The beginning of Claremont’s sentinel arc is great as he seems to be getting his characters personalities and quirks narrowed down. My favorite part was how Banshee, Wolverine, and Jean busted out of Dr. Lang’s facility and trashed numerous sentinels only to discover that they were not in earth but in space.

Sam Kusek! FromBoom, good buddy of mine. He got me to do a drawing of this too. But back to Blood Meridian it is brutal as hell. I get putting it down, it does build to a great ending though. But it and the novel Painted Bird took me to my limit where they almost made brutality boring because it never stops.
@chrisandersoncomics3 күн бұрын
Yeah, I don’t usually find myself affected by things like that. But the combo of ingesting two bleak and ultraviolent things at the same time really altered my mood. I’m truly glad to have found this weird masterpiece, though.
@MichaelEspey-hp1jt10 күн бұрын
This issue was interesting with the weird dream Professor X has and that it would affect the team when this Erik The Red attacks them with a mind-controlled Havok and Polaris. I love how Storm basically powers up and crushes Polaris who is also a powerful mutant herself. Still that airport is gonna need some serious repairs and the fact is we will soon be heading into the first major arc of this sixteen-year run.
@JohnDCochise7 күн бұрын
Good points Michael. Storm and Polaris are definitely on a different power level in this issue than the dudes who are basically punching each other on the ground. The space warfare holocaust is an interesting way to start the issue and it's really kind of shocking. You're not expecting it at all. Thanks for reading along with us and for the thoughts.

Sorry for the delayed response, I currently have Covid and it is a pain but this is the best I have felt all week long. My favorite part of this issue is Storm doing her best to fight through the demons to close the portal to hell. Also Banshee’s surprise to meeting Moira MacTaggert who is an attractive woman around his age instead of being 80 years old as he thought was hilarious and Wolverine’s first published use of his berserker rage to carve up the main demon who can heal. Seriously though if Cyclops had just talked to a therapist, those demons wouldn’t have escaped in the first place.
@chrisandersoncomics13 күн бұрын
I couldn’t agree more! Storm really steps up in this one. I love Moira running into the fray with a machine gun too.

When you create as many characters as Kirby and Lee did, there will be many amazing ideas that won't truely bear fruit until an amazing creator comes along later. It's often one who loved the product as is but always saw more potential in it, because there minds have taken it further before they even get on the project and wished to make it theirs, as much as its original creators. Because even though Kirby and Lee are the original creators, as they are now (the x-men) their as much Clearmonts as Kirby and Lee's, and he should be listed as a significant contributing creator on all books.
@MichaelEspey-hp1jt21 күн бұрын
This recap was very informative and thoughtful. Nightcrawler was the MVP due to how his teleportation and agility helped get the x-men into Valhalla Base. Colossus and Storm begin to have their awesome moments was great too but I want to talk about the ending most of all. Thunderbird’s death is one of the few comic book deaths that stayed permanent for several years and it was the intention at the time to tell the audience that this book doesn’t hold back unlike most superhero team books in regards to killing a main member. I am also sad that Thunderbird was killed cause he was a great character and he may have been killed off due to how he and Wolverine were similar as loudmouth rebels and it would’ve been interesting to see how if he had survived this mission how he and Wolverine’s rivalry would’ve developed and how different their arcs would’ve been. That’s all for now, keep up the great work.
@chrisandersoncomics21 күн бұрын
Yeah, and I have to add how wild it is that he is so developed and how much you care about him after only three issues. They were still figuring Wolverine out and it feels like they moved Thunderbird’s traits over to him as they began to focus on him more. I say that because this far, Wolverine has hardly uttered two words.
@MichaelEspey-hp1jt20 күн бұрын
Fair enough. I was only referencing wolverine mouthing off to both Angel and Jean and then about to pick a fight with an enraged Iceman that’s all.

I love the way the dialogue and artwork mesh well together and how it seemed like Thunderbird was set up as the main jerk of the team while Wolverine was just spider-man with a punisher-lite attitude and claws. I often wonder how things would be different if Wolverine. Was killed off and Thunderbird lived through this arc.

Love the idea of weekly reviews of the longest run by a single writer on a superhero comic by far. I like how they introduce the main characters before they fight the main villain Krakoa. Thunderbird’s recruitment is hilarious as he initially said no to Xavier until he was goaded into joining the new team.

Really interesting issue, and it really feels like Thunderbird is already being built up as the next leader and a major character. At this point Wolverine is the least interesting character, he just looks cool. I do wonder if Claremont wanted Thunderbird to take over or if he was Wein's guy, and as Claremont really takes the reins that's why he kills him off.

More comics need to purposefully look like they're well-read and beat up. Maybe that will keep them from being held without read. Sounds like both of you have done that well in the past. Ed Piskor and Jim Rugg figured out how to get a Free Comic Book Day version of Hip Hop Family Tree to look like it'd been written in and the marker had soaked through the paper from the front cover. I like that aesthetic and the thesis it contains.
