After a few trips down the Petawawa, we changed planning from, "What will we need if it rains?" to, "What will we need because it will rain?" It seemed that only after we had embraced the reality of rain that the sun would ever come out (cuz for sure, if you plan on needing it to come out on day 3 or 4, it won't come out til day 5.)

We are currently Florida tent campers. We have seen a lot about popups and with a 4cy truck we are limited to alot of hard sided campers. My question is this, do they stay cool during the host summer or are they just has hot as a tent. We have a 12k BTU portable AC unit that works wonders once the sun is directly off the tent mid day, nights we can get it sub 68 degrees, but mid days are brutal. The other thing we are looking at is the set up time, I see alot of popups take as much time as it would with a tent. Just looking for guidance to see if it would be worth jumping into or just saving the cash. Thanks so much
@robandmirjana
@robandmirjana 3 ай бұрын
It doesn’t get too hot! The 360 degrees of air flow helps. On super hot days, we usually run the AC and it stays pretty cool. I’m not sure the AC specs, but it requires 30amp electricity. Setup can take some time at the bringing but gets quicker once you learn. Honestly just parking and leveling the trailer can take the longest depending on the site. We think it’s a great upgrade vs the tent!!!

@robandmirjana
@robandmirjana 3 ай бұрын
If it’s only water in there you shouldn’t get mold! Usually at the start of each year we sanitize with water and a bit of bleach and do a couple rinses. You can also just use that water tank for dishes and drink with refillable water bottles. At the end of the trip we just drain as much water out as we can!

I'd like to see More detail on the actual leveling at the beginning. You kind of brushed over that part.😏 HOW did you get the levelling blocks under the tires??? We've been fortunate that our sites have been level, so far. BUT, I have watched folks park on hilly sites. and I don't always catch.how, because I get busy setting up our own.
@robandmirjana
@robandmirjana 4 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks for the comment! it’s basically a process of trial and error! I have a small level i use to first guess how many blocks we need. We then put them behind the wheels, drive on to them, and re-check the level. If it’s off, then I’ll drive off, add/remove a block, and check again. Sometimes it takes 3 times. But it’s pretty quick if you keep someone in the drivers seat, and someone else’s adding/removing blocks

We bought an electric heater to use in our tent, 4 yrs ago. It got down to 25° that weekend. 😮 It's so quiet, and a campout saver! I'd also recommend a swivel fan. Kids gifted us a really quiet fan that really puts out the breeze. We keep that, and the heater in the storage space under the seat when not camping. We also have a coffeemaker, and small microwave in our pop up. They sit on our counter by the plug, and have been a campout saver more than once. They store under that counter when not camping. Next to the appliances is a wide Sterlite 3 drawer unit for food. It travels full in the car because it's too tall to stand in camper upright. But it stores in there on the side when not camping. Cooking utensils, potholders, matches and lighters are in shoebox sized latching bins like you have, with cutting boards, bowls, pots and pans underneath. We don't have built in drawers, and the cubby holes are odd shaped. But we managed to make our camping/cooking gear fit where they would get used the most and still easy to get to. Oh, one more tip--the zippered rectangular insulated totebags sold all over holds our coffeemaker nicely, and we keep it in there, with filters, under the counter when not camping. Cushioned, but we also wrap the carafe in a dishtowel to protect it for travel/storage. We love our pop up. Fits our camping needs, and stores in the garage.😊

Rob - Excellent video. We had a very basic popup (Jayco) for many years until the box rotted to the point of no return. Until it fell apart we loved it. We soon will be in the market for a new popup and have been checking out KZfaq for information. Your video was extremely informative. I've watch the professional RV salesmen video's and your video blows them away. I think the Rockwood 1940ltd looks like it's perfect for us. I also like the idea of the rack for bicycles and/or other stuff e.g., cargo box. Also the AC is a great addition especially if you cannot get a shady campsite or the temps are really hot. Did you purchase yours new or was it used? Anyway, thank you, well done.
@robandmirjana
@robandmirjana 5 ай бұрын
Thank you! We appreciate the comment! We got ours “used”, but it was basically new. The previous owner only had it for a year and it looked like it was only used a few times. A/C and bike/kayak racks are awesome. Only thing we regret is not having hot water, so maybe an upgraded model (like ESP) would be nice! If you bbq a lot, then hot water helps a ton with dishes. The kettle we use is ok, but not the same as on demand. Good luck. Cheers!

Great video Rob! It is much more informative than the sales pitch type videos. We are looking at the exact same 2023 model. How did you find the mattresses? It's hard to see their thickness. I would be adding extra foam support I believe.
@robandmirjana
@robandmirjana 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! It’s a great model and we definitely recommend! The only drawback is not having hot water, but a small portable kettle does the trick (sort of). The mattresses are really nice and being able to heat them is a gamechanger. They are probably about 3-4 inches thick. Sometimes you can feel the wood plank underneath (if side sleeping for example) so adding the foam pads help with that! You can probably even double up on the pads, but I haven’t tried it. We only have the pads on one bed, only because I haven’t had a chance to get the other ones yet. But haven’t had any sleeping complaints.

@@robandmirjana Hey Rob. Thanks for the reply. One other question, I saw your comment that you had used another vehicle to tow your trailer which was rated at 2000 lbs. We have a Ford Escape that is rated for the same lbs. I'm thinking although we are under weight, I think we are OK. Any thoughts? We also have the Froli Sleep System that I may put in but it may elevate the mattresses to high. BTW I see you did the video at Oastler. We are from Muskoka and love the parks in the Parry Sound and Algonquin regions.
@robandmirjana
@robandmirjana 5 ай бұрын
@@bobwhite2521 yeah, we sometimes take my Jeep which has a 2000lb limit. You can definitely feel the pull so we try not to take it too often or too far, and only if it’s us 2 driving (not 4-5 people in the car). But to be fair, when we go backcountry camping or skiing with 5 people (no trailer) it’s still slow to accelerate. Not sure how the escape will perform but you can try. Also I haven’t heard of that sleep system so not sure! You live in a great area! Soo many nice lakes nearby :)

Your trailer has "limit switch" settings for the UP motion AND down motion. You don't have to depend on watching the "green wire". When lowering the roof, the down limit switch will turn off the motor when the roof comes down all the way AND keeps slight tension on the wire when adjusted correctly. Therefore, when raising the roof, the motor stops AUTOMATICALLY, even if you continue to hold the switch in up position! And the same thing when lowering the roof. The motor stops AUTOMATICALLY when lowering the roof, even if you continue to keep the switch pushed down! The adjustment screws are under the cover that holds the up-down switch!
@robandmirjana
@robandmirjana 6 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks for the comment. That’s good to know. Ours defiantly aren’t set correctly (maybe since it was used). I held it too long once and the green wire snapped (I had to fix it). Likewise when we lower the roof, even through it’s down, I can still push the bottom and the motor stays on. It might also be dependent on the model. I could test it by just holding it up, but dont wanna see what happens lol.
