This was a arrangement done by Alexander Courage himself, he and Jerry were close friends and Courage did many orchestrations for him over his career, for this scene Jerry called Courage on his home phone and told to arrange the theme in low from between 15 to 35 seconds, however in subsequent Star Trek films the titular Star Trek Fanfare would be utilised by Jerry, James Horner, Leonard Rosenman, Dennis Mccarthy and Michael Giacchino, The Original Series theme has only been used in 4 films in the series, by Horner in the End credits of Star Trek III by Leonard Rosenman in a unused cue for Star Trek IV and also in the scene when the crew see the Enterprise A for the first time, it was used again though extremely subtly by Cliff Eidelman in the Sign Off track in Star Trek VI and it was used briefly with the first few notes played on a Trumpet in Star Trek Beyond by Michael Giacchino in the scene when Spock finds a photo of Prime Spock and the Prime timeline Enterprise A crew.

This track is finally on the new 3 cd release of The Motion Picture soundtrack from La La Land Records, as well as the main title theme as it was heard in the film, with the stronger percussion. I was very glad to have bought the set as it contains every piece of music composed for the film and the alternate takes as well. As an added bonus, the last disc has the vocal version of Ilia's Theme sung by Shaun Cassidy called A Star Beyond Time. Found that one on youtubes as well awhile back.
