That second unit has a seriously disfunctional wheelslip control system! There is a set of controls in each unit that monitor for this situation and are supposed to step down power to keep this from happening. So, either it is out of calibration or is totally broken. Sure does make for a pretty show though!
@BossSpringsteen693 жыл бұрын
You are the first person i scrolled down to that got it right, and,ill stop commenting with others about this. Those GP38's are well over 40 years old and as our master mechanic told me on several occasions, the wheel slip modules on these older units fail and we have no replacement in the shop. Were lucky if we ever can find them.
@BadlandNP3 жыл бұрын
@@BossSpringsteen69 The worst part is the wheels are getting burnt and cut while spinning so much. They will need changed out sooner and that is a large expense. The potential for a fire starting in some grease and oil buildup could cost the unit, if not more. Fun to watch, but not to pay for!
@wishusknight30092 жыл бұрын
EMD still made replacement modules for them up until at least a couple of years ago. Not sure if they are pricey or not though. I would imagine they are.
@sw61882 жыл бұрын
@@BossSpringsteen69 Why don't they replace them with a modern traction control system like Brightstar or similar? Surely it would be more economic to do that than allow a loco to be spinning up like this because a) it's damaging the wheel sets and the track, and b) it's not assisting the lead loco when it's just spinning so it's not pulling its weight (pun intended).
@pootispiker2866 Жыл бұрын
The protection against this kind of slip, a synchronous slip, isn't present on dash 2 equipped GP locomotives because they don't use motor transition. On an SD38 and other DC, the locomotive's control system automatically changes from series-parallel to parallel for high speed operation. This changeover cuts alternator output and takes several seconds for the load to be reapplied,allowing for the wheels to stop slipping before the locomotive immediately makes backward transition. On a geep the motors are permanently wired in parallel while motoring, so this did not happen. As far as the IDAC (instantaneous detection and correction of wheel slip) or whatever replacement board was concerned, no slip was occurring at all. When the dash 2 wheel slip board fails, a second system controlled by the wheel slip relay takes over, though this is not as quick to respond since that relay, among other things, makes the load regulator start reducing excitation. IDAC would be more rapid, using the SCR for the traction generator to limit output. If that too fails, this kind of thing can happen

Used to know someone on an automotive form that was a train engineer and he said sometimes communications issues between it and the lead locomotive would cause this and basically the locomotive that was having the issues would end up welding itself to the rails if it got bad enough.

I don't know anything about trains, so, some questions : Would the extra traction of a third engine have solved this problem ? If so, was one not available, or would it have taken too much time, or would it have been too expensive ? Edit : I have now read some of the comments, some of which imply human error or hardware damage, which if corrected would have allowed the two engines to handle this job by themselves.

These engines are very old and the wheel slip modules fail and the wheel slip modules are hard to come by nowadays. All the engineer can do is keep modulating the throttle and, as long as there is momentum and speed is increasing it's ok. Sometimes we don't have the option of adding an extra locomotive. It takes a certain finesse coupled with experience to do this right.
@BossSpringsteen693 жыл бұрын
@@quillmaurer6563 They know, they might not have had any other option but to take the train with the cars. If yo can get the momentum to keep increasing it's ok sometimes. Sometimes we tell our managers what we think about our trains projected performance based on our experience but, management over rules our suggestions sometimes. All we can do is sit back and keep working. Case in point my train left the yard with two locomotives but only one was working. We told our manager that we needed another unit just in case. This manager based is decision on the cars scheduled to our train for pickup. When we got to the CN yard we had more cars for our train than scheduled because we left so late from our yard that other cars from another train made it to our train because we were so late arriving at our pickup yard. Had we left our yard earlier we would have dropped our cars off at the CN yard and get the original scheduled cars and left, and, we would have missed the connection with the additional cars from the other train.. The CN yardmaster was none to happy to hear that we had to leave those cars because we were under powered.

The second rail car after the open boxcar is an auto rack for hauling new cars. I had a job unloading them during the 80s. They are triple deck for passenger cars, double deck for trucks and taller vehicles. Sometimes thieves would break in and rip out all the car stereos. More often hobos would get in and you'd find the evidence, such as food cans, ragged old clothes, maybe a turd in the corner of the rail car, but the hobos usually didn't mess with the new cars (if the rail car wasn't already empty) because they just wanted a ride, and if they were discovered and there was no damage to the new cars they'd probably be allowed to just leave.
