Just for info, as I've read and heard a lot of people comment about the grey heat sink above the black M.2 heat sink, even pro building channels! It's not for decoration it's a heat sink for the VRM via the heatpipe and the chipset which is located below the M.2 drive, that's why it does not make contact with the M.2 heatsink and straddles it. If you leave it off you will often see lower temps for your M.2 drive, as it's exposed rather than being in a tunnel like metal shroud. The trade off though is you'll have higher temps in your chipset and VRM. If you're not pushing your board and your ambient temperature isn't too high it shouldn't be an issue, but it's there for a reason and it does have a purpose. I would recommend people leave it on if it's not causing an issue with clearance for other components like a low set CPU cooler. If you have to remove it you should ideally monitor your temperatures and if they are high, consider supplementary cooling for that area, like a fan for directing air flow that way. If you run your board hot all the time, best case you may reduce it's working life, worst case it could fail. Very helpful video for installing the M.2 drive though, as a lot of new builders can be confused by that second retaining nut.

Hi there, thanks for the comments. I did check the RAM on the Gigabyte list and also Gskill tested the RAM with the mbo. Strangely enough I think some of my issues are the 4090 needs more SOC voltage to be stable. Sometimes the GPU was locked to a low speed on boot. In afterburner the temp limit was stuck on 0 deg. I was also getting internet not working on some boots. I increased the SOC voltage to 1.3v and this seems to help so far. For some reason on some boots the soc voltage under 7900x shows a 0.05v inconsistency which I have not tracked down yet. It maybe the LLC auto setting. I was also disappointed with the 74ns latency using this expensive RAM. It does seem though the secondary timings can do much better at VDD & VDDQ 1.35v. VDDQ was at 1.25v on auto which I think is not correct. I am currently getting 63ns which seems alot better, Regards

It is painful to address those issue without having spare parts to swap with. If you are in the return windows, just return cpu, motherboard and ram all together. If you passed return window. You could try following things. Sometimes, you have to buy extra components to swap with. Make sure you can return it afterwards. 1. Try to limit temperature to 85c. On default 95c, it seems to crash occasionally on my build (7950x). 2. Try to disable expo. If that fixes the issue, the issue is most memory related. 3. Try to stress test without GPU installed. For your information, my G.Skill Flare x5 DDR5-5600 16GBx2 expo kit was faulty. Sometimes my system would not reboot, got stuck at dram training. Two sticks behaved same when tested individually (bad batch?). Swapping with a new kit fixed my issue. Always start from simple things, such as memory sticks, cpu. Motherboard should be the last thing to be swapped.

Hi there, thanks for the comments. I am slowing understanding this new system. I seem now to be running stable and being able to boot into windows helps. I think the main issue was actually the VDDQ voltage was set to 1.25v, now running this at 1.335v. This actually lets me run at 6000mhz, 30,38,38,56,94. I suspect it probably should also be running at 1.35v so have a bit left in hand. I think the main problem was I didnt get the issues until I put the PCIE4 GPU in so suspected the GPU. I think its just this GPU pushes the RAM a lot harder showing the issues. Regards

Hi there, thanks for the comments. I suspect some of the issues are the same as mine especially with the 2 sticks. If the memory timings are unstable you wont be able to use EXPO or PBO, this was the same for me. Mine even ran great on a 970, it wasnt until I used the 4090 that it pushed the system hard enough to have the issues. I would recommend getting into the Bios and typing all the timing in. Turn on EXPO first, check it is applying the correct voltage. Running the 4 sticks you may need to push more voltage in different places. There are about 4 or 5 that you would need to change I suspect to get it running. If you dont want to do this I suspect Gigabyte will release an updated Bios in the near future. You could even loosen the secondary timing by adding 10 more points or 10% more to each one and then see if its stable. Also check the actual timings it running as I did in the Vid and check against the RAM timings, you may find the smoking Gun. Hope this helps Regards

Intel 12th gen and 13th gen is nearly identical (except for the performance bump via L2 cache), so no growing pains there since the platform is mature. I have the same motherboard with a 7950X. I think this is just one of those classic early adopter pains. The consensus seems to be that the memory controller on Ryzen 7000 is just not very mature given that its their first product with DDR5, especially with four sticks. Intel 12th gen was the same way. This was my experience with it and RAM: Bought a kit of 2x32 GB G.skill trident Z5 6000 MHz (So I think something close to what you have, except it has XMP and not EXPO). It ran fine at 6000 MHz with XMP on. I ended up returning this kit and got two 2x32GB (so 128GB total) of g.skill ripjaws S5 6000 MHz. It would not boot two sticks with XMP on. It would, however, boot at 6000 MHz but with all timings kept at auto. This tells me that either the motherboard or the memory controller (or both) are just finicky when it comes to certain timings at higher frequencies. I stress tested 4x32GB with memtest86 up to 4800 MHz with timings on auto and it was stable and error-free for 10+ hrs. I have not attempted to go above 4800 MHz as I just don't think seeking out 5 ish percent more performance is worth the time and energy. Just my humble opinion which you absolutely do not have to listen to: Overpaying for components suck, but constant troubleshooting that prevents you from using them at all sucks more. Stress test the memory using memtest86 and keep it at the highest setting at which it is stable and error-free. Then either call it a day or return the memory and try again with a different kit. If you keep it then just consider it future proofing for when AMD improves the memory controller or when BIOS updates fix things. 6000 MHz will probably serve you well in to the future, regardless of whether or not annoying early adopter bugs prevent you from running it at that speed right now. AMD calls 6000 MHz the "sweet spot" , which kind of makes it seem like if you don't run it at that speed that the performance will drop off suddenly or something. It doesn't. I noticed maybe a 10% difference between 3600 MHz and 6000 MHz when putting all 32 threads under load and maybe 5% between 4800 MHz and 6000 MHz. The equivalent single-threaded test had no difference within the margin of error. I would guess that it just doesn't matter very much except for extremely memory-intensive workloads. In a blind test most people probably couldn't tell the difference for many applications.
@dex2531
@dex2531 Жыл бұрын
XMP and EXPO is essentially the same thing. XMP is a coined Intel moniker, which just means performance memory timings. AMD had to change the naming, originally was called AMP but then moved to EXPO. The name doesn't matter, what matters is whether the motherboard supports the memory and the timings. Which looks like this board does not, it's missing a lot of the stock timings out of the box, which leads me to point at the board itself. This is not a Ryzen 7000 issue per say, it's more like Gigabyte with poor compatibility support to DDR5 memory. I would suggest swapping the board to either Asrock, MSI or Asus.

Many thanks for the comments and time you have taken to put this together. The main problem for me was the system was running fine (Ram 6000Mhz) with an old 970 GPU before the new one arrived. The new GPU had a problem of its own and this GPU also must have pushed the RAM to the limits that didnt show up with the 970. So I couldnt get into the Bios because of the 4090 black screen issue, and the system then crashed. So I flashed the 4090 firmware, not Bios, to get rid of the black screen issue first. Then I was able to fault find the rest of the system. I was a hairs width away from firing up memtest86 but I was sure this would show errors anyways. I almost was going to try the Asus Mem tweakkit to try to adjust the timings from inside windows howver I know the risk is a corrupted windows installation. After these changes the system seems 100% stable so only time will tell. I also agree with the RAM not making much difference. I would think the difference between the 4800 and 6000 to be less than 5%. The problem was I paid for the 6000 so wanted to use it no matter what. I think it was worth looking into the issue as I suspect lots of other people are having the same problems. Regards

Hi there, thanks for the comments. I did check to see if the motherboard supported the RAM before buying it, and it does. AMD pushed the sweet spot of 6000 CL30 which is what I paid for. GSkill also highlighed they tested the RAM with the Gigabyte motherboard. However when you set the EXPO on the motherboard, for some reason, the mbo overclocks some of the timings making the system not stable. I think this is happening at the PC startup which I suspect happens on all 7000 systems. After the timing changes the system is stable and fast, best to keep the devil you know and all... Regards

Hi there, yes, its really annoying paying for 6000Mhz CL30 RAM to have to run it at 4800Mhz CL40, to even get into windows. I am just glad it was a configuration issue rather than the hardware itself. I just thought others could have the same issues hence the quick video. My worst experience was actually a EVGA motherboard with the 680i sli Nvidia chipset which came out with the core 2 duo. So have seen a few issues getting the latest hardware in the past. Many thanks for the comments.

Have you tried another psu?

Hi there, I didnt try another psu. I did have a spare but the Antec one is really a seasonic titanium prime. I have used these as the OEM for many years without any issues. After sorting out the RAM settings the system has been 100% stable without any issues. I think it is the RAM training at the PC startup that is the issue and the mbo using settings that are better than the RAM stated timings. Thanks for the comment.

Try running EXPO2 settings. Expo1 allows the MB to auto adjust the timings and EXPO2 sets them exactly how the ram sticks are rated for

Hi there thanks for the reply. This is good to know. At the minute my Bios doesnt seem to have this option. Maybe this will get added at a later date. Thanks

This looks like a gigabyte mb issue rather then 7000 ryzen issue. GB boards are notoriously bad with ram compatibility and timings and not only on ryzen system. on 12th gen intel they were even more craptastic.

Thanks for the comments, yes but I wasnt sure if the long boot times and ram training at boot up which could effect other peoples PC's could also be the issue. I think Gigabyte will bring out an updated Bios that is not a beta version a bit later which I am sure will solve this issue, it's just how long it takes for them to do this. Just hoping others in the same situation can see this and get their PC up and running reliably. PC does have amazing performance and is now reliable which makes all the difference. Many thanks

I second this. I had a Gigabyte X570 Aorus board for my previous AM4 setup, never touching another Gigabyte product again. They never fixed basic features in the motherboard, I could never get ReBar working on that board despite fiddling for hours in the bios, and it had poor PCIe generation recognition ie; Gen 4, or Gen3 and gave me black screens on reboot that required a CMOS clear with a different GPU. Their BIOS releases were also very slow compared to competitors.

I had the same problem with the 7900x. Literally did everything I could and gave up. Returned it to MC and went intel...13700k ddr4 MSI MB and 4080fe. So happy now. No issues. Hope everything went well with you!

Many thanks for the comments. At least I am not the only one. This one was not easy to spot for me as I had no problems using an old GTX970 while waiting for the new GPU. All the crashing started when inserting pcie4 card. But the issue was these RAM timings which could be issues on lots of other peoples PC's, hence the quick video. Glad the 13700k is working well. One reason I went with Nvidia again. I just didnt like the limited pcie lanes with Intel, this was my main reason for going AMD with the cpu. Many thanks

@@nivea878 Yes, its a gigabyte board. Seems I still have some issues. Now waiting for a non-beta bios to be released to see if this sorts the issues. Regards

@@cuongtang9539 Hi there, yes, all working perfectly now. I had to change the SOC voltage to 1.34v in the mbo which gives cpu 1.29v shown in HWMonitor. This solved the gpu issue and always boots correctly now. Regards

I have two systems running 7000 series. ones a 7700x and other is 7950x and not having the issues you are reporting here. Biggest issue is long boot times.

Thanks for the comments. Sounds good. This is the way things should work. I suspect the mbo is trying to squeeze the last drop of performance at pc startup when the RAM training happens. This wasnt easy to spot as the first timings are correct and the ones I usually check as they give more performance. I suspect when the platform is out a bit longer Gigabyte will bring out a better Bios that is tuned better. My startup times have always been okay, which maybe the problem. Best to type in all the timings, boot once, then enable fast startup. Thanks

@@deanjallen6449 No problem man.. Thanks for the video and information.. Will try to set up timings. But guess I got lucky with the no crashing.. Likely because I went with 5600mhz and not 6000mhz

my 5200 mhz sticks don't boot unless they are 4800 mhz
@deanjallen6449

Thanks for the comments. After applying the Expo or XMP settings you need to make sure the voltage changes to what the RAM has on it. Maybe 1.2v for 5200. Double check all timings are correct and manually type them in so the system cannot change them at pc startup. This should work, if not try uping the voltage a bit. Hope this helps.

@@thealien_ali3382 Hi there, only 2 sticks. Its an aorus x670e master. It also appears my gpu also sometimes boots in safe mode when running 6000mhz. I have also had ethernet drop outs. I have tried changing voltages especially SOC but its still really doddgy. Now running my 6000mhz cl30 at 4800 cl40 aswell as I am now fed up. There are some major issues with this platform. I will flash a later mbo bios soon and maybe do another video if it works. Regards
