Very impressive video. I watched a few months back and never got round to leaving a comment! Dave was fantastic with his knowledge and passion. I do miss the class 43s and the roar of the 91s but i like these Hitachi trains, their acceleration is excellent and their versatility to bring intercity/high speed services on non electrified stations to towns such as Hull is a positive things in my eyes.

Impressive how this speed of 125mph is maintained on Victorian-era routing, and that there's an upgrade to 140 in the works. As much as I bash UK rail for it's shortcomings, you have to commend the 19th century engineers who built this, and the following generations who maintained and upgraded this stuff to support speeds currently sustained today.
@doncoffey582014 сағат бұрын
Yes, that service ran to time a treat. Like you say a good proportion at 125mph.

As a kid we used to "explore" the lines around Hazel Grove and later in life I used the service mainly from Manchester to Hazel Grove, but sometimes all the way to Buxton, so I was surprised the train didn't stop at every station. Is this a fairly new development or has it always skipped some stations?

Having worked that branch when it had 2 tracks which reduced the risk of being held on the main line either way, wouldn’t it make ultimate sense during the present upgrade, to close this very neglected’ branch with its very acute curve and sand drag and use Mirfield Stn as a passenger stop and change ends. Obviously it would be a problem for chartered specials, but regular services.? Thanks Don great video memories flooding back. Barry

a question what does a freight train driver do when mother nature calls when he needs a wee does he just litterally urinate in to a a plastic bottle?
@doncoffey58208 күн бұрын
It’s a common question. They basically plan ahead but they sometimes take advantage of a stop at a signal if it’s out of sight or they can retreat to the engine room with a container etc.

Thanks for the cab ride. My 2nd cousin 4x removed George James Crosby Dawson was Chief Engineer of the North Staffordshire Railway from 1886-1914. He would have travelled the same route on his work in the area as he worked in the main engineering shop at Stoke and lived at Newcastle under Lyme.

If i had a £1 for every EMR service i'd signalled, pffft, 4-1-4 Bells through Hazel Grove/Stockport for a class 1, 2-2-1-3 for an ECS to from Notts/ Lime St, 4 Bells & 2-2-1 Up the Valley. Great ride, very smooth without any hitches, bar the atmospheric conditions ?

Enjoyed seeing this Don, as I never worked a train round that spur between Bradley Jn and Bradley Wood Jn. Another bit that's always intrigued me, that I never got to drive over is that spur between Greetland Jn and Dryclough Jn. I seem to remember hearing that it was a bank engine section back in the day, which wouldn't surprise me, given the climb from Milner Royd Jn towards Halifax. Does that bit of line still exist, and if so, have you any footage of it? Keep up the great vids!

You wrote of the early signalling about the 40min mark. In those days the railways were little more than a slaughter house for railwaymen as being on duty for eighteen hours or more and with the unreliable engines then used where oiling would take place on the move. With the driver oiling his side and fireman doing the same and neither of them were looking at the road ahead of them. As for the rain well it wouldn't be summer without a summer shower. I saw an old Railscene cab ride from St Pancras to Sheffield on an HST with the narrator saying "as usual the weather was fowl giving rise to various lighting conditions". If you like a green country then you have to put up with the rain for there's no choice. If you want a parched countryside then come to Australia.
@doncoffey582026 күн бұрын
Yes, it was certainly a risky business in the early days. I wouldn’t swap our weather for yours but it doesn’t make good videos.

Dear Don Coffey! Getting more än more older and getting more and more less mobile I watch films with locos and railways from all over the world, and they give me great pleasure, reminding me a bit of my former life as a long range lorry/truckdriver. Being colourblind I couldnt be a locodriver, my very firtst choise. I just want to say: Thank You, Don! Your videos are in Every way the very Best, they have Everything: Especially they are from the very "birthland of the railways" and to see the fantastic work the old craftsmen and enginers and "Navvis" ! were able to do at that time! Its fantastic! Plese go on with your filming. And more of Class 66, my favorurites, ithey reminds me in many ways of my youth in big machins. Good luck! (My enthusiasm is greater than my English, sorry about that.)

That was a really excellent and informative video. Travelled to/from college several times in the early 1970's. Routing was West Allerton - Crewe - Derby - Loughborough. It was quite the trek, not for the faint hearted. That drop of water reminded me of Rover, the large white ball that kept Number 6 (Patrick McGoohan) from escaping from "The Village" in the wonderfully surreal TV series "The Prisoner" from the late 1960's. I also noted that the horn was used more frequently and far more loudly when the water droplet was on the windshield. Didn't seem to intimidate the water droplet however. 🤣
@doncoffey582028 күн бұрын
That drop of water! We often get them but we can’t always see them if they are right in front of the camera. They usually dry up after a while but that one seemed settled!

There is plans to reopen parts of the branch out of Stoke, as far as Leek but only time will tell if that does materialise. The Goods Loop at Stoke does see regular use from Colas Land Recovery Trains put of Stoke too!

Thanks for another interesting vid Don. Although it's a line I've never worked over, it brought back memories from doing the MP12 driver training course. One of the training modules was about learning how to learn a route properly. For some reason it had to be a route you were totally unfamiliar with, and I ended up having to do Crewe to Stoke-on-Trent. At the end of that part of the course you had to produce a map showing all the signals, speed boards, bridges, crossings etc. It was the winter of 1981 and it was bitterly cold with lots of deep snow, and I distinctly remember walking round the sidings at Grange Junction, Shelton etc (which were quite extensive at the time), trying to dig snow away from the ground signals to be able to see their numbers! Happy days, although I probably didn't think so at the time!
@doncoffey582028 күн бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. I’m a bit later than you, joining in 2003 at the age of 45. I was given Stockport to Greenbank for my route learning map then I think I had to do Stockport to Buxton for my final pass out. I’m 65 now and while I enjoy it so much I’ll keep doing it.
