Finding and rb button for lcd is a knightmare I can't do this cause my rb button snapped clean in half and to get a new one I would have to buy a 3rd party set of buttons I don't need.

One thing that always amazes me about the Steam Deck is the community behind it. Everyone is eager to learn and help each other out, any issue i've encountered or any question I've had was answered with just a quick Google search, this time was no different. Amazing tutorial, although a bit lacking on the visuals at times, which is to be expected given how finnicky the process is at times. What was not seen though was well made up for with your detailed commentary. I had no trouble following along with this video even as a complete beginner, my first time taking apart any of my electronics - the extent of what i had done previously reaching only taking apart a mechanical keyboard. I wanna take a second to give some advice from my experience with fixing this for people who may run into the same problem. When you disconnect all the ribbons off of the button circuit board thingy, you can simply lift it off and move it to the side, without screwing around with the tiny white cable with the black and red wire (which i believe concerns the haptics for the touchpad). It's so difficult to remove and I couldn't even manage to do it, for me that proved tricker than the trigger hinges. You're better off just lifting the circuit board and putting it aside slightly so you can access what's underneath without risking tearing the cable or its black housing. Another thing is, the fix itself, I only managed to get it to a place I was happy by clipping off the end of a safety pin, bending it in a U shape and filing the pointy end and the "butt" of the U to get the desired height. The paper clip proved to be too thick for my situation, even if i did strip it a lot, bumper just felt super stiff. Reversing the steps was just as easy and I'm happy to say my bumper feels even better than when I first bought my second hand deck! Props to Lastability for the help and the idea and to iFixIt for their detailed written tear-apart guides. I love this community!

I ended up replacing the entire right bumper button on my SD about a year ago using my hot air station (you can use buttons designed for the Nintendo DS, as they are the exact same) because the button itself was faulty. Ironically, it ended up being a lot clickier and easier to press with the new one, to the point I was dissatisfied with how the factory left bumper felt, lol. However, over time I noticed it got harder and harder to press and after re-opening it recently, I noticed that the button itself has no support at the back (there is a sort of insert with the little plastic brace held onto the board with the three screws, but the insert for the button doesn't reach all the way), and the reason it became harder to press is because the button housing bent back slightly. Its held in with just the two solder anchors on its sides, so the metal at the back just bends. I 3D Printed a simple square to fill the gap between the button and the plastic and that seems to have helped. However, at this point I don't feel like replacing the button again because it now double-presses frequently, and I don't want to wait two months to receive replacement buttons from China again. I cant seem to find just the board to swap out. Anyone know of any reliable and trustworthy vendors that sell the entire right daughterboard?

🤣 plus the Japanese laws don't allow them to do such layoffs and it's against their philosophy as a company. They know, and have stated so that, layoffs are bad for morale which will cost them more in the long run. Not to mention they are without competition at this point.

Think of the prestige though! Being fired by Microsoft must look pretty good on your resume of companies you've been fired by 😎
@Lastability
@Lastability 3 ай бұрын
I know a lot of people who do just that. Work at a company they dislike for a while simply for the prestige of having the name on their resume. Studios on a resume are rarely enough to land you a job in the gaming industry though. Portfolio, released games you have worked on and mostly networking will do way more for you than having a shiny name on your resume. If you were a dev in the industry where or on which game would you want to work?

Great work. I had the opposite problem the first time I did this fix, the bumper was too stiff so I had to file the wire a bit. That caused it to have just the right travel space. Maybe you need a thicker wire for it to work properly. Since that first time I tried the feel of the trigger first before putting the unit back together.

Same thing happened to my deck and i permanently fixed it myself, it slowly pushes down with each click, you can open it, and slowly carefully push it back up with a dabstick and then you can even shove something under the switch with a pinch of glue and permanently fix it. I did this.. and i have not had to fix it again or have any issue.

Came back to say this helped me fix my issue a year back, I ended up wedging a piece of paper between the button and bumper after disassembly. Unfortunately a year on the buttons just started to become less responsive again and now im scared to take apart the steam deck and attempt another fix 😅

Glad you managed to fix it. Paper tends to move, that's why I went with the paperclip wire , cause you jam the part of the bumper in there and it doesn't have anywhere to go. As for another fix, you managed to do it once,second time will be easier. You got this.👍

When bumper buttons stop working, is it caused by a piece of that black button breaking off? My r1 started not working occasionally and after about an hour of pressing/testing it, it stopped working completely. It's also much more "squishier" I'd guess I'd say, compared to the other side. I'm wondering if a piece could have cracked and then broken off and this fails to make contact with whatever it's supposed to press. Would that be a typical problem with this piece? Kinda long-winded, sorry.
@Lastability
@Lastability 6 ай бұрын
It is not as much as a part of the bumper breaking of as it is wearing off. The more you use the bumper the more that plastic tip that presses the trigger behind the bumper button, wears off and the bumper stops reaching that switch unless you press it real hard. That's why we insert something there to compensate for that distance, so the bumper button can once more reach the switch when you press it. That said, I have seen cases where the bumper stopped working because the tip broke off ever so slightly, after the Deck was dropped or it was hit with force. Hope that clarifies things.

In my case, my right bumper also softened up as well, but I have a few questions: 1. Why do I need to remove the battery at all when I was able to just remove the joysticks as is before without needing to remove battery compared to my bumpers now? 2. To get things right, what exactly do I need to fix the bumpers first for tools? It seems tricky to do. 3. Can’t Valve or other companies just makes much more durable buttons? It seems pointless to have handheld device only for it to need maintenance every couple of months or so, which is a hazard if you’re new to repairs like I am.

Howdy! Alternative solution here. I took the plastic bumper out (real slowly and carefully) after only having unplugged the power and removing the trigger. I filed down the two tabs to the immediate sides of the plastic bit that interacts with the actual button (at 7:48 in vid) and put the tiniest dap of epoxy on the cross itself. Did a tiny bit of trial and error and sanded the epoxy till it was perfect. Maybe not better than paper clip but felt a lil less jank. Thanks for the video!

Good job. This is exactly what i wanted to see. 99% of the reviewers out there only show the 10 first minutes of games that are super resource intensive, which does not reflect the general performances we'll have to deal with when we're 30 hours in. So again, great job. Thank you.

Just wanted to say thank you so much! I had a non-responsive right bumper after having my steam deck for about a year (probably from playing so many games where you mash R1), and I followed your guide and fixed the issue almost entirely! I had to watch the follow QA video to know how to position the metal staple I was using instead, but everything went well after a few hours of disassembly and reassembly. Awesome vid :)
