I ended up replacing the entire right bumper button on my SD about a year ago using my hot air station (you can use buttons designed for the Nintendo DS, as they are the exact same) because the button itself was faulty. Ironically, it ended up being a lot clickier and easier to press with the new one, to the point I was dissatisfied with how the factory left bumper felt, lol. However, over time I noticed it got harder and harder to press and after re-opening it recently, I noticed that the button itself has no support at the back (there is a sort of insert with the little plastic brace held onto the board with the three screws, but the insert for the button doesn't reach all the way), and the reason it became harder to press is because the button housing bent back slightly. Its held in with just the two solder anchors on its sides, so the metal at the back just bends. I 3D Printed a simple square to fill the gap between the button and the plastic and that seems to have helped. However, at this point I don't feel like replacing the button again because it now double-presses frequently, and I don't want to wait two months to receive replacement buttons from China again. I cant seem to find just the board to swap out. Anyone know of any reliable and trustworthy vendors that sell the entire right daughterboard?

This kinda worked for me. It does click now, but the bumper still doesn't register unless I press it harder than usual. It's better than before though, thanks.

Great work. I had the opposite problem the first time I did this fix, the bumper was too stiff so I had to file the wire a bit. That caused it to have just the right travel space. Maybe you need a thicker wire for it to work properly. Since that first time I tried the feel of the trigger first before putting the unit back together.

Thanks to your explain i decided try to fix this mushy bumper but using cuted paper and place between switch and plastic button. First outcome was touchable bumper, placing a finger cause register button without click sound. To be honest that was pretty cool but i preffer feadback feel over touch button. Second teardown and finally resolve the problem, but trigger started feeling odd. it turned out i move a little that cover for bumper at cause this issue. That fix took me 3 attemps and 2h but now buttons feel great. It sad that still this problem occur. When i get steam deck it took less then week for mushy bumper. I hope less peopole will have problem with bumper buttons so all new SD owner could enjoy gaming without RMA or streesing when teardown. Great video btw.

It seems that parts of my previous video weren't clear enough to help you repair your deck. Apologies, recording such a guide was a first for me. Covid prevented me for releasing this one earlier but in this short video I try to explain how the most crucial part of the fix works. Let me know if you still have questions, I'll be more than happy to answer them.

Thank you very much for this video, Lastability. May I ask whether the probable cause of this bumper issue is from normal wear and tear? Do you think it will happen to a majority of Steam Decks out there or is this something that is more easily caused by rough handling or constant high pressure on the bumpers? I am extremerly gentle with my bumpers naturally and am wondering if even a very conservative use of the button may cause this issue. My goal is to make the Deck's original hardware last as long as possible. I was a Q2 2022 pre-order receiver of the Deck. Many thanks.

Mine stopped working after normal use. Not dropping or hitting it. I use it to play a couple of hours since it is not my main gaming machine as I mostly play on my PC, plus due to a heavy workload at the moment I can't play or make videos as much as I want. To answer your question if this may happen to the majority of Steam Decks out there. It seems that it is a pretty common issue, I can't give a percentage of the SDs that are affected by it. But, in the communities I am a part of it pops up pretty regularly. Also this video seems to be very popular which may suggest that it is not a a rare issue. If your goal is to make the Deck's original hardware last as long as possible you don't need to worry as this is not a hardware issue. As long as you don't dismantle your SD often and when you do you follow the proper precaution you should enjoy it for a long time. The only thing that will naturally degrade is the battery. Valve did an excellent job designing this device.

@@Lastability Plus, I just ordered the official replacement part I needed for $13 with shipping. If Valve keeps parts available for the foreseeable future, people willing to fix things themselves can do it without having to worry about whether an RMA will go in their favor. Also, I'm sure methods like what you demonstrate in the video also work well; it's definitely a console made to be repaired, to some extent.

metal conduct electricity.. thus this solution damage the board in the long run?
@Lastability
@Lastability 4 ай бұрын
There is no contact with the board, the metal just touches the rubber part of the trigger.

Hello thank you for this fix, but I have one problem with this is that it will damage the button in long term because its metal to plastic. We need to find a better material, imo its better to have sacrificial material being replace than the button itself.
@Lastability
@Lastability Жыл бұрын
If you mean that the paper clip metal will damage the plastic bumper button, it will not because the paper clip fits snugly and tight on to the button. Thus it does not move around in order to cause any wear and tear. If you mean that the paper clip will cause damage to the trigger (the mechanical part) itself, the same reason is valid here as well. Also the tip of the paper clip presses on the rubber part of the trigger just like the button does. I've tried other solutions before ending up here and most of them either dislocated after a few play sessions which led to opening up the device again and again, which in and on itself will eventually cause more harm. Adhesives are out of the question since the may end up breaking the trigger itself if not applied correctly or corrode the plastic. That said, if you find that using a paper clip or a metal wire will cause issues, please by all means share it we us and I will include it in a future video about the fix. After all this time my Deck's bumpers still work perfect.

I will do that. I will update my comment if i find a better material which is also accessible to most of the people.

@@Lastability hello. I've check my local online shopping here, I saw that we could try to use silicon blanking cap with the right size to snuggly fit into and avoid glueing. Excess material can be cut by utility knife. Lastly I could not verify this fix atm because I'm still onboard a ship and no access to steam deck. I appreciate your understanding.

the paper cliup needs to be thin if your having problems finding a thin paper clip i found that the wire that is in the Twisy ties for trashbags also works. Thanks for the guide. for people wondering about having to replace that button you'll have to replace it anyways soon or later cause the problem comes from a very shoddy job on the solidering of that button. it's too far back. it seems they must have knew this cause they put that black piece in an attempt to reinforce it.

Is it safe to put cardboard over the button

I folded some high temp rated electrical tape, put it between the trigger and button, folded the tape over, and used more folded tape (sticky side out this time) to stick on the plastic square underneath the button. Its been registering properly and quickly all day.

It is safe. But the problem is that you have to somehow keep it in place. When I tried it, it moved after some play sessions, due to vibrations during gaming.
