Thanks for sharing. No bees yet but , I am tracking wild bees in my area of Japan and setting up traps of bamboo and grass skeps that I have made my self . Caping off old pipes and making narrow entrances hoping to catch several swarms. This is a new adventure not owning but building and hopefully catching bees myself. Some people reduce the space for the winter . Maybe check your records of their progress and determine when to reduce living space or when to feed them their own honey) I like that!) thank you h or this informative video! How have they fared since then?
@johndrieman3115
@johndrieman3115 4 жыл бұрын
I made 2 splits that summer, but all 4 colonies starved to death the following winter, even though there was still honey in the hives. They just could not get to it because the winter was steadily cold. Due to the grand solar minimum? Who knows. I gave up bee keeping. I tried catching wild swarms too, but no luck, maybe you will have more success.
@timothymitchell9956
@timothymitchell9956 4 жыл бұрын
I think the answer is insulation winter and summer because, insulation mean cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Please don’t give up , try the leave them alone method until harvest time.

WAY more steps and parts to cleanup than I prefer. You've got multiple racks to clean and a million bits of wax in the honey requiring a multi stage process. Far easier to cut your capped comb into a bowl or bucket then crush to rupture all the comb cells. Pour that mix into a nylon net bag made for honey extraction and let it drain into your storage container. Two steps, and done. The wax stays behind in the nylon filter bag where it can be rinsed clear of honey residue and melted down for whatever you want to use it for. Beautiful top bar comb though!!

Is there any pros to extracting honey using this method as opposed to the modern method? Seems wasteful and inefficient
@johndrieman3115
@johndrieman3115 4 жыл бұрын
Can't use a centrifugal extractor because there are no frames. Nothing is wasted, all honey is extracted and wax is used for candles. Its not inefficient, just time consuming. But then this is a hobby, not a business,
@weirjwerijrweurhuewhr588
@weirjwerijrweurhuewhr588 4 жыл бұрын
You can taste more flavors of honey. If you extract it only makes sense to extract twice a year with all the work cleaning etc. So the different type of honey flavors will be mixed. Crush and strain makes more sense if you want to harvest smaller batches, and some people say pressed honey tastes better.
@rhauser7731
@rhauser7731 4 жыл бұрын
Honey comb centrifuges have been around for at least a couple of centuries. Such would be much faster , much easier, much more efficient, and much cleaner than the approach demonstrated here.

I just cut a rectangular hole in a follower board and nailed a piece of queen excluder over it. If your entrance is right at the end of the hive that is where the queen will lay and you should not need an excluder anyway.

I am wondering why did you harvest those honey with brood? You should leave those combs alone. I had been working on top bar hives for 17 years and usually those combs right at the back (roughly 10 to 12 combs are all without brood).
@johndrieman3115
@johndrieman3115 5 жыл бұрын
Those are not brood combs. Without a queen excluder the queen will lay eggs in some of the honey comb, mostly drones in this case. It is a good idea to remove some drone comb to manage mites. I never harvest honey from brood comb.
