In 2019 I had L4-L5 microdiscectomy, that gave me my life back, it was right leg sciatica 24h for years, I developed gastrointestinal problems because of the medication I was taking. My L4-L5 is awesome. Now a months ago I started having a pain in my left leg and now it’s like a nightmare I did MRI, severe herniation on L5-S1. I haven’t ever had stereoid injection. I am very scared I hope it’s gonna work, I can’t stand for more than a minute without a terrible pain. These two months were nightmare for me. I don’t want to have another surgery but I am absolutely open if injection does not help. You have to trust your surgeon. If I go back 5 years ago I would go surgery again, gave me life back. Everyone says CORE strength is the key, I haven’t listened but I hope after I recover this time I will. This pain is so exhausting mentally and life is so beautiful. Why to suffer like this. ❤️‍🩹

The injection you described is an interlaminar injection. A Transforaminal injection is done along the side of the spine near where the nerve roots exit from the spine. So glad you had good results. I had my L4-L5 transforaminal epidural 10 days ago. Pain is less but not completely gone but certainly manageable with meds.

I’ve thrown out my back (probably herniated but not confirmed by mri) more times than I can remember. Once you do it for the first time it gets easier to screw up your back. Be careful of your posture, stand instead of sit whenever possible, avoid heavy weights that put the load on your back.Just look at what happened to Ronnie Coleman, the bodybuilder. I would also suggest the book back mechanic. I think it’s by stuart mcgill. Also us tough guys need to listen to our bodies. If something hurts, don’t try to push through the back pain. Stop immediately. That’s what got me. I was trying to suck it up and not be a wimp in the moment and now it looks like I get to suck it up the rest of my life.

Factors influencing success: Severity of herniation: Smaller, contained herniations tend to have better outcomes than larger, extruded or sequestered ones. Duration of symptoms: Early intervention, typically within 6 months to a year, leads to better results. Underlying health conditions: Age, smoking, obesity, and other health issues can impact healing and outcomes. Surgeon's experience: Choosing a qualified and experienced neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon is crucial. Post-surgical rehabilitation: Completing physical therapy and adhering to activity restrictions post-surgery plays a vital role in long-term success.

Glad your surgery was successful! How long before you were back up and walking? I have this same surgery at the end of the month and then a cruise in mid February. Hoping I don’t have to cancel my vacation!

I had my microdiscectomy done two days ago. Of course every case is different but please do not expect that the pain will just go away. I can see some people making statements like that when researching the topic on the web. I do still feel pain caused by sciatic nerve as it has not fully recovered yet. The nerves take more time to heal than muscle tissue. I do feel the muscle pain in my back but not to the point of it being unbearable, so I’m avoiding painkillers now that I’m home. I was getting metamizol in my IV and some ketoprofen pills right after the surgery and on the next day (If you are in US I hope they don’t hit you with some opioid based junk). As far as movement is concerned, I was walking on the very day of my surgery but very slowly and not a whole lot, pretty much going to the toilet and back to bed. You need to be careful with how you get up from the bed and lay down on it. I got the whole list of instructions on what to do and what not to do. I’m sure they will provide you with this info in the clinic. If I were you, I’d honestly cancel the cruise… I’m in similar situation where I had something planned for mid February and decided to postpone it until at least April. Take time to rest after the surgery, take baby steps first (literally and figuratively) and get a good physiotherapist when you’re ready for it. Then book a cruise and enjoy it to the full extent. If you have any questions, please message me. Take care and good luck!!

Do you remember how big (in mm) was you L5-S1 disc herniation (protrusion)? I was diagnosed exactly with the same thing, 7mm, MRI technician asked me to stay after the MRI and told me it's important I don't wait for 'description' or mRI but just immediately go to consult the professors what to do, I went, and had prepared many questions about what I can do and what not, but first words of prof was 'consider a surgery' (and the same prof didn't push at all for surgery my friend who was in far worse pain). I was quite in shock. But at that time I was already in UPWARDS trend, improving every week, just because I KNEW exactly was caused by problem (horrific position with computer), stopped it 100%, and even reversed it (new position is kneeling forward, exactly like physio's recommend to exercise, so to me it's not an exercise I just do it ~ 10 times per day for few minutes). Results after about 3 months of my ordeal (actually since a month I wouldn't even call it ordeal anymore) are more than satisfactory and I'm optimist for further improvement. I walk without a limp already (though still not a 100% definitely). Not taking any risks in the gym (no any overhead lifting etc), but doing everything else. My personal advice (I'm NOT any medical professional!!) to anyone dealing with spine problem: identify what is exact CAUSE of the problem in your case, and eliminate it totally.

I’m glad I studied herniated disc , bulging disc and sciatica. I had no clue where my pain was coming from. I would hear what the problem was but I had no vision or image of it. Now I’m clear on the problem. The market is full of things to help your back that do not work. For now I’m exercising my back muscles more than any other muscle. I’m Also eating foods that can help with inflammation. Knowing how to eat helps with pain. Let’s see what happens from now to a year later.

My surgery was a 100% success!!! I have zero regrets. Finally I have my life back. I was only able to walk in sandals before the laminectomy & microdiscectomy. Physical therapy starts after my 1st in person follow up appointment with the surgeon on 11/29/23. Initially, there was some slight electric zap pain and foot numbness, however, day by day it's disappearing and now I have the leg strength back with MUCH better balance. The surgery seemed like it was 10 seconds. The hardest part is not having the ability to smoke/dab weed/concentrates which REALLY helps with sleep. Smoking delays healing and can JEOPARDIZE the whole surgery. The longer you wait, the longer it takes to heal after an operation like this. Why? Because the nerve is compressed longer, thus a longer healing time. The hardest part is watching a 80 year old lady having more mobility in a Balance of Nature commercial than yourself because you cannot bend, lift, or twist for weeks. And no sleeping is allowed on your stomach-I'm a stomach sleeper so I use cannabis edibles but I really miss taking 1 dab to feel that Mike Tyson knockout blow to chill out and naturally pass out!

I had L4-L5 epidural steroid injections done 2 weeks ago and it didn't even help so now I need surgery done. I have a herniated disc and a small tear in the nerve and what caused this problem and I was rear ended 6 months ago and I was hospitalized overnight observation just incase I needed a blood transfusion or emergency surgery because I had internal bleeding and liver lacerations.

I can definitely agree. I’m on my day 10 of recovery and I was walking fine on day 7. No nerve tightness or pain, some painless spasms because I was caught off guard by a sneeze, did have that stiffness but that’s just the bone healing. All in all I’ll expect myself to be back to running within a month and gym within 3. Will definitely take it easy and let the the disc heal along with toughening the bone but had no pain apart from the stitches healing but my wound closed in 5 days and I showered on day 5 too. Just don’t bend your back and walk everyday to your tolerance and increase your walking thereafter. After your first sleep, it’ll heal your wound faster than lying down.

@@Noseyy well for the first week my back was sorer than it was before. I guess the actual steroid can put pressure on your nerve and trigger more pain. But eventually my body absorbed it and I started feeling better. By the 2nd week I was feeling a little better than I was before I got the shot. I noticed I didnt need my heated back brace every night anymore, so it seems the shot helped.
