The blues is still alive in the Mississippi Delta. You can't go wrong in Clarksdale. Plenty of people keeping the tradition alive and also plenty evolving it and making it their own.

The Blues! The Canned Heat brought me to the blues! Thank the good lord, God Bless em, I would maybe have made my way, but they sped up my journey! Found a America Heritage long ago somewhere with Memphis Slim, T-Bone Walker, Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee, John Lee Hooker, and Shakey Jake. This is also were i found out about Willie Dixon! can't wait for part 2! Thanks! Lets do it! Boom Boom Boom!

I was very much impressed with your video Robert. Especially the time you spent on Robert Johnson and the other artists, deeper as it were. I been a blues fan for over 60 years. Sure I'm a rocker but I love the blues. Seen most of the greats in the 60s and 70s. The Wolf's my fav. He sat with me one time while his band warmed up the crowd. We talked blues of course and it was only for 8 or 9 minutes but those minutes are etched in my mind for all time. His voice epitomizes the blues for me... SRV Live at the El Macambo is my fav live album by him. I'm a homer. LOL... I've a couple of Big Joe's albums. Got a part two coming up too huh? I'll be tuning in to that video too Robert. Later Gator....

Nice video and a favorite genre of mine Robert! Great choices. Seems the blues wax and wane in popularity. Right now it is an often ignored music. Like many, Clapton and the Beano album was my entry point. But I love many blues artist. Charlie Patton, Tommy Johnson, Lightnin and my favorite acoustic player Mississippi John Hurt. I wanted so badly to learn how to do that acoustic Delta and Piedmont picking style and achieved sloppy at best lol. I just picked up what I think is one of the best late 70s blues albums, Albert Collins “Ice Pickin’” great stuff. Good thing is if your a blues fan alot of it can be had for fair and cheap prices. All those Real Folk Blues are great. Willie Dixon I believe is a Real Folk Blues and I think they did a harmonica series also. Early second blue label Chess reissues are very good sounding and usually in mono. On Robert Johnson, I have for years been singing the praises of the restoration job they did with the King Of The Delta Blues material. With all the remixes, remasterings blah blah blah of reissues imo the restoration job they did with the Johnson stuff is the best improvements of any of them. Seriously, if you haven’t heard how much they brought the music from the crackly ghostly sound to nearly in the same room with you I highly suggest it. I know, that sounds like hyperbole but I aint kiddin’, its that much of an improvement. And it can be had for like 5 bucks or so as a used cd. Its called “Robert Johnson The Centennial Collection” from 2011 Sony Legacy. I still enjoy the certain old timey sound of the old boxset but I think this Centennial is crazy good as far as the improved fidelity. Cool video! Look forward to part 2 😎

This takes me back. I already had that earlier Robert Johnson album (and a second one too) when that new RJ box set dropped. The better sound was a revelation. Also have had those Real Folk Blues albums for over 35 years - so good. If you don't have it, find Howlin Wolf - Moanin in the Moonlight. Thanks, great finds. PS - Taj Mahal's next record, Giant Step, is my favorite of his. It kills! File under M. PPS - JLH redid I Cover The Waterfront with Van Morrison in the early 90s, and it's worth hearing.

Funny you mentioned Taj Mahal and filing it, that is a quandary that I have had, I went for M. I bought that Johnson box set due to Rolling Stone also, it sounded like it was the greatest box set ever made. I was into Chicago Blues but this was my introduction to delta blues. My first thought was, what the hell is this? I now own the vinyl version of it and love it. Biggest issue with blues albums it they rerelease them so often in different covers, pretty incredible. Hound Dog Taylor and Elmer James are my favorite but I am a huge fan of the genre

Yes, here in California it’s called Carl’s Jr. Robert Johnson is an artist I’ve only heard a little bit of, but I just don’t see him in the wild ever. I really enjoy Howlin’ Wolf. The first time I bought some of his stuff, was when I went music shopping on my birthday. As I am checking out the HW album in the store people are coming into the store wanting to buy Black Star by Bowie. I found out that he had died that day, on my birthday. Later when listening to the Howlin’ Wolf, I was doing some research on him and discovered that he also died on the day I celebrate my birthday. I wonder if the grim reaper was trying to tell me something.

Hello, Robert. I was also puzzled as to where to put Taj Mahal on the shelf. I have music reference books so I looked in those but one book has him listed under T and another has him listed under M. So, they don't know either.

Hardee’s. Brings back my college days in Auburn. Wife worked there. I would take Her to work at 5:30. Go back to our trailer ( yes I was trailer park trash). Get ready Return and park at Hardee’s and walk across to my classes. She would pick up after School. Those charbroiled burgers were great. My record collection didn’t really Get started till after grad school 7 years later. I buy more records at one time than I owned all of my youth days. The real blues and jazz are lacking in my collection

We had Hardee's in Salt Lake in the 90's. I got an mp3 version of those Robert Johnson songs but they're sort of hard to listen to. Love the Rolling Stones covers, like "Love in Vain" etc. Albert King's "Born Under a Bad Sign" is maybe my favorite blues album. I need to check out Taj Mahal.

Hi Robert, a useful guide - thanks for the vid. Some great call-outs here. An excellent acoustic blues album I can heartily recommend is J. B. Lenoir's 'Down In Mississippi.' Recorded beautifully in the '66 - voice, one guitar, fingerbells! An absolute must. It's hard to track down (sepia sleeve) and is sister album to the slightly inferior 'Alabama Blues' on the same re-release label. (A+E?.. Can't quite recall what they're called.) Anyway, it's astonishingly good.

That's the best Taj Mahal album IMO... She Caught the Katy is amazing... how about Junior Wells Hoodoo Man Blues? My favorite blues album...

The Canned Heat and Hooker record is HIGHLY recommended.

Hi Robert The Muddy Waters and Sonny Boy Williamson folk Blues albums are more like the Howlin Wolf album collections of singles Both great. Chess wanted to attract fans of folk music to buy blues records that's why the title. There were part twos of some of them.

So ... Jethro Tull was an agriculturist born in 1674 England. In a library I guess you would find his books under T for Tull. On the other hand the band Jethro Tull would go under J i an alphabetized record collection. However Taj Mahal is an assumed name of the person/artist. If he changed his name officially from Henry St. Clair Fredericks to Taj Mahal, and that name was on his drivers license, he should go under M. But ... Shit, I'm confused now. Why can't we have perfect order in everything? Why does it have to be like this? I'm going to bed.

I would file Taj Mahal under... T
