I'd borrow stuff from civ 6: It would be fun to add a nation spesific ability or pool of units that all soldiers of a nation has. For example all blue moon units having the olaf rain debuff but extra defence or smthg. Also they could have unique units or maybe some units are unavailable to them. When countries ally against common foe, picking an army in addition to a co for a mission would be good mix and matching. Ofc this would be hard to balance for comps since players would find best combinations real quick, but this has some appeal to mad scientists like myself.

For me, I got into Fire Emblem seeing someone play three houses on an early copy, went out and bought whatever fire emblem game the local game stop had which happened to be birthright, which got me really into the series. I loved playing the fates games, loved playing three houses and three hopes, and then I got engage. I played for an hour the day it came out, and got bored. It took me about six months before I felt like I wanted to play it again. I don’t like the world that much and think the story has some good ideas that were not executed well (literally I just like Alear’s story and the differences between fell dragons and divine dragons that were sort of explored). Now if I want to play a fire emblem game, I play engage for the gameplay or three hopes for my Fódlan fix. I can’t really talk about the older games since I haven’t played anything besides these and awakening. Will also add that I really liked some of the characters from Engage, specifically Pandreo, Rosado, and Kagetsu as my favorites.
