Didn't know that this amp was considered a "cheater amplifier". Of course just my opinion.

I had the Kenwood KAC-821 and KAC-823 and KAC-923. All 2 channel Amplifiers. They sound loud and clear. I like the fact that they had built-in cooling fans. I had a MTX 3 way hatchback speaker box, and a Collins dual voice coil Bass Tube, hooked up to the KAC-923, and never had a problem with it.

It is really sick that it has a current meter, even Alpine with the best they could muster, the MRD-M1000, M1001, M1005 etc, none of them would read current, even with their AI net, amp address, fan and temp monitoring etc fanciness, the only feature I wanted, the only *useful* feature, current, they never had. My brother has a KAC-9105D, it isn't an eXelon, but it's rated 500w @4 and 900w @2. No doubt it makes good power, but I definitely think it rolls off early in the low end. It has a subsonic filter, switch selectable, but even with it off, but seems to be rolling off as you go under 35hz. It pushed a Type R 12 really well, plenty of power, and super reliable and a decent price too, but I just feel the bottom end was lacking. I haven't confirmed it with a scope though. I really like Kenwood, it's always been my top choice above Sony, Pioneer, Clarion and JVC etc. Especially their headunits. It is absolutely crazy what you get for $200. The DMX-9720 is a far superior headunit than anything even Alpine can offer in 2024!

I have that same amplifier your borther has. I am was pushing 2 American bass xd's 500 watts each and it does not break a sweat. I also thought it was rolling off on bottome end. However I switched over to two jbl stadiums and set the sub range on a taramps dsp to start response at 25hz and adjusting the subsonic filter on amplifier it was moving those two at 28hz. So its not the amp, its the subs response range.

I had kenwood ps 300 was a beast and the 926 and 1016 was really powerful and good strong clean power.

The protection circuit in the XTR class is absolutely amazing I can testify to this I took my amplifiers out reinstalled them did not pay attention that I reverse polarity on the positive and negative no blown diodes or circuitry,,, The he said she said on the HCCA they don't fare as well

I still have the Cobalt Orion 6400 watts /3200.1D I bought in 2015. I have it 2x maxp154D @ 4 ohms. I'm working on adding 2x maxp124D & 3 maxp84D. All being packed in a 2000 Accord sedan.... I'm ole' school so I've GOT to get a better head unit.... The Pioneer double din CD player is holding me back from a lot of features that would take my SQ to another level... I just haven't done much research on what's out there nowadays.... My pioneer has the USB port for a flashdrive and using the stock aux (headphone) port is crappy for linking my phone.... You lose so much volume.

@@christopherparis6841 as cheap as they are nowadays rated power isn't expected... Its advertising is misleading to those that are new to the audio scene. That's the crappy thing about it all. But someone like myself, I don't have $500-600 laying around to put in something that's not going to feed me or f*ck me everyday lol. When I was younger that was a different story. But I know what you mean.... I'm happy with my cheap equipment; it'll hold its ground when it needs to. 😁

I thought for sure I checked this amp about 4-5 years ago and got 1k rmsx2 I was dropping voltage from 15.5 down to 12.5 volts not near enough amperage on my home made power supply I only had 200 amp power supply and a big agm no lithium at that time .

Orion amps were amazing back in the day. I used to have an old orion rated at 75x2 that did 400 watts bridged.

Not much has changed. They're cheap ztreet and cobalt series are weak but also pretty cheap. However their XTR line is still awesome and Hcca is way underrated. There's an old Hcca 250 for sale local to me for 175$, I don't need it but I want it lol

What if you connect to the Bluetooth audio then try the mirroring feature will the audio play through the radio then?

I actually had this exact amp. Mostly cause I was in high school and couldn’t afford the power class. Not sure if I would classify it as a cheater amp like Orion etc. It was a solid amp and never had a problem. Always wondered if it made rated power compared to the pc class. Never regreted buying it over audiobahn crap.

It's kinda sad how they overrate. Their stuff is sufficient at what it really does. Just sell it as it is, I say. It's budget audio.

Funny you just posted this a few days ago. I just ran across one of these brand new on Craigslist today! They want $200 USD with a brand new vintage JVC Arsenal CD head unit as well. I love the old MTX amps as well. Always under rated and rock solid.

The fuse rating multiplied by 10 only works on class d amps class A b like this are more like 50% efficient so it's like fuse rating times 7 or so assuming this is a class ab

Those amps sold here in the USA in the mid 2000's. Can't speak for down under though. I'm a sucker for old school car audio amps. Especially when they were made in the USA. PPI, Orion, Rockford, Phoenix Gold, and Soundstream were a few of the top contenders back in the day. All made in the USA. 🇺🇸

Dumb math for a Class D amp is 10x the fuse rating. Dumb math for a Class A/B amp is 8x the fuse rating. The difference is due to the different efficiency. 👍

My first MTX product was the 81000D and I loved that thing so much, it just destroyed my previous <1KW amps like Alpine MRD-M1000\1001 It was brutal. I took a chance on the Thunder 6000 6.6 convertible coax/splits, when I got those home I immediately ran the tweeter quietly full range and was almost speechless, they sounded truly amazing, literally the best I had ever heard at that point and I rocked those for ages. If there is 1 thing I hate in audio, or 1 thing that is just so crazy stupid of a thing to do, that is buy speakers you have never heard before in person. I loved those 6000's so much (and in so many different ways) that even though I had no way to audition them in any way, I decided to spend the most ever at that point in time on speakers, and I paid $1000 AUD (from memory) for the flagship Thunder Axe TXC 6.1. (2006?) They are rated at 150w rms, the crossovers are the size of an unfolded pizza box (lol, but they are HUGE), and made of metal (cast alloy?) it oozes quality and has incandescent tweeter protection so the entire car lit up like a live stadium when they were screaming loud. And they were loud alright, running bridged off a Rockford Elite T8004. You can see, I'm a big MTX fan! I often thought over the years that I wish MTX made high end products like those TXC6.1 again. I would introduce my brother to MTX gear, although it sucks we have no local distributer to audition and buy from, only online. *WAIT* HOLD UP! I just found the new MTX 3 ways! *MTX Audio ImagePro 3-Way Speaker System - IP863* $999AUD! Oh!... I desperately want to find a detailed review of these, somewhere like CARMUS or Car&HiFi 🤤 I'd like to hear those MTX TX8 as well, I bet they are super amazing speakers, and crazy performance for the price.

Clarion made good amps, performance per dollar they were one of my favorite A/B amps in the 90's, my only complaint with them is they tended to run hot so you had to make sure they had adequate external cooling.........

For the fusing, dumb math for a Class D amp is to multiply the fuse rating by 10. This being a class AB amp, the dumb math would be to multiply the fuse rating by 8 to reflect it's lower efficiency. 👍
