I WAS DRIVING THE RACE (#24, winner SP9-PAM) and allow me to bring you a different perspective: the track was very drivable after 5 SC laps by Sunday afternoon. There was little reason to not continue running behind the SC for another two laps and then re-assess, other than the fact that strategy was starting to come into play and some cars were coming in to pit and the train was starting to go out of sequence. Hindsight may be 20/20 -- but anyone there will tell you the fog was 100% clear by 15:15.

I honestly feel this track is too dangerous for multi class racing in inclement weather. Seems like each and every year there's a major incident with one of the class leaders ruining their race! Luck should not be one of the biggest factors when it comes to the outcome of a race!
@Maenfy10 сағат бұрын
Well is it luck though? I would call it a risk. Yes it costs time to wait behind those cars but it reduces the risk of being caught in such an accident. I wouldn't call the Nürburgring too dangerous in this scenario though. We have plenty of these crashes in Le Mans every year and that has a lot less cars on a easier track.

just offer racers the option to retire if they are scared and let others race in the fog
@liviu54319 сағат бұрын
That's the right way. Racing shouldn't be all about safety
@Maenfy10 сағат бұрын
Well that's not how it works though. This also influences the safety of the track marshalls on track (that can't be seen if there is fog) and the reputation of the Nürburgring if something should happen.

Everyone who loves this race was so disappointed by how it ended up. My only thoughts on this beyond the usual "safety first" takes we all basically agree on, is maybe since this race is becoming considered the best of the year by many people, to find another solution to this fog issue since it crops up so often. Red flagging 1/2 the races from the last few years suggests maybe the policies and safety procedures could use another look. Why not drive an ambulance out to the crashed vehicle and relocate them to the nearest fog-clear area where the helicopter waits...? Would drivers and track owners really have an issue with this?
@Maenfy10 сағат бұрын
Well isn't the point of a helicopter rescue to be fast? Loading a driver (who is seemingly badly injured else he wouldn't need to be airlifted) into an ambulance, to then drive him somewhere (on a 25 km track) to then transport him into a helicopter seems like a really big delay to me. It wasn't just the helicopter though. If two marshalls posts can't see each other the ADAC can't run a race.
@gchampi2Күн бұрын
Disappointing, but that's the 'Ring for you. Weather has stopped the race before, and it will stop the race again. With fog on the track, it becomes impossible to race safely, so it's better to stop the race than to risk anyone's safety. The race will be back next year, something that wouldn't be true if there had been a major disaster...

I have not yet seen a proper reason why there was no reastart in the morning. The footage you posed of the heavy fog during the morning safety car laps taken from the high mounted static cameras around the course was not what was being shown through the in car cameras. I had to watch the race through the in car cameras because the English language feed was region blocked in North America, so I watched all five pace laps at the end alternately from the 16, 72 and 911 and the directors switched them between the front and rear cameras. There was no place on the track where the fog kept the in car cameras from seeing as far as the terrain allowed. There was a massive difference in visibility showing between cameras mounted a meter off the ground and the ones 5 to 10 meters off the ground. Was there something that those elevated track side cameras were needed for other than showing us the race? I know F1 has stopped or delayed sessions in recent years when they lost wifi and couldn't see their CCTV cameras. That could be a reason, but it would be nice for them to have said it before hand. The question about the helicopter was supposedly asked on one of the two language broadcasts and the second hand reporting was that no it was not a problem. I guess the big take away from this is that if you have given up on the race DONT put the cars back on the track at all. Not many people would be upset if the only pictures they ever saw were from the elevated cameras, or the in cars from when the red was thrown- I watched the 44's trip back to the pits after the flag had been thrown and it was horror movie stuff, I think he was navigating by his side window watching the track edge. Or be prepared to explain why the view of the overhead camera was more important to safety than the view out the windscreens. Did anyone pick up any radio traffic by the cars out on that track on those parade laps? What were they saying? Also how much was the 'brighting' effect CCDs have of making twilight at dawn and dusk look brighter at play in the driver cams- and why didn't the cameras around the track get the same benefit?

I have to agree with you, Jonah, and with others here. It is disappointing the race had to end early, but with the fog blanketing the circuit the way it did, and there being no visibility at all, driver safety is far more important compared to what could have been a grandstand finish.
@liviu54320 сағат бұрын
Why drivers safety is so important?
@JamalRaceКүн бұрын
It's not only about the visibility on the track.. emergency helicopters can't fly in these conditions which mean if anything went wrong it would be a disaster.. our entertainment should not be on the cost of the safety of all the participants

The cars could've run in the fog, many drivers said it was ok and perfectly fine to race. The biggest factor however, was the fact that the medical helicopters wouldn't be able to fly under these conditions and the race cannot be held without those. We had that situation a few times in the past already, it's also not uncommon to postpone the start of VLN/NLS races due to fog, especially the races earlier and later in the year.

I mean that's just how endurance racing works sometimes. The Spa 24h were also interrupted multiple times, the winners still won the Spa 24h though. The name of the event doesn't change based on time raced.

You don’t always get what you want in life. There are factors that out of anyone’s control which has resulted in what happened in this year’s race. I’m happy that the organisers made the right choice as the air ambulance wouldn’t be able to take off in the event of a serious accident. I firmly believe that endurance racing fans have become just a sulky as F1 and NASCAR fans and what’s being said over social media over the weekend have solidified my thoughts.
@TheAlphaDingoКүн бұрын
not just the drivers but the track marshals needed to be protected as they often had to head onto parts of the track to clear debris or tend to stopped cars. Way too dangerous all things considered. A shame but hopefully the racing gods will ensure Le Mans will be extra epic

The Reason without watching the whole video: FOG
@dusfor72Күн бұрын
It is often mentioned, the helicopter can't fly, as if it is needed to be available. Yes, it would contribute to safety, but there is no rule stating this. Races in Germany are running under the rules of the DMSB and one of the rules is that marshals must be able to see the colleagues at the previous and following posts. As for this race this was absolutely not the case at multiple locations and also was changing rapidly. I think race-control wanted to give it a try, probably by bringing some heat to the track and lifting the fog by that while this observing the situation out there. A word to everyone moaning out there. Come to the track, find a place like Flugplatz or Bellof-S, imagine there is Fog and a car crashes. For us marshals there is no chance to warn following cars as we do not see the track an so are not aware that there is something. So, what will happen when the next car is blindly running into it? Means, absolutely correct decision of Walter Hornung !

Let's put safety aside, assuming this the foggiest 24H Nurburgring race it could've gotten the most publicity and views and the crashes from the fog would've attracted way more viewers plus if someone died viewership would definitely go up so I'd say they should've continued the race despite the reprocussions

This also isn’t like the 6 hours of spa where they could simply extend the time by the red flag period. This was a 24 hour race and would also have been logistically unfeasible to extend the time period.

I was pretty annoyed by the fact that i waited the whole time for it to continue, but they did the right thing to prioritize driver safety. Still could’ve rescheduled the race anyway though.

8 hours of racing in what is supposed to be a 24hr race that’s not even 40% of the race completed. I understand that when the conditions end up being foggy to the point you can’t see is dangerous and there four you have to stop the race for safety reasons I understand that. But just doing 40% of the race I’m not sure if the race results should stand as they are because of how little running they got.
@gchampi2Күн бұрын
Were the N24H part of a championship, I would agree. As it's a standalone event, the result doesn't really affect anything other than the drivers & teams ego's, even if it went the full 24 hours.
