Ethical Notes: Most of this was filmed and photographed with 800mm equivalent reach and sometimes further cropped. Further I didn’t follow the birds around and sat around in the same area for a while and waited for the plover to approach me before I got close enough for this. Piping plovers are federally classified threatened species and listed as an endangered species in states like New Hampshire and Maine, so it is important to be aware of their nesting sites and regulations so as not to disturb them, especially with dogs.

Very adorable little birds. Wouldn't it be great if people could spend more time observing nature and respecting it for what it is. The world would be a happier place.

Yes, I know. Thankfully they are rebounding pretty well for now. But there still isn't a ton from a wider perspective. Thanks for checking out the video!

A lot of good information here! I camped two nights last September on Assateague Island and had a blast photographing the Piping Plovers and other birds. They were very interesting to watch. I am very glad to hear their numbers are on the rise and hopefully will remain that way!

They actually go past Nova Scotia. We have them here, in Newfoundland along our shores. My brother in-law actually works with a group for the birds conservation.

I came to youtube because I want to go to the beach to do some birding today but the rain is deterring me. I have yet to see a piping plover here in southeastern North Carolina, and hearing their little piping on your video made me smile so big. Shorebirding is a major special interest of mine, and this video encourages me to brave the rain for the sake of attaining the joys of observing delightful birds who are not so deterred by the rain as humans. And I will keep your advisory to wait ahead of the birds and back off after a time in mind, as I have likely been stressing out the darling birds with my strafing at a distance in my quest to see them. Great advice! Hopefully I will see a piping plover this winter season -- I'll keep an ear out!

That is great to hear of your joy in shorebirds! I love them too obviously. In winter, I wouldn't worry about stressing them out as much as when they are brooding nests or guarding chicks in spring and early summer. Less impactful at that time of year. I think the best strategy is to observe and area for a while, if you locate some in the distance see which way they are headed, get way ahead of them and wait. Most times they will come up to you at that point and not be bothered. Good luck!

Thanks so much! I appreciate you guys checking it out. A different side of natural world in New England than the forest and mountain creatures we love, but worth checking out and protecting.

@@johnwelchphotography We love it all too, John. (Libby here) We have a blast with the plovers and terns. Those tiny cotton balls with toothpick legs running around like cute fluffy Mr Magoos. How can people not adore them!? And YES, keep your dogs away, close the beaches and let these little creatures thrive. Loved the video. Thank you again for the message.
