Historical revision detected.How do you convince yourself that the West Saxons are of Belgae origin? The only source for this hypothesis is the possible Celtic origin of the name Cerdic.Then these scholars making up the peaceful assimilation and integration between saxons and celts,which is clearly a political trending of creating a cultural identity as we known British,with common heritage and ancestors.However the happened reality was not that peaceful and family-friendly,the population replacement was very common and it still is in Levant.

Another question. During the Roman occupation did Belgae marry with Romans or did they protect their blood?

We can assume some did as Romans would retire to farm life and often marry Celts.

I guess you are dealing with the taking of the Saxon Shore fortress of Anderida. It is indeed quite likely that it was contested. There is a novel that you would enjoy. The Conscience of the King, by Alfred Duggan. Published in the 1950s, I think. ( The king is Aelle)

There is a problem here. Even with Roman Roads, trade to other areas of Britain did not go through Kent. Trade with the Continent was by sea transport. And The Anglo-Saxon invasions did not all pass through Kent. The invaders landed by sea in the other areas.

Hey, I recently heard from a source that because of a famine in Germanic areas, the angles and jutes came to settle which led to the Britons asking for the Saxons to come (horsa and hengist). Is this true?
@TheSwanShowMain
@TheSwanShowMain 11 күн бұрын
It's commonly speculated that the reason the Germanics were so eager to move to Britain was because their own land, modern Denmark, had become unfarmable. But the reason Hengist and Horsa went over to Britain was because king Vortigern of Britain asked them, and he asked them because Picts and Scots from modern Scotland were attacking the Britons down below i.e. the people who were citizens of Britannia which had by then collapsed.

A bit difficult- he's dead. And his theories on the genetic make-up of Britain have largely been discredited. For a start, he claimed that the population was pretty much defended from Cro- Magnon hunter gatherers, whereas current evidence suggests a 90 % replacement by steppe-descended Bell Beaker folk in the early Bronze Age. He also severely underestimated the Anglo-Saxon (including Jutes) element in the modern English population.

I'm interested in that. My name is very common in Essex and my family can trace its roots back to the C16th as tenant farmers there. Yet, there is almost no foreign DNA in me, 96% British/Irish, weeny bit of Spanish/Norse (from the Irish side I guess) and a little over 2.5% Neanderthal. I figured we weren't quitters and just stayed put to farm in our lovely valley not far from Chelmsford and just let the Romans, Angles, Saxons and Normans rule over us. 🤔

Question. Were the West Saxons more Saxon than Belgic or more Belgic than Saxon?
@TheSwanShowMain

Belgae were a celt-germanic mix from continental Europe who moved over to Britain. The Germanic part wasn't Saxon, as Saxon is a specific sub-group of Germanic.

This AI art are some of the better ones I have seen, especially the ones that look like illustrations by Hal Foster. As how I see it, the Jutes who came had to make do with what they have as they were no match for the more numerous Saxons who were coming in droves. The Jutes and the remaining Briton peasantry made Kent a prosperous land, which continued when they were subsumed into Wessex and into Norman times.

The south saxons were basically just a backwater after 491. There is absolutely no evidence they ever exerted any influence beyond their own borders. To the west they seem to have been hemmed in by the Jutish nation (see Bede) until Wulfhere of Mercia invaded Meonwara in 661, and then they fell under West Saxon suzerainty after Caedwalla's invasion in 686.

@@TheSwanShowMain the A/S chron doesn't even mention the south saxons again until 607, and that is conflict with the Gewisse (West Saxons) who would have been more or less on their borders at the time. The next mention is in 661 in connection with the Mercian invasion of Meonwara and IOW, then 686 an invasion by Caedwalla. Nothing to suggest that they were capable of operating outside there own isolated kingdom. We know, from Bede that the Jutes of South Hampshire remained independent through until at least 607, but probably 661. I have read Myers, and he seems out of step with more modern scholars such as Barbara Yorke, or even Thomas Williams. Interesting subject though. I may not always agree with you videos, but I always enjoy them 😁👍

@@TheSwanShowMain oh, one more thing occurs to me. Caedwalla invaded in 685 and killed King Athelwealh with just his own personal retinue as he wasn't king until the following year. This does not suggest that Athelwealh was capable of quickly raising any significant armed response. Not indicative of a significant kingdom.

I prefer the theory that the West Saxon dynasty Cerdic, Cynric & Ceawlin were actually a Briton dynasty Caradoc, Cunorix & Colin which conquered the Jutes of Hampshire/Isle-of-Wight sometime after the Battle of Mt.Badon (AD.497) up until Colin/Ceawlin was driven from his kingdom by the Saxon Ceolric (son of Cuthwine) after the battle of Wodens barrow (Adams Grave - Alton Priors) as recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in AD.591. With later Saxon Chroniclers mis-identifying the former Briton rulers as Saxon and Anglo-Saxon-ising their names as well as confusing their dates. I like to think Gildas the Wise was writing his history in AD.542 - 44 years & 1 month after the battle of Mt.Badon which in turn was 44 years after Ambrosius Aurilianus led the Romano-British fight back against the Jutish warlord Hengest.
