My mother was older when she had me - and I'm no longer so young myself - yet I am still fascinated, and sad, about how she used to speak of flocks of birds flying over their farm which darkened the sky. The speed of these types of declines is scary.

Great vlog, John! Awesome start to the season and glad to hear the loon pairs are well. Good points about loon ethics, I once unknowingly was staked out at a sight a loon was building their nest at. My first thought was oh great this is epic! But then realized I was unwanted and paddled the heck out of dodge. Looking forward to the upcoming vlogs!

Thanks Liam! And glad you shared that anecdote, even still sometimes I come across some situation in wildlife photography and get excited but then have to check that and think things through from the animals perspective. I will check out your new wildlife video, glad you had time to make one amid the home remodel. With 3 kids myself, the most home improvement I can muster right now is clearing a path on the floor so no one trips!

@@johnwelchphotographyI could only imagine trying to do it all with kids! That’ll come soon enough but for now the home reno is already cutting down my wildlife time! All good problems to have. I’m headed up to Acadia (Schoodic side) for a few days during the 4th, seeing your vlog has got me thinking of targeting loons at Jones Pond. Good luck, talk soon!

Nice video, great photos. I recently saw a juvenile Common Loon in the surf off Monterey, California. This surprised me because I always assumed that common loons were a bird of the Northeast United States. Now I realize they’re fairly common up and down coastal California
@johnwelchphotographyАй бұрын
Thanks for checking it out! Yes, both common loons and pacific loons spend winters, and into early spring off the California coast I believe and then I know they breed in Oregon, Washington, and Canada. The ones you see that far south off the coast are probably in the more drab looking winter plumage right? Beautiful country out that way!

Incredible footage, I visited Bonaventure Island in Perce Quebec in 2022. I was on that same boat taking images with my canon R6 800mm 1.4x… the boat was rocking hard, but I was able to capture some awesome images, even of the mating ritual. Gannets are amazing. Thx for sharing
@johnwelchphotography2 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and sharing your experiences out there Nancy! I took the direct employee boat each morning to hike to the colony before anyone else arrived both days I was there, but kind of regret not taking the regular route the circles around the island to get a perspective from the water or broader shots. Must have been a bit of a challenge from the rocking boat with that much focal length. Glad you got to experience this place and the gannets too. It really is amazing out there.

This is probably the best documentary on this year's gannet colony! Absolutely amazing shots and videos. We're lucky to see a few up close each year in Massachusetts. You're fortunate enough to have seen the whole colony!
@johnwelchphotography2 ай бұрын
Thanks Harris! I know what you mean, usually around us the best gannet sighting we can hope for is a random shore side flyby. So, I definitely was grateful to be able to experience the breeding colony up close for 2 days. It was nice that it was "close" enough to drive and van camp. I was happy that it was foggy all day both days I was there, to be able to shoot all day and then on the last day it broke apart for the sunset shots on the big sea stack arch.
