Your installation was very well done and gives new pool owners details that most pool stores fail to provide. But New York is not alone in it's over regulated requirements. Many States leave it up to homeowners insurance policies to set safety standards. My State is governed by local municipalities, and not the States heavy handed regulations. Just as there are States Rights we have local jurisdiction to enforce our own electrical and plumbing standards.

Can you explain to me why we only bond 4 posts and not all of them around the whole pool? Is the plug in receptacle with the insulated ground running back to the panel the only ground required? Thanks

Back in 2011 when I put in the pool I followed code and inspector expectations at the time. It may have changed since then. The ground wire and ground fault are at the panel.

So im assuming your pump was hard wired? I have bought one of those intex pools and have a dedicated 20 amp gfi at the breaker circuit. I have ran UF wire to and outdoor outlet for the pool pump to plug into. Do I still have to run the copper around the pool as well?
@WldBear3 жыл бұрын
I have a pedestal with a specific twist lock plug as required by code (2010) in NYS. The copper wire around the pool is to bond the soil, pool, and water. Bonding is different than grounding. It's up to your local code if it is required.

The idea is to connect the pool wall, so if the pillars are resin, or are insulated from the pool wall, then it defeats the purpose. I would think you'd want to connect the base or lip in 4 places. Your electrical inspector is the best source for answers of what they want to see.

Does NY state require that the wiring exit the house be at a point right beside the circuit breaker box, or is there an acceptable distance?

Not breaking balls because I know the deal. Some of the code makes no sense like bonding a window frame if it’s within 5ft of the pool. A window frame has zero potential why would you introduce it into the electrical system. But that’s stuff for another day. NEC code says you can’t use sheet metal screws to attach the lugs. I know I know but it’s in art 250 As an electrical contractor Ive been pulling my hair out for 35 yrs trying to plz the NEC. Which adds new twists and turns every year. You seem like a good guy you can use a thread lock on those sheet metal screws to keep them tight and replace them every couple of years. Bonding the frame is important.

What do you do about other things that use electric such as bottom cleaners and saltwater chlorine generators, where do you plug them in 10 - 20 feet away?
@WldBear6 жыл бұрын
Since making the video I switched to salt. My pump plugs into the salt generator, and then the generator plugs into the outlet. If that isn't your setup you will need to use the auxiliary plug 10-20 feet away. The safe bet is to ask the electric inspector what he/she wants to see.

@WldBear6 жыл бұрын
You're referring to the 3 single strand wires in the conduit? Those are 12 gauge. See previous comments.
@aliciar74476 жыл бұрын
So the pool store told me that when you have steel pool walls and resin pillars the only place you can bond the pool is at the seem where you connect the wall with bolts. He said to run the copper wire from the seem around the pool and back.. and to the motor. We don't have metal plates under our pillars so this is the only way....btw we live in Ny as well.
@WldBear6 жыл бұрын
That makes sense. After all, the water is only bonded at one spot. My pillars are metal and touch the wall, metal liner cap, and base, so I didn't have that issue.
@aliciar74476 жыл бұрын
do you have to ground the wires to a grounding rod?
@WldBear6 жыл бұрын
No. What you are doing according to the code is Bonding, not Grounding.
@aliciar74476 жыл бұрын
right but i thought you had to ground it as well?? we are getting ready to do our pools electrical thats why i ask. Thanks
@WldBear6 жыл бұрын
The process of bonding equalizes stray current between any conductive surfaces so you don't become the conduit. For example, the pool isn't bonded and stray electricity is in the soil. You walk up and touch the water. Because of the differential, you become the conductive path between the soil and water and get a shock. By bonding the soil around the pool, all metal surfaces, and the water, there is no differential and therefore no current flowing through you.

Barry Blanchard Ok, thanks. I bought my pump from a pool store and I had to change the regular3 prong that it came with to a 3 pole twist lock. I just ordered a 1.5 hp super pump for my semi inground. I had to move the pump over 15 ft from the pool, this is why I upgraded to a self priming pump. The super pump came with no cord what so ever. I'm going to use the 12 gauge wire the other pump came with and switch the wire inside from a 230 to a 115. I'm also running it on a dedicated 20 amp breaker. I also have a dedicated 50 amp double breaker hooked up for my future heating pump.

Good video, I understand the helpfulness it provides to the NY state residents. But here in Louisiana I have had my above ground pool for 5 years powered by a 50 ft. extension cord laying on the ground plugged into a 3 ft. extension off the pump. All going to a GFCI receptacle in my Garage. I have to literally unplug and roll up the extension cord every time I mow. Now for fairness, what I am doing with the extension cord is NOT the correct way to run exterior electrical. So I do plan to install a proper power feed to the pump which will be underground and sealed properly. I do not like the extension cord. But... Why would you have to bond a plastic pool to the ground cable going around the pool? That is dang nuts. I am an electrical engineer, and was taught by mt first grade teacher that plastic is an insulator, not a conductor. So that is like trying to ground the insulation of electrical cable itself. Freaking crazy. Which is why most of that non-sense you had to go through just to install an outdoor rated 120VAC pump in your backyard is a bunch of bull. Sure, I know it is the local code, but it is still bull. But even though, I do plan on correctly

@snatcher4205 жыл бұрын
@@johnnymoretti well now 7yrs since his reply and no one has die from it. I do the same here in Texas and no problem. So does the neighbor to the left and right with their above ground pools. There is a reason why wiring is encased in rubber you know, if you do maintenance on your extension cord (check for cracks and breaks) when you perform maintenance on the pool you should have no problems. Plus If a person's body starts to receive a shock, the GFCI senses this and cuts off the power before he/she can get injured. You can't live in fear all the time of what might happen. NY lol.....Go Texas and Louisiana why anyone would live in states with so much tax and regulations is beyond me.

And you probably say that "I've lived in Texas for 40 years and have never been hit by a tornado or flood". First time for everything, buddy. And to even suggest that "if a person's body starts to receive a shock, the GFCI senses this and cuts off the power before...the injury". Hogwash. If you're relying on only one source to protect your family, and having all the other parts of the system subpar to quality planning, then go ahead...use your family as the test dummy. I, on the other hand, install things right the first time. Only then do I have complete peace of mind. Go Yankees.
