Very helpful video, thank you kindly for posting! I had a heck of a time getting the m.2 heat sink (the part with the sticky pad attached) to come free from the post. I kept checking around the back of the board thinking I missed a screw somewhere. I ended up prying at it a bit with a pair of needle nosed pliers. The metal on the end of the heat sink is very easy to bend.

Great vid! Waiting for mine to arrive. BTW, putting that final block WILL worsen your m.2 temp by 5-10c, and you were right that leaving it out is actually better. Or, you could put some thermal pads between the two. A gent from reddit performed some tests.
@deanjallen64493 жыл бұрын
Good tip! I suspected as much. The block doesnt actually make contact with the m.2 heatsink. It may help with the chipset temps though so I thought I would leave it in place. This transfers the heat just through the bolting face though so I suspect it doesnt make much difference. Just be careful tightening the screws as they have small threads and a few people have commented on they broke the nuts. Just need to nip them. Thanks for the info.

Just for info, as I've read and heard a lot of people comment about the grey heat sink above the black M.2 heat sink, even pro building channels! It's not for decoration it's a heat sink for the VRM via the heatpipe and the chipset which is located below the M.2 drive, that's why it does not make contact with the M.2 heatsink and straddles it. If you leave it off you will often see lower temps for your M.2 drive, as it's exposed rather than being in a tunnel like metal shroud. The trade off though is you'll have higher temps in your chipset and VRM. If you're not pushing your board and your ambient temperature isn't too high it shouldn't be an issue, but it's there for a reason and it does have a purpose. I would recommend people leave it on if it's not causing an issue with clearance for other components like a low set CPU cooler. If you have to remove it you should ideally monitor your temperatures and if they are high, consider supplementary cooling for that area, like a fan for directing air flow that way. If you run your board hot all the time, best case you may reduce it's working life, worst case it could fail. Very helpful video for installing the M.2 drive though, as a lot of new builders can be confused by that second retaining nut.

Cheers for this video, I never would have got it right. The instructions that came with my board are actually totally wrong, they say "Locate the proper mounting hole for the M." SSD to be installed and then tighten the standoff first. Insert the M.2 SSD into the M.2 connector at an angle. Press the M.2 SSD down and secure it with a screw." If I'd followed these instructions I would have caused damage to my SSD by having the end 2mm too high and trying to tighten the heatsink and SSD down in one go. Really not good enough Gigabyte!

@deanjallen64493 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thanks for the comments. The primary drive with the operating system needs to go in the front slot as shown. The front slot talks directly with the CPU so it is very fast. The second drive if you have one goes on the reverse side of the motherboard. Depending on the case and case cut-out, you may need to remove the motherboard from the case to fit this one. Hope this helps. Regards

Thank you fo r this video!! where is Gigabye with this explanation??! Only sugestion I would make would be to take the labels off your SSD as they will act as a thermal insulator between the ICs and the thermal pad.
@warnacokelat3 жыл бұрын
Oh and one more thing that i found, it's better to cut a bit of the thermal pad so that it only sticks to the m.2 drive controller, not the NAND. The NAND on my drive is a bit taller than the controller, this makes my M.2 drive runs hot most of the time.

Question: Might an NVMe with a heat-sink stick out on the back-side or does it for sure?
@deanjallen64492 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the question. I think it would be best to just use the case NVMe heatsink. This attaches just to the front side so fits well. Just leave off the aluminium block for best drive temps. I didnt try a stand alone heatsink but I would think it may not fit. Regards

Hi, I have this same board but I installed the SSD in the back m2 slot and I have the OS on that one. I get many bsod at the startup tho, do you think that putting the SSD in this slot would solve anything? thanks
@deanjallen64493 жыл бұрын
I think its only the front slot that talks directly with the CPU so the front one would be best for speed so I would put this in the front slot first. It should still work though in the rear one. I would download the SSD software, update the SSD firmware to the latest. This will probably solve your problems. Also try turning off any fastboot settings in BIOS and also in windows. I think this will also help. If this doesn't work try making sure your RAM is running at the correct voltage. Also try slowing down the RAM speed and see if this works. Always only do one thing at a time though. Regards
@warnacokelat3 жыл бұрын
I can't believe I'm googling for how to screw in an M.2 drive lol. It would be better if you unscrew the nut with 5.5mm hex socket. Anyway I found that the 'heatsink' doesn't really do anything to help with the drive temperature especially in right hand sandwich style case where the M.2 drive sits on top. I took it off and stick 2 40mm fans instead.
@deanjallen64493 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thanks for the comments and I'm glad it was useful. I couldn't find a 5.5mm hex socket at the time...Installation of this drive was a little different to normal hence why I did the video. I suspect the heat-sink was more for show and best with airflow around drive instead. Not sure I like small fans though as they can be loud. Noctua do make some good ones though. I suspect you only really need them if pushing the drive hard. Regards

Really sorry you have had this problem, someone else here has also had the same issue. I think the threads are a bit too small for this and don't have enough strength for the application. Because of this you have to be very careful and only just nip it up. Hopefully it will not take too long to come back. The other person that this happened to drilled out the post but still needed a new nut.
