I feel like there are some japanese characters that bare similar traits because of the different concepts prevalent in modern japan. Like meruem and cell could both be plays on a bug that is considered perfect in japan or something. Not claiming thats the case here but the fact that you didnt even mention this possibility is worrying in regards to your perspective. overall tho good vid.

I always called Gon green Goku but the most he appears in the story he felt more unique and strange especially in the Chimera arc

I wonder though, making friends out of enemies... that sure helps built a better world, but... how much was that ideal influenced by the Americans beating the Japanese in WW2 and then building a new fresh relationship between the two countries afterwards.

I’d argue that Meruem is original, simply inspired in premise and design by perfect cell. His original personality was cruel and cold and very similar to cell in being an A$$hole. But he grew and became more human and understanding from his experience with komugi. One if my favorite points in his development was when he was just thinking of going to kill her and how fragile she is and so easy it’d be. Then when he goes to do it, he sees her being attacked by something else and protects her without thinking. He learned to people and fell in love. Cell is just a douche. A fun one but still just a total dick.

i dont understand how an anime fan can see meruem for the first time and not understand that him looking like cell is on purpose and cool. Like how can you get mad youve been watching hunter x hunter the whole time it did isekai the arc before this is a shounen that loves other shounen

Finding out that Yoshihiro Togashi referred to Akira Toriyama as a god through this video hit me pretty hard because I saw this video on March 20, 2024, so Toriyama died very recently as of writing this. I'm also shocked that Togashi came out and said this roughly a decade ago, so the guy was alive and well upon receiving such high praise. I'm sure Togashi is as devastated as Toriyama's fanbase, if not more so. R. I. P. Akira Toriyama

GOD I LOVE THIS!!! You put perfectly the things I've thought about OPM and why it's such a special story to me. I really love how ONE writes his stories, and OPM and Mob are some of my favorite anime because they have such profound messages. His ability to write optimistic nihilism (the whole "Nothing matters, but it doesn't matter that it doesn't matter" thing) subtly and make living in a way that's kind and caring to those around you seem worth living genuinely helped me through rough times. Thanks for reminding me of how great this story is!

Thank you! ONE is probably my favorite manga writer precisely because of what you said. His stories always seem to motivate me when I'm at my lowest. It took a lot of force of will to not go on a Mob Psycho tangent in this video because it would've made it too long lol

I dont need to watch any further to be able to tell you this, you're completely over-thinking things. No media work in the past 50 years has been completely original, you can tell when a mangaka is a fan of a different work because it shows. All of these manga and anime adaptions of those manga have been inspired by something else. Take for example the original Dororo (1967), you could say it paved the way for darker stories, i think Berserk mightve slightly been influenced by that manga, and you can see influences from berserk in so many works since its release, Naruto has some dragon ball influences, Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba has similarities to all 3 and hunter x hunter. Nothing is "original" these days. No need to over-think it ya know?

I really think HxH is exceptional. When as an artist you express yourself authentically, you realise that your handiwork is more than what you can imagine it to be. People who see it derive meaning that you could never articulate. They reveal patterns that you yourself may have been blind to. All art is a dialogue, isn't it? between the artist's expression and the viewer's reaction-- an intimate conversation. Most conversations are small talk, mundane and quickly forgotten. But extraordinary works like HxH are like those rare, treasured conversations that only become more memorable and precious with time.

Jujutsu kaisen, my hero academia and demon slayer are all failed derivative and generic asf. It's also funny cause now Toriyama got so lazy, he ripped off western comics.

Great video, I agree on every single point for how Togashi wrote on of the best battle shonen of all time. I also like how Naruto was influenced by Nen: by combining it with the ninjutsu of ninja legend with the complex and personalized powers that they have. Although I think it should be mentioned that Bleach's power system and structure is influenced by Saint Seiya's Cosmo powers, and I think that was missed, but a lot of people forget about Saint Seiya, and the other big 80s battle series Kinnikuman, Fist of the North Star, and Dragon Quest Adventure of Dai; but those series aren't officially translated. Anyways, great video.

It's kind of rude to say this about Cell when the whole arc centers around the theme of perfection and proving that he is superior to everyone and everything, even the things that constitute him. Cell wants to be better than the Sayan, better than the Namekian, better than the Humans, and hell, even better than he was in the future. The cell games helping him demonstrate his ideology. Yes, I prefer Meruem as a character too, but don't do Cell wrong by treating him like this. Great Video nonetheless ! ❤

1 quick thing: between YYH and HxH, Togashi did have another series called Level E, which also had a sub-theme of self expression and self understanding.
