market like high-end 110v window heat pumps, I’m less skeptical this is price gouging. I guess we’ll see as the market expands and other brands enter the market.

If they can get to sub-1k, I'd be on board for having both AC + Heat. The new u-shaped systems run between 300-400, so if you double that to 800-1000, I'd be on board. 3K is ridiculous. I got quoted 13k for 3 mini-splits just recently.

17:50 Perfect example: Ford and their EV's! The F-150 "Lightning" is built from the same chassis as the F-150 ICE version, yet many are aghast at its higher cost because as you said, everyone is used to the basic truck, no consideration of what the EV can do the ICE cant (like power all tools at a job site). Even if selling for more, Ford says they are loosing $$$ on them, shows how new products are really hard get traction into a market. On the AC unit, I had briefly mentioned earlier, but dealing with condensation water collection and removal can be a major challenge. Those engineering challenges alone will drive up costs as testing finds flaws that result in redesign and more testing. We had encountered unexpected issues and had resulting scramble for solutions (which were less than ideal).

the robot vacuum i just purchased for less than $600 was over $1,000 a year ago. There are plenty of cheaper guide by wire mowers out there now under $1,000 even, and from my experience owning one it worked just fine for the most part. i just didn't get to operate it from my phone so i had to check on it when it got stuck and fix the boundary wire when it got broken.

The "sad" part is that we liblve near some 50, 100, 200 acre ranches that have 3-5 acre yards and mow them (they LOvE the zero turn radius mowers here) All the cattle around take pretty good care of rhe rest of the areas (or they're mowed for hay)

How much does a quality mini-split of comparable capacity cost? $1500? And that includes baked in profits. I dont buy that shrinking the connections, making a single unit, and making it fold doubles the cost. Even if it were $2,000, i can see it, but not the $3000 or $3400 currentky (and ,per the vid, theae are price estimates, not firm numbers)

with time prices come down, but if life has taught me anything, it's that products don't necessarily get better. have a window AC unit I bought over 30 years ago, and it still works great. I've moved it to multiple homes, it's been stored in various positions, and it's never been recharged. Show me one of those window heatpumps that I'll be able to say that about in 30 years... though I'll be in my 80s, youtube will have gone away decades sooner, and fusion will still only be 10 years away!
