Hvala! The short version of my background: born & raised in Utica, NY in the US, my family’s been in the US for generations. Utica has thousands of Bosnians so that’s how I became interested in the culture and language. I want to make a video soon explaining a bit about me and the story of how I learned the language & started traveling in the Balkans. Pozdrav!

Sarajevo was never under siege, but was an ethnically divided city. Thanks to the Anglo-Saxons, after the ethnic cleansing of the Serbs, today's Sarajevo is a mono-ethnic Muslim city. Enjoy what you have achieved.

This video is definitely made look Zenica much worse than it is. City is normal and nice and there is a huge park and nice streets with social life and full coffee shops. For some reason this guy wants to make Zenica look bad.

Not at all, I wanted to explore the zeljezara bc I heard a lot about it, but other than that the city was really pretty. I showed the park in this video and mentioned the green space, next to both the Bosna and the Babina (I especially liked that part, in crkvice). I didn’t show the old town in this video but it was also quite nice. I’d love to come back in summer, too. Sorry if I didn’t give that impression enough in this vid, but it really surpassed my expectations, especially after the things people told me about the city

Several people both tourists and Bosnians (not from zenica of course) told me it wasn’t a nice city, was really polluted, etc. As you see in the video tho it was overblown, I really enjoyed the city. A ton of green space by both rivers, plus the carsija was really nice

Yes, no income tax or sales tax, but the property tax that almost completely pays for education is outrageously high and if you want to make your house better, the property tax goes up higher. I loved living in NH for 30 years and raising kids in NH, but please don't tell people that the population is diverse. He did mention that 95% of the people are white and then went on to say it was diverse because some people speak French...not diverse really.

Regarding the beer. Indeed the Federation and the Republika Srpska have different beer brands: A few months ago I made the mistake to task for Niksicko beer (a Montenegrin beer) in a café in central Sarajevo. In the Republika Srpska you will find it regularly, here the waiter gave a mini lecture of the downfall of Yugoslavia etc.

I am from the suburbs of Sarajevo and it is indescribable to say what this city survived from the Chetnik terror. My family members were part of the defenders of the city in the ranks of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and through their experiences I can only say that the war in Bosnia was certainly the worst war that happened in modern times. A large number of Serbs who were pre-war residents of Sarajevo did not want to join the aggressor Serbian army, but joined the defenders of the city in the ranks of the Army. And yes, before the war, Lukavica was an ordinary village next to Sarajevo, after the war, when that area was attached to the Republika Srpska, the Serbian government invested huge money to make that part an urban zone so that they could declare it a city out of sheer revolt. Serbs are still suffering to this day because Sarajevo defended itself and because Bosniaks make up 90% of the population in that city today.

Yes you make good points. As I said to another commenter, I didn’t mean to imply that they are or should be two separate countries. I only wanted to point out the several distinct differences that appear as soon as the ‘border’ (I don’t mean border as in international border, but like the border of two states in the US). E.g. more Cyrillic, buses to Belgrade, orthodox churches, Serbian beers, Serbian flags, etc.

According to the Law on Ministries and Other Administrative Bodies, Bosnia and Herzegovina has nine ministries, namely: - Ministry of Foreign Affairs, - Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations, - Ministry of Civil Affairs, - Ministry of Finance and Treasury, - Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees, - Ministry of Justice, - Ministry of Communications and Transport, - Ministry of Security, - Ministry of Defense. The Presidency of BiH appoints the President of the Council of Ministers, who takes office after the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH confirms his appointment. The President proposes the names of candidates for ministers, and the House of Representatives appoints them. Judiciary The judiciary in Bosnia and Herzegovina consists of: Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Food, water and humanitarian supplies during Sarajevo Siege: - During intensive, first period of siege from July 1992 to May 1993 average single citizen had received 39 220 grams of humanitarian food (av. 100 grams per day). - Major supplies of food and weaponry were imported from free territory through secret "Tunnel of hope" constructed in 1993. - Citizens were not supplied with daily bread from humanitarian convoys but entirely from local KLAS factory from their massive 35tons of wheat reserve supplies. Factory was massively bombarded on 18th october 1992 destroying wheat mill and some of import machines, and after managing production, it was bombarded again on 17th february 1993 in UNPROFOR presence. - Water sources out of the city were cut as well. But thanks to Sarajevo Brewery (built by Vienna industrial Heinrich Lewy in 1881) and their internal 300m deep water-well source, water was distributed and supplyed around 100 000 of citizens. In 15th January 1993 single grenade killed my neighbour along wiht other 8 citizens (2 children) and injured 23 that were waiting their water in front of Sarajevo Brewery on Bistrik. Many people died also from snipers in other water distribution locations. - Humanitarian support form West was mostly consisted of pre-Vietnamese war lunch packages and suspicious IKAR cans from which cats oftenly died. - From average 10 trucks of proper humanitarian support (Merhamet - Muslim charity foundation) 8 were captured by Croat and Serb smugglers in order to allow 2 trucks to pass to Bosnian free territory.

There was Yugoslavian in-depth study in 1984. in which 50 most known (serb) officers analysed for 3 years - How long can single city withstand siege? and by some "coincidence" chosen city was Sarajevo... They took in consideration everything from : water sources, electricity, gas, food supplies, road infrastructure etc., and they stated that Sarajevo can withstand 75 days of siege. Despite that, Sarajevo survived 1425 days and all Bosnians still managed to start defence with improvised weaponry and defend (despite embargo) against 4th strongest Yugoslavian (proserbian) army in Europe.

3:28 shows the municipality of Sokolac in the map, and it is a part of the City of East Sarajevo (if we can call it a city, tbh), but before the war, that municipality was not a part of the pre-war City of Sarajevo. It was just an independent municipality next to the City of Sarajevo. It was incorporated into the City of East Sarajevo between 1996 and 1999.

Of course there were Bosnians/Serbs who moved to Istanbul or Anatolia for various reasons during Ottoman times but the first wave of migration from Bosnia to Turkey took place after the annexation of Bosnia & Herzegovina by the Austria Hungarian Empire towards the end of 19th century. My father side also came in that wave from Mostar and settled in a Bosnian village near Izmir. They must have feared a war or a lot of violence would happen, otherwise they would not leave their ancestors lands. You can find large Bosnian populations in in towns like Istanbul, Sakarya, Izmir, Bursa Canakkale etc, basically European part of Turkey and Western/North Western Turkey. It is estimated that at least 1 million people in Turkey have Bosnian origin.

when was it part of Albania and when was Albania created? No disrespect to Albania but some Albanian clans that moved upward and eventually became Bosniaks (some Bosniaks, Turks, Montenegrins etc etc also became Albanians I know this for a fact as my ancestors were responsible for settling people from Anatolia into that region during Ottoman Empire and in fact some of the families of same origin due to creation of Albania Montenegro border became different people just the last nam slightly changed often I letter was added to last nam min Albania and ic in Montenegro (seeking here from experience as my family was of Turkish background some that stayed after collapse of empire and in MNE some added evic to last name I Albania I and for some time few family members knew of this and used to visit albania secretly over the border to visit family members but over time became harder and each side (most anyway) forgot to speak Turkish and became todays bosniaks and on the other side Albanians. Anyway don't want to make further confusion as that area already has too much confusion haha. I still consider my self Turk but for simplicity identify as Bosniak
