Thank you for making this video. I am a teacher about to start my 9th year of teaching but still feeling very incompetent. I have recently starting exploring an ADHD diagnosis and I stumbled across your video. I found myself nodding in agreement with everything you said. I’ve had trouble with colleagues and evaluations too! I hope to keep following your content!

What a great explanation! Very good job, and yay for you on harnessing automating to your advantage. I imagine that sometimes you get comments about your way of working or feel like an imposter, but you are doing an awesome job at managing it. Small thing, as an adhd student, verbal commentary is nice but some added words, especially the positive or important ones in writing are important since we forget positives easily.

I actually originally designed my office to make it a place that I actually wanted to be to try to give myself some dopamine to make me stay in it longer. And then I chose that wall to film in front of because I thought it looked nice. My office is really small, so it was a good room for me to start with to try to keep it organized.

'You were just lazy in high school'. Ouch. All my school 'career' (and it was a long one due to being held back, what should have taken 6 years took 8) I was told that I was a 'promising student who just needed to apply herself', and when I finally did graduate and went to uni, things really spiralled out of control with binge eating disorder and having issues trying to navigate life. I am undiagnosed, but the more I learn about ADHD, the more boxes I can tick. I'll be 50 at the end of this year, I am dreading the process but a diagnosis would really help. Now to actually make that phonecall and get the ball rolling.....

So many people talk about routine. Its SOOOOO true. I started working after being a home maker for basically 15 years. I held a few jobs on and off, I work my butt off, but cant stand dysfunctional management. My last job blew my mind. Same issues. Compleatly different mind frame, (kids are older and way more self sufficient, turn in husbands' career was overwhelming positive for or family so I was very stress free and I had stopped drinking and had a better sleep and exercise schedule) So I immediately excelled in my new job. Heavy labor, chill small crew, I was also the only female. I did so well I was offered promotion to manager in another department. I talked it over with my family everybody said go fo it. BAM Immediatly fed me up. I kept my routine, but suddenly was working 11 12 hour shifts 5 to 6 days a week. My home life suffered, I starded losing my temper with my kids more and I started swearing after pretty much quitting my potty mouth. on my days off, I was lost, My home chores suffered, my hygine sucked, and my sleep would just NO. Staying up late watching stupid youtube just wasting away. So I quit. I approached my dr, told him multiple people said I have ADHD. Do I? he laughed at me 'darling, I knew that about you about the first 3 minutes of ever knowing you' we talked meds, I took adderal like the generic kind. Literally first dose, 20mg i felt my mind go from racing thoughts to clarity. I was motivated but not manic. I started on one end of my house, logically cleaned, I had great talks with my kids. I have functioned very well with adhd my adult life, pulling myself from sucidal depression to being very efficent and useful. Very positive and did the whole grown up mature thing. I never associated my inconsistency in motivation, my need to force myself to do tasks I really dont mind, let alone love, My mania I thought was from coffee, My distructive hiccups when my routine shifts to adhd. I just thought, Some women are really good at this stuff I need a bit more grace time. My new problem. Appitie SUCKS. and i love food and love to cook, I am very healthy and exercise regularly. But now I cant eat, i legit have to force feed myself. and I cant sleep. and I take my meds at like 7;30 am ive been on them a week, well 6 days with day breaks here and there on days I didnt neeed my brain power a smuch because it was like a hard labor day. does that make sense? My typing sucks right now because I didnt sleep a wink last night. so my eyes are a bit jumpy. I had to take my dose because today is a needed brain day. When will these strong effects wear off and my body get less amped up. Mond you im not this way when their strong in my system, Its when they wear off i start to feel a bit strung out, but not tired. I feel relaxed but cant like profit from the relaxed feeling. I like the dose, I tried half a few times and it was just too little. I dont want any higher of a dose. what am I doing wrong? I still get myself in bed for my sleep routine, Im actually excited to sleep because i am so much more productive during the day Im not fillid with guilt for being a crap show. BUT I CANT SLEEP. HELP!! haha!! Oh and I agree with so much of what this Lady said of her adult experience before the meds. The temper and hyper description from my husband. Very similar to my experience.

Thank you for sharing, I suspect I have ADHD, which probably explains why I get depressed at big holidays because, while I love having my family over, I get overwhelmed with all that I have to do for the big day. Happens every year for as far back as I can remember. I'm 65 years old. When the big family dinner is over, I am so happy that I was able to pull it off, I am so happy to enjoy my family (they're a great bunch) and then I revert back to procrastinating, having a messy house, putting off things I should be doing, being extremely disorganized... basically adulting.

When I heard the first struggle that you mentioned (planning), it was a relief for me that someone understand that feeling. Thank you SO much. i am so glad to discover you. One of my main problems is trying to explain this to my mother. It is especially difficult for people to understand how your office/house/room can be such a mess and how that would relate to ADHD. I am not trying to look for excuses. I am just trying to help people realize where I am coming from, which usually seems like outer space to my family members. :)

When I was in university I was told by a psychologist that I didn't have adhd because my report cards when I was a kid didn't mention being disruptive. However, everytime I see something about women and adhd it resonates so strongly and I see myself. And I did have a temper, was spacey, and really disorganized and messy as a child. Has anyone had a similar experience and found out that they actually did have adhd? I'm wondering now if he thought I was just trying to get medicated.
@theadhdacademic537

I think that could be a common occurrence. They do want to see evidence that it existed in childhood though so I could see that maybe they were trying to use your school records as evidence. So mine never said disruptive but they would say like that I talked too much.

Many girls with ADHD get missed because they're not outwardly disruptive. They often end up getting diagnosed later in life. There's still a horrible amount of bias and misunderstanding amongst so-called mental health professionals. But it's becoming more recognised now that girls and women often present as having primarily inattentive type ADHD. That psychologist is behind the times and is doing damage through his or her ignorance. If I were you, I'd definitely seek out somebody who understands about how's ADHD presents in girls and in adults. It may require seeing a few different people before you find someone who is up to date with their knowledge. Good luck, you deserve proper help and understanding 🙂

There so much I’d like to say…but please know how much I appreciate you and for putting yourself out there. I have been experiencing everything you mentioned. I am seeing a new psychiatric practitioner that I do really well with. I’m looking into equine therapy that includes psychotherapy. Trying to find what works best. What's hard for me to justify actually going to get a legitimate diagnosis is how popular it has become recently to claim/be diagnosed with adhd. Makes me feel like I might just be lazy or kind of dumb. It being so popular makes me gaslight myself into thinking it's not real.

I’m thinking I’m neurodivergent. I’m getting closer to the answer. I’m thankful my primary took my concerns seriously. Many doctors came in and laid out what they were going to do as in different referrals to the correct professionals for me and then follow up to see how I’m fairing. I’m just encouraging you especially if it’s affecting your life in a way that’s really debilitating. That’s the only reason I went in. Good luck.

I felt similar to you when I got my diagnosis. So I just explained everything that wasn’t working for me in my life and was as honest as I know how to be. And they diagnosed me and then when I started on the meds and they worked so clearly for me it became really obvious that this is a true diagnosis for me. If your symptoms are affecting your every day life then you deserve to pursue a diagnosis and help.

Im a guy studying engineering and just got diagnosed with ADHD at 37. I went through the same run around of being diagnosed with depression and stuff beforehand for year (did much more harm than good). I knew I wasn't sad fundamentally. I can't get myself to clean my house because I just don't even think about it. But then I can't invite anyone around because I get anxious that they might think its a mess. Starting meds has changed my life because I realized that I have to prioritize things, I can't just focus on what I find interesting while the rest of my world falls apart around me. Thanks a lot for these videos, I find them quite inspiring and very relatable in my case. Cheers from Australia.
