To stop this on grinding wheels is easy, move the locomotives evenly split between the trains and never more than 5000 feet in length. That is have a locomotive every 1600 feet and this will stop this.

I know when they get that kind of wheel slip that kind of decimates the track and wheels

First I thought this super High speed camera showing very slomotiob video

It needed some push from the rear locomotive. Once the momentum is gained the rear locomotive can turn itself off. That grinding is not good for the wheels or the track. It is the kind of wear and tear that unnecessarily lead to derailing.
