Thanks for all you do to support the racers and to inform us of who they are. I went last year to the Million to Win and I came away feeling they sold me the sizzle not the steak. I doubt I ever go back but don't mind watching the highlights after the fact. Just the bang for the buck isn't there for me and the racers weren't all that friendly when you saw them in the pits. I better not include Rico in that group because he seemed to honestly care about the fans.

Once again Don, we really get to better know some very interesting drivers. McKenna certainly is a well spoken lady. She represents herself, her sponsors, and the sport in fine fashion. I'm glad you got a chance to talk to Daison. I'm not sure I've ever seen an interview with him before now. Two years ago at the Eldora 4-Crown, I sat next to Daison's mother up in Turn 3. At the time, he was racing a midget. Gio.....what can you say. Another motivated young driver. Son of famous drag racer Gary Scelzi. And brother of sprint car racer Dominic. And I liked getting to know Devon Borden. That American flag sure stands out on his car rear bumper! Finally, so glad Bill Balog made it through his crash in ok shape. His was a bad crash for sure. Thanks for helping us learn about the drivers who make the sport what it is.

ugg I was even looking for you and didn't find you don, thought maybe you cam to the weekend shows, but you were at the jackpot. it was a really nice day though not real hot or muggy, not too windy, better then the million which dried the track out soo fast last year and the track held up better in fact while walking out and around the track the cushion at the top still had water in it and compressed when kicked or stepped in, wonder why tyler courtney had to change a tire early on, and wonder why kyle larson lost power or pulled off, congrads to david gravel though hes fast many times holds several track records finnaly won it, got everyone but kyle I think autograph wise the crew would not let me ask for autograph when he was getting ready and here after I put my book in my car at the introductions I stood next to larson for five minutes even talked a little asking him how many laps the a main was going to be stupid me, turns out though I asked brad sweet why they killed the allstar name being the oldest and he said they just bought the assets and had they not it was likely stewart was going to pull the plug on the allstar circut of champions, and that is straight from the horses mouth, though I hope high limit brings it back one day, honored though that local to my area zeb wise from northern indiana was final champion and got to see the last few laps duel at the 4 crowns last year its one of those right place right time being there things, just like my video of a anime dub english voice actor I got in 2012 with his girlfriend dressed as his famed character and he went under the table and did a line from the dragonball z character he did while she lip synched the line, just happened to be there and it was only one of a few times he did it as the costume was hard for her to keep on all day so it was not done often, now he is gone from lung cancer 2 years ago and the video went viral for a time even though its not a good video and it was on a 5 megapixle camera and hard to hear its what I had to record with. I also got it filmed better this year the a main that is but being at the richest paying dirt race all time was one of those things even though the track was rough and dry and accedents a plenty, cant belive you asked about politics though, but I did too wanting to make sure kyle larson wasn't some woke dude from cali, while talking at kokomo with his wife it dont seem he is too buissy racing, and logan sevey too, hes no woke dude just a guy that want to race, and cali while has nice weather and its actually quite conservative in the north half he agreeed is a real can of worms politically, and the racing scene is not the same as used to be. though I thought miss haase was from indiana, origionally but I guess not she is pretty and kind though, and I can say for sure the one to really talk to and is a force of nature is tannor and carly holmes, he is such a presance and has that voice and larger then life presance, carly is a little quieter but she is learning car set up quite well
@HistoryMysteryMan
@HistoryMysteryMan 21 сағат бұрын
Thanks, sir. Personally, I don't think I really asked about politics. I asked if they were hopeful for America's future or concerned. Valid question. Although I do believe it's perfectly acceptable to ask about politics...don't know why it's such a big deal. Fortunately, race fans, by in large, are a very patriotic crowd, which is super cool. I think I put over 10 miles on my feet that day at Eldora; it was a long ride home. Thanks again...HMM

I respectfully disagree that the Fitz bottomed out on the shoal, they investigated the shoal after the sinking because it would be an easy answer. The Bradley didn't need to strike bottom to break in half and neither did the Morel so why did the Fitz? I posit a simpler more straight forward theory that places zero blame on the captain or the crew before I say it, I am going to say that I am not a mariner, nor do I have maritime experience, the only thing I am remotely related to this is a welder in the mining industry who has seen and worked on a lot of old equipment and steel. There is this phenomenon that happens with old equipment where you repair it over and over again. Gouge out the cracks, fill the cracks with weld metal, normalize let the equipment do another 12 -14,000 hours of service. It comes back cracked again you fix it again, repeat it a few times. Then when you are doing a repair, when you are gouging out the cracks that other cracks appear 2-3 inches from the one you are fixing. The more you gouge the more cracks appear, and you can't fix them all because all of the metal is stressed, the steel has hit the point where it cannot be repaired because it is effectively crystalized and shattered. The Fitz as was said lived a hardlife, it never left without a full load, it was always out in weather. It didn't need to hit the bottom, it didn't need rogue waves aka the 3 sisters to sink it. All it would take is heavy weather, a heavy load and the ship wouldn't survive. I don't think there is a need for any theory on this sort of thing, the ship went out in a storm it shouldn't have gone out in the ship ended up on the bottom in 2 pieces and we are missing about 100 feet of the wreck in the middle it just disintegrated.
@HistoryMysteryMan
@HistoryMysteryMan 21 сағат бұрын
Understood. Certainly, the Fitz "didn't need" to strike bottom to sink, but it certainly could have struck bottom; it's a possibility. The Titanic didn't need to strike an iceberg to sink either, but it did. What we do know for sure is that the Fitz was taking on water and listing badly, evidenced by what Capt. McSorley said on the radio. So why was it taking on water? It was either coming in through the top or bottom or both. Thanks for watching! HMM
@BType13X2
@BType13X2 20 сағат бұрын
@@HistoryMysteryMan The Titanic didn't need to strike an Iceberg but we had the benefit of the survivors saying this is the root cause. We sadly have no one left to say definitively what the cause of the sinking was with the Fitz. We cannot definitively know, but one of the theories that the coast guard and investigators went and looked at closely was the Fitz being grounded. They said definitively that there was no evidence of a grounding on the shoal after they surveyed the shoal, there is no reason for them to lie about that finding. If the goal was to pin blame on the captain or crew a navigational error of getting to close to the shoal and grounding would achieve that nicely. So I don't think that they lied about that finding. As for why it was taking on water, the hatchcovers are a redherring. The Fitz was likely taking on water from the top and bottom. There is evidence of bent hatchcovers, heavy sea's bend / stress the covers they don't seal anymore. I don't think it has anything to do with how the crew would have secured the hatches at all. And McSorley didn't say they were taking on water and listing badley on the radio he said they were listing and taking on water his last radio message was that they were holding their own. That isn't something you say if your ship is critically compromised. His demeanor and the radio messages are why I believe the Fitz suffered a catastrophic hull failure. 100' of the ship is gone I firmly believe that that segment of hull failed so quickly and violently that the captain / crew could not react in time. The failure was so quick that unlike the Morel and Bradley the crew probably only processed what was happening before they could take any action to save themselves. Those boats had a few minutes on the surface when their hulls failed the Fitz did not. So you go from "Holding our own" to gone without a chance to send a mayday.

More awesome content! Never a dull moment with "Do It" Hewitt around and Charlie Swartz seems really down to earth. I don't really know too much about Charlie, other than he's a dirt lm legend and hall of famer, but what he said about the current state of racing really makes sense. I never met Jack, but I heard some good Jack Hewitt stories courtesy of his former TQ midget owner and buddy Dick Mahoney. Also, Diner With Racers did a good podcast with Jack a couple years back, you might want to check that out.

No problem HMM. Dinner (not Diner, that's my typo!) With Racers is really worth listening to. They do laid back and highly entertaining conversations/ interviews with famous current and past racing people over dinner. Most of the episodes are pretty long, some even 2 parts. They've been at it for several years, so there is a quite a library of episodes. Everybody from Don Garlits to Craig Breedlove to Will Power to Mark Martin. It was a personal favorite of Robin Miller (he was a guest as well) so that's good enough for me. I enjoy listening to various racing podcasts (including Dinner With Racers) while I drive or on my lunch at work. And that would be awesome to do another interview with Jack Hewitt. Hewitt is always highly entertaining and unfiltered. I've heard so many entertaining stories from various drivers about racing in Australia. Gary Patterson's Aussie adventures as told by Larry Rice are classic. I'm sure Jack has some good tales from down under too.

@@greggrauscher34 Looking forward to checking out Dinner with Racers! I'm sure I will learn a thing or two. I'd love to sit down with more personalities, rather than beat myself up at the track. But...it's hard to get interviews, especially for me because no one really knows who I am or what I do. If you're a Kenny Wallace or someone famous/well-known, you can pretty much get an interview whenever you want. But if you're me, it's far more challenging. It took me two years to get Steve Kinser...and truthfully it only happened when a good friend of his talked him into it. I'll keep trying. Your support is important to me. HMM

Hi Don. First and most important......it was really great seeing you again. This time last Thursday at Eldora. Jen and I enjoyed spending time with you. What a fun video to watch. Two greats. Was interesting to hear Jack talk about 'running the wall' at the Big E. Boy did a few of the drivers this past Kings Royal week. David Gravel said in his post Kings Royal interview that he doesn't like running the wall, but he had to .......to fend off the 15 car of Donny Schatz. Charlie is way-way too modest. That man flat out kicked butt at so many tracks in his day. And his wedge car was so darn cool. I'm in the process of educating myself more on Charlie. But it certainly hasn't taken long to learn he is a true legend and pioneer! No doubt about it Don. Once again, thanks for doing another interesting video. Your interviews really and truly help me appreciate the sport. Yes the cars are neat, and the racing exciting. But without knowing the racers, for me racing isn't complete.

We both remember the summer of 1976 and the Fitz' was not widely spoken of much by that summer until that song hit the airwaves and I lived in metro Detroit back then.
