Bowie are adequate but when it comes to large blades you can't beat billhooks and khukuri and parang for bushcraft since that's what they were/are used and designed for. Now historically in the USA (and Mexico) Bowie were fighting knives, people used their jackknife for fine carving, dedicated wide flat and thin knives (we still have several patterns of those from Green River sold today) for butchery and skinning, and various axes for wood processing. That's fact. One tool options are frankly overrated and not really a historical thing, even people using Parang, Koita, Koduval, Khukuri etc historically also carried a smaller knife to complement a large chopper.

Red Wolf: I immediately decided to subscribe when I saw your video about Historical living, or Historical trekking. Although I am 83, I did not get into living history & historical re-enactments until about 25 years ago. I have participated in French & Indian War; Revolutionary War; War of 1812; & Civil War re-enactments. You implied something very SIGNIFICANT which most modern bushcraft gurus fail to mention. So-called survival skills in today's world were everyday skills, knowledge & daily chores in the 18th century. Back then even school age kids knew what we call modern survival skills because they were necessary for families to survive on the early Amrican frontier. It is far past my bedtime, but I wanted to comment & subscrible while this is on my mind. I look forward to watching all your videos & hope that we can share our respective experiences in making /reproducing our own hiastorical gear. Your manner of speaking suggested that you might also be from one of the Southern States. I now live in NE Alabama. I thank you, and may God bless you! The Old Preacher

Many years ago a close friend in the mountains of SE Kentucky found an old Bowie knife in his tool shed & gave it to me. The stag handle was loose & the blade had lots of surface rust. I cleaned it up; tightened the handle; sharpened it; & eventually got a new leather sheath for it. After clean-up, it was a real beauty; the blade is high carbon steel made in Sollingen, Germany. When my friend gave the knife to me, it looked like it was not worth much; but now a knife of that quality would bring hundreds of dollars at most any knife swap or knife show. Thanks for your video. If I can get around to it, I might send a picture of it. By the way, I am 83 & still look forward to every opportunity available to be in the woods. God bless you. The Old pPeacher

Still for $6 it's not very bad for what it does, stainless steel, a flimsy sheath, it's cheap material for a cheap machete.
@donjuanmckenzie4897Ай бұрын
Which is exactly what you want in a machete, right? These things are gonna hit rocks and dirt. You're gonna sharpen them constantly. Definitely don't want a high ticket item for dirty work.

I have in the past, and was not particularly impressed by the edge retention , and I remember the grip rolling in my hand. I will look around locally, and if it is not to much, sure. You want a particular comparison, or just a review?

I've had my eye on the 22-inch fiskars machete because I generally dig Fiskars products. If you would be so kind, I would love a review. The Ontario and/or Tramontina would be good points of comparison. @Redwolfblog

@@Redwolfblog there's a machete at Walmart that sells for $5, the reviews I've seen about it have been absolutely amazing. Maybe you can see if it can compete with the tramontina since they both have a similar shape and size, being at 18 inches.

Yes, but it is the old style with the hollow grind. Checking the new version out is on my short list. It carries very well, holds a great edge, cuts above it's weight class, and was not very expensive.

Rtak 2 is better than junglas as long as you have the 5160 version. Otherwise dont waste money. Just comes with a LOUSY sheath. I got an od green taco kydex sheath for it with a dangler. Keep the other sheath for a backup sheath. This, the bk9 and the junglas 2 i love. Junglas 2 doesnt chop as well or have a choil but is a nice medium size. Bk9 and this are a must have. To me bk 9 chops a tad better and batons considerably better. Rtak 2 looks cooler and that extra blade length is good for defense against critters
