Why should we avoid air gaps in the bark mix? When an orchid grows on the bark of a tree, its roots are partly in the air, aren’t they?
@OhioTropics7 күн бұрын
Hi there. I just meant to avoid large areas in the pot with no bark. Yes, you are correct. But bark mix, even when it is settled properly in a pot, still has plenty of air available to the roots. :-)
@Ashtonsnana9 күн бұрын
But what do I do with all the overgrown roots outside of the pot? Cut off or not?
@OhioTropics7 күн бұрын
I would leave those roots in the air and not trim them. Some people tuck them into the bark mix when they repot, but depending on how long the roots are, they may have a harder time adjust to being in a mix after they've gotten used to growing in the air.

This is very helpful, thank you! I have a pothos that has sat in the same place for several years and does really well. I recently took one of the longer vines and tacked it to the wall in the adjacent room. If that vine doesn't get the same light as the main plant, would that affect the leaves? They started turning yellow just on this vine and I am trying to figure out why. I also did neglect to water for a time period and then resumed, so maybe it is still healing, but I wondered if light levels affect the farther end of vines or just the main plant. I hope my question makes sense. Thank you!
@OhioTropics7 күн бұрын
You're very welcome! And I think I understand your question. As long as it's not too dark, it sounds like the yellowing could just be from neglecting to water. If the room where you tacked it onto the wall is pretty dark though, that could also be a contributing factor.
@ganymede137124 күн бұрын
2 of my Pothos leaves are yellow, but I actually water them everyday.... Is it because of overwatering?
@OhioTropics7 күн бұрын
It could potentially be. Are you needing to water daily? Is the surface of the soil still moist right before you water again? If it is, I would wait until the surface dries out before watering.

I’m going to repot a pt palm that has a single trunk that’s leaning or bent to an extreme. Is there a way to repot it that would encourage the trunk to straighten over time? I’ve tried placing the trunk straight up and down in the pot but then the leaves all look like they’re sideways. Thanks for any advice!
@OhioTropics28 күн бұрын
It probably would be difficult to straighten out completely, but's hard to say! Is the trunk itself very stiff? Does it budge at all?

Propagation will take place faster if you do not change the water. Changing it once to twice a week, should be replaced by once, one time, at the one month mark. And even then, if there is not a lot of visible algae, it may not need to take place at all during the root propagation period.
@michaelcarnohanАй бұрын
If you're interested, it could be a follow up video to test this. 😉
@michaelcarnohanАй бұрын
The reason behind it is enzyme release by the cuttings that repair the other cuttings and promote growth. The signalling of this by multiple cuttings is greater than by one alone. And is beneficial. If you change the water, you lose this benefit.

I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for commenting :-)

@OhioTropics28 күн бұрын
It was a newer plant at the time that the video was made. More light will help your plant grow more sturdy though :-) Don't be afraid to give it direct sun. They can take it easily (especially indoors).

After only having my orchid for a few weeks the flowers are drying up I did fertilize once and changed to an orchid soil
@OhioTropics28 күн бұрын
Keep in mind that when you purchase an orchid, especially if all the flowers are open, you don't know how long they have been open for and the flowers could be near the end of their lifespan. Add to this the change in environment, and it can affect things even more. Just know that with good care, your orchid will rebloom every year and once your plant gets used to your environment, you will be able to enjoy your flowers for a longer period of time :-)

Hi there. I usually cut all the stems off after blooming. But now I have a phalaenopsis orchid that has pushed a stem right out of the top leaf, and so I'm not sure if I can cut that stem off at the base, because I'm worried that there might not grow new leafs at that spot. Have you ever had such a case, and how would you go about it?
@OhioTropicsАй бұрын
When that one is done, if you'd like to cut it down, you can just leave about an inch of that stem at the base so that you don't get to close to the leaves. I've never actually had this happen personally, but I have heard of this happening. Good luck!

That is very interesting. One thing I am missing is while is very important to shake off the excess water from the plant, in nature there is noone to do that. May be natural inviroment is more windy so the plant dry out faster....???
@OhioTropicsАй бұрын
That's a great question! The main reasons are that there is air circulation outdoors (wind) and usually warmer temperatures, so these contribute to the plants drying out without it being a concern.

Love this video, and I return to it often. What do you think of orchid pots that have openings on the inner plastic pot (clear plastic) as well as the outer pot? My orchids are doing well, but I am a slave to watering them. (I use your soaking method).
@OhioTropicsАй бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video! Those pots are great, but certainly not 100% necessary. One thing to be careful of is that the potting medium will dry out more quickly so you likely will need to water more frequently. Otherwise, if you can keep up with the watering, the added air to the roots is great.
