The south saxons were basically just a backwater after 491. There is absolutely no evidence they ever exerted any influence beyond their own borders. To the west they seem to have been hemmed in by the Jutish nation (see Bede) until Wulfhere of Mercia invaded Meonwara in 661, and then they fell under West Saxon suzerainty after Caedwalla's invasion in 686.

I prefer the theory that the West Saxon dynasty Cerdic, Cynric & Ceawlin were actually a Briton dynasty Caradoc, Cunorix & Colin which conquered the Jutes of Hampshire/Isle-of-Wight sometime after the Battle of Mt.Badon (AD.497) up until Colin/Ceawlin was driven from his kingdom by the Saxon Ceolric (son of Cuthwine) after the battle of Wodens barrow (Adams Grave - Alton Priors) as recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in AD.591.
