Plus, George Miller, the creator of Mad Max, has said that the films don't have a fixed canon, lore, or timeline. The first three films are standalone stories in the same universe, similar to comic books about the same character in different timelines. However, the first film, Mad Max, does include black and white flashbacks to events from The Road Warrior, the second film. However, the timeline for the Mad Max franchise is complicated; Fury Road takes place around 2050, while Furiosa is set 15 years prior. Despite the confusion, George Miller confirms that Furiosa occurs 15 years before Fury Road, focusing on Furiosa's backstory. While, Fury Road does introduce Furiosa and takes place right after Thunderdome. The movie also shows a post-apocalyptic social order, with nuclear warfare destroying most of the greenery and a group of children trying to build a new civilization in the remains of Sydney. So, as much as Fury Road is set in a different timeline from the original trilogy, the complementary comic books attempted to directly connect the events of the original trilogy with Fury Road. I'm think the reason why they chasing tornadoes in this film is because of their goal is that they feeding bunch of sensors (aka drones) to the belly of the beast (which is the tornado) in order to develop a better advance severe weather warning system. However, in the original movie, the plot of the film is that the goal is ultimately to feed a bunch of sensors into the belly of the beast in order to develop a more advanced warning system. So, in this sequel, the new main characters are doing the same thing is deploy a scientific tornado instrument called Dorothy into a tornado and feed sensors into it to develop a better warning system. (Which is the same thing). 🌪🌀🌪
