It could be the notorious "Canon Cough". This often sounds like a wheezing sound when the shutter is fired and means the camera has not been properly maintained. Just like a car or any other piece of technology from 50 years ago, cameras require regular maintenance to continue working normally. Ours sounds normal because we service all the AE-1 and AE-1 Programs that we sell. (-: - Connor

I totally agree with you. There's not a word about the picture quality in this review and according to other ones (very few) I guess this camera is worth the money. And what if a beginner, with is new and lonely camera, really fell in love with photography and wanted to print ? Should he buy something else and pay again ? Why would people be stuck in one category ? But let's keep calm. I this channel is mainly market oriented and thinks this way. This said, I think they miss a large range of potential consumers who aren'y only waiting for the next "pro" camera that they "deserve".

how does Pentax think, that people will finish their pictures? (scan, photolab, ...) what do you think or recommned? thank you

I would say the target audience is most likely bringing their film to a lab for developing and scanning, or perhaps just having the film developed and then scanning at home. We don't have any official statement from them about this (as far as I know) but that's my general feeling. Thanks for watching! - Connor

I mostly shoot digital but am old enough to have started with film in the 90's. I have a couple of old ish 90's Canon EOS SLRs and I agree about the worry about reliability. Like you say, I feel each day they still work is a blessing and would love to have a new affordable film SLR camera that I didn't have that reliability worry. Hats off to Pentax for making this camera and i keep my fingers crossed that they someday, make a full frame SLR!

I wouldn't be surprised if we got there eventually! Pentax has stated they intend to make more film cameras as long as there is interest and as long as sales are good. Based on early sales of the 17, things are looking good for more film cameras from Pentax! Thanks for watching! - Connor

Shame on you. This is not acceptable. One must be blind to look at film photos nowadays. You want a film look, just apply countless filters to digital processing of RAW data. “ film community” I have not enough words of disapproval for your consumeristic hedonistic approach to global resources. You want all this chemical dirt back? What for? For your wasteful pleasure of getting one good frame per film? Which you will then scan anyway to treat in your PC? Do you know how much unnecessary chemical waste you produce. No? Ask AI. “Film community” you must be out of your minds . Stop consumeristic wastefulness.

I've had a few issues with vintage film cameras, and yeah, it sucks. For this reason, and many more, I'm so excited to see new film cameras being released. I'm happy to hear that a lot of stores sold out of their pre-order stock. Pentax did say they were designing multiple cameras. Maybe a future model will be a better fit for people who weren't into the Pentax 17.

It blocks light from entering the viewfinder. This can be useful for long exposures especially, where it's theoretically possible for light to enter the camera through the finder and reach the film. It's a pretty advanced feature, so we didn't cover it here. Thanks for watching! - Connor

Overhyped and overpriced. $500 for a film camera is outrageous.
@nenemydog13 күн бұрын
hehe wait till you see a leica. But in all fairness I don't think it's overpriced. There is a huge amount of cost for getting serial production started. combine this with the fact that this is a niche product that very likely won't be selling high numbers compared to other products. High production cost + low quantities = high price.

I'm a proud owner of an original Pen FV. If someone was starting out in film, the Pentax 17 is a better option. There are a lot of Pen F's, FT's and FV's out there. THe FT's are really expensive as they have a light meter, but have a dimmer viewfinder, and are more prone to mirror corrosion. The F and FVs are cheaper, but lenses aren't cheap, and *a lot* of this gear is not in great condition. The lenses are expensive, and again, not all in great condition (there's a 70mm that I would love, but it well over £1k). In the UK there's one place I know of that does a CLA (I have mine with them right now), but you need to add another £100 to the price. So maybe you can get a good Pen F or FV for a similar price, with a CLA added in, but that's full manual (even with external meter), and you're going to have to keep it maintained.

I need a shutter speed dial, an aperture ring, and an ISO dial, a flash sync port and manual focus. I don't need auto modes or built in flash. It looks like they've tried to simplify the camera by making it more complicated, I like everything else, but the user interface is no good for me. It's a pity because I really wanted to like the camera, but I don't.

I bought my Olympus Mju-II (aka Stylus Epic) back in 2001, I think. Price then was around ninety pounds. The Mju has autofocus but fewer controls than the 17 and also was full frame. If the 17 had existed then, it might have been more of a modernised Olympus Trip 35 (also full frame). 25 years later, prices will have risen, so the price now isn't unreasonable but it's more, proportionally, than I feel I paid for the Mju. At the time, the Mju seemed surprisingly expensive - you could buy compact cameras with zooms for less. I don't want/need a film camera, but good luck, Pentax.
@erichstocker835813 күн бұрын
More expensive than my used Leica SL2 including a CLA with conversion to S76 battery. My EOS 5(A2E) cheaper yet. So, it isn't clear that it is a useful film camera except maybe to wealthy beginners.

Should clarify that I meant Leicaflex SL2 film camera not the new digital camera.

I own many film SLR and I'm planning to buy one I want film to thrive. We need new cameras with warranty and service in the market. A few days ago I had to cannibalize one Minolta XE-7 to keep the other one running. The XE will be 50 years old this year, I'm pretty sure no one at Minolta thought that camera was going to last 50 years.

Nice discussion. I'm an old-timer - grew up with TLRs. I have a ton of digital and film cameras, 35mm and 120. I'll probably get one of the 17s out of curiosity - never had a 35mm half frame - and working with the vertical format. Meanwhile I've ordered a Ricoh Caddy to see if the 17 is something I'll want to pursue. BTW - no one ever mentions that processing/scanning half-frame costs more than full frame.
@coastalartistlivingonislan839512 күн бұрын
Yes it cost extra but still cheaper than paying forb2 rolls dev and scanned. And saves on postage since you are sending less rolls each time. Or the same amount of rolls but getting double the images. If you are of the scan and post on social or marketing small zines I think this could be a way to save some money over the long haul. I still love my TLR and square but I can see this camera being fun! Easier to focus with old age eyes and vision loss. Just set the lens to zine.
@Kamerastore3 күн бұрын
Processing half-frame doesn't cost more everywhere, it depends quite a lot on where you go. It's the same price at the lab we go to (Carmencita Film Lab in Spain) and other local labs. That's at least why we didn't mention it here. Thanks for watching! - Connor

Very true! And we're losing cameras/mechanics every day. Especially electronic cameras. Even with training, lack of spare parts or necessary initialization software makes repairing some cameras damn-near impossible.
