This was definitely a miss for Disney. When I first saw it in theaters, I didn’t think it was awful because it felt relatable to myself. I personally think the reason why it flopped was I felt sorry for King What’s-his-face. Despite his villainy, I still feel he was just misunderstood and deserved some forgiveness. What they should’ve added is after they defeated him, they show him the error of his ways and sentence him to the dungeon not for life, but until he understands the mistakes he made. They say he’ll hopefully understand in time what Asha and his kingdom really wanted and deserved. This movie definitely deserves another shot, it CAN be fixed. They should perhaps give it a mini-sequel on Disney+ where the king is redeemed.

That movie was underrated and deserves more praise. I feel it’s WAY better than Turning Red. It deserves a TV series on Peacock or Netflix.

It's definitely underrated, but it's absolutely not better than Turning Red. Turning Red is deep and profound, and Ruby Gillman, I felt, didn't really know exactly what it was trying to say. I particularly felt the way they handled the villain was... not great. The message seemed to be that you shouldn't trust people who are different.

I never saw the whole thing, I just skipped through it on Netflix instead. And I didn’t like what I saw. I feel it’s overrated. And I also don’t recommend it for kids or families. I feel it should’ve been rated PG-13 for teens only. And also the release date for part 2 is still uncertain. So everyone should forget about it for a while so they won’t stress over it. However, I also feel the first one, INTO the Spiderverse is way better so everyone should stick with that instead.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion and it's perfectly okay not to like it. At the same time, I do question why you feel informed enough to opine on this movie when you admit you haven't actually seen all of it. Out of curiosity, why do you not recommend it for kids or families? Do you feel it's too dark or violent?

I’m conflicted about this film. It’s either stupid or just different. It was geared too much towards girls, which I’m not. However, I still feel it deserves a sequel, there’s room for improvement. I feel it should be more appealable to boys.

I think stories that get at universal truths about humanity should be relatable to anyone. I found this film to be extremely relatable to me, and I'm certainly not a Chinese-Canadian girl. Personally, I love a great story, no matter who it's about.

Hot take. I liked the original voices. It made it feel almost like a balance between earlier cartoons that were silent and more modern cartoons with full voices. The grunts feel more cartoon-y to me.

I was recommended this and it's fascinating! I had no idea that the games were based on things in Disney's history. Unfortunately I haven't seen much of their newer movies and stuff so I don't have opinions on them, but I want too. I never played the second game but I did play a bit of the first. I ultimately got rid of it because I didn't like the motion controls. Also as someone else in the comments pointed out yeah Twisted Wonderland does kinda take inspiration from classic Disney and Epic Mickey.

Being brutally honest, if I saw a platformer in the 2000s or most of the 2010s focusing on “Two player co-op,” I was always expecting a watered down piece of crap that put emphasis on making sure everyone can get through it without ever having to be engaged. Of course, this is made even worse if they include a single player option where you have to tediously get every character into place to pull switches or open doors.

If they make an Epic Mickey 3, there's a load of forgotten characters they could use, such as characters from the cancelled film Gigantic, the Wish concept art characters, deleted characters from Zootopia, Elsa's original design etc.

I love the Art of Epic Mickey book. It is one of my favourite books to skim through as it is not your typical Disney fare. It's pretty dark and bleak with some really scary designs as well as some absolutely beautiful Disney art of their main characters. I picked up my copy from ACME ( Australian Center of Moving Image) and I just can't recommend it enough for any inspiring creative😊

i remember learning about epic mickey online, getting the game informer and studying every picture and concept art, and obsessing over the game i thought it would be in my head. when it came out, i was honestly disappointed that it wasn’t the “dark gritty” world that the initial concept art promised, and my interest dropped ever since. however, seeing this video (and growing into an adult with a much different perspective) has really made me rethink my opinion on it and want to revisit it. i’m super excited for the remastered edition!!! thanks for this!!!

I'm really happy that I decided to watch this video. I was very wary at first, because I've seen many talking points and think pieces with the same regurgitated thoughts towards this game for years. As soon as I saw you with all your Epic Mickey merch mentioning that it was your favorite game, I definitely perked up and got excited to hear what you had to say! A lot of criticism that comes to this game, from my own experience, has been from people who haven't really played it or ever cared to play it. They don't realize that the people who love this game are already very aquatinted with its flaws and know where it falls short. This game came out right before I was set to go to college, and I went to college for Digital Art and Animation. There was an emphasis on more video game related media, but we did learn a lot of foundational animation skills like hand-drawn flip animation. I was very obsessed with animation and also very obsessed with Oswald, and I remember seeing all those interviews where they talked about replicating old cartoon animation in a 3D space! I loved the idea of a forgotten world with forgotten characters, a lot of it lines up so perfectly with a Kingdom Hearts storyline (another series I was heavily obsessed with as a child) My desire to play this game definitely stemmed from seeing Oswald brought back (I hoped to see more of him afterwards too!) The problem with going to a school focused on video games and animation is that there are a lot of... big criticisms within our own art towards each other but also towards media in those industries. It's kind of like those jokes about meeting someone who took one psychology class and has a lot to say. I remember expressing that I enjoyed Epic Mickey, or I would implore if anyone else had played Epic Mickey, because I thought at the very least that the progress videos of them replicating 2D animation in a 3D space would be REALLY cool for my peers to see. Almost every person I tried to talk to would not stop bringing up the fact that "the game just doesn't live up to the concept art so it sucks" it was infuriating, because it was so dismissive, and eventually it just felt like that was being parroted to me over and over with no context. Also, as a school with an emphasis on art in video games, I would think it's obvious that concept art does not equate final product. Epic Mickey isn't alone in this! I understood the frustration with choices not being as important as you thought, or the paint and thinning abilities not being as flexible and open as people would have liked. That's valid! I would also ask people who brought up those criticisms (especially since I was in a video game obsessed school) what their solutions would be to fix those things in a realistic way, but since they didn't actually play it there wasn't much to actually discuss. I really loved the amount of history you added into this video with the old school animations, the developers, Disney as a company and the games themselves. It's a breath of fresh air for me, honestly. I really enjoy the criticisms too! Even though I had seen most of these interviews, I had never seen the one where Warren Spencer talks about Epic Mickey meaning the most to him because of the fanmail and the amount of people that let him know how important the game was to them. That honestly hit me hard because I hadn't realized how much of a bubble I had felt stuck in over this game. I genuinely thought so many more people hated this game, and there is something so wonderful finding out that it is really well loved. I'm happy that more people will be able to experience it with the remaster! This video was excellent and I really appreciate the work you put into making it.

Thank you for watching, and thank you for the kind words. One of my goals when I make a video like this is to bring something new to the conversation. If a topic has been thoroughly covered, I won't usually talk about it. In the case of this game, there's probably thousands of videos about it, but there's so much to the game and its story that it seems people just never talk about. Honestly, I really agree with you about most of the coverage of this game and its history being pretty shallow and consisting of the same regurgitated talking points. I really felt that way, and it's one reason I wanted to make this video. There's a line from Ratatouille that I really love that goes, "...in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so." I thought about that line a lot while making this video because it really seemed like a lot of the conversation about this game was around its failure and perceived wasted potential, and not about what the game did right or how many people love it, not to mention its place in Disney history in general. Anyway, all that to say, I was very happy to read your comment because a lot of the things you said you enjoyed about the video were things I was specifically trying to do, and so that makes me feel like I succeeded at least a little bit, so thank you for that.

I genuinely think a musical video game is such a genius idea and so on par for Disney. It wouldn’t have worked for the first game so I’m glad they didn’t do it but the combination of having only the Mad Doctor singing and making all the other characters aware and confused by it adds a level of and comedy and a level of charm bc the songs r elite
@ExtraordinaryPeoples
@ExtraordinaryPeoples 25 күн бұрын
I agree that the idea of a musical video game is great, but I disagree that having only the Mad Doctor singing works. Having the other characters aware of and confused by the fact that the Mad Doctor is singing feels like the game is making fun of musicals, not honoring the genre. It makes it feel like the game is ashamed of the fact that it's a musical and is making fun of itself instead of having the conviction to actually go all the way and be what it's trying to be. I also disagree that the songs are elite. I think they're extremely mediocre at best. It is nice to hear a differing perspective, though, and I'm glad that you were able to enjoy it even though I wasn't.

I completely understand the disappointment that the thinner/paint choices didn’t affect the story all that much, but as someone who gets way too emotionally invested in not hurting a fictional character’s feelings, it definitely makes me feel better knowing me accidentally making a “mean” choice won’t stop me from getting the good ending 😂
