As I said earlier. I put spice in quotes as it was the onlookers, who kept saying he was on spice. Personally, I didn't think he was. I suspected he might be having a manic episode, but without knowing him, I couldn't really speculate.

Not bad, just too quite. Only need to add more background sound, and still lack echo.

Whale: "So what makes you young smegs so sure that you'll definitely be famous actors and writers?" Gatiss & Shearsmith: " Because we're gay. Which means that we will never be denied anything that we want within the media industry. Ever."

Love this period of British history, early 90s, when we weren't very confident on telly.

I hate conversations like this, where you dread pausing to gather your thoughts even for a split second because you know the other person will immediately sense an opportunity to interrupt

Young Mark Gatiss and Reece Shearsmith on The James Whale show in 1993. 0141am 18.7.23 i wonder who it was fiddling the books.. can he now tell us... and embarrass everybody involved......?

Gatiss was going to attempt to explain something about the 'death drive and the pleasure principle' perhaps? It seemed to become difficult and embarrassing for him there because he realises how much projection you have to employ to get, um, maybe an 'intellectual' point across about human nature through the viewing or fetishization of horror. Unfortunately, he was in the company of James Whale (a lop headed tyrant) who he allowed to establish him as "nut" to the rest of the audience (and embarrass him by putting put a silly hat on him). All levels of sadism going on here XD! "I want to see" becomes "we" "other people" "them" and "they" who like to see such things also... Trump does this as a recent example. Always says the phantom "they" say this "they" say that to justify himself.

Oh the days when TV was just mad. Night time TV was stuff like this, Eurotrash, The Word.... I used to watch this show religiously back then. He transferred a lot of the ideas onto his TalkRadio show in the following years with regulars like Gary Jacobs (the lawyer at the start) making appearances and also that weird psychic guy Acura I think his name was. Good times.

Channel 4 especially, back then you felt lucky that such a channel was free as so much of it's shows felt like they belonged on cable, it was the home of the surreal. Now all they play is re-runs of American sitcoms, which was semi-tolerable until Frasier ended.

James Whale was a radio presenter, a very energetic and gabby presenter. This show was basically his radio show except done on the telly. You can see that he can't be doing with dead air - any brief pause, any tiny moment of reflection and he's straight in, filling the air with whatever comes into his head. That was just his style.

He still presents on talk radio I'm sure I heard him just recently. He.. I'm not sure if it's the cancer drugs or whatever but he can be very short tempered and aggressively pushy with his opinion on things where I know for a fact he is wrong. I tend to avoid him as it grates, it's not enjoyable. Tend to avoid? I flat avoid him tbh, I've had enough. I can remember him back in the day and he wasn't so .. bad. Or maybe I never noticed..

Young Mark Gatiss and Reece Shearsmith on The James Whale show in 1993. james whale not to be confused with the james whale of universal horror movies fame which probably was the confusion.... old mark gatiss thinking he'd gone to engage with a chat about horror movies and ended up in a scuffle regards tv execs fiddling books... and the wee number 9 fella wondering if he'd get out of the studio alive... ummmmmmmmmmm.... interesting...
