BCk in late 66 I was returning after 2 yesterday in Vietnam having saved 7p00 dollars. I wanted a new c a r. After driving various. Uncle cars I pretty well had decided on either a 427 4e5 hp Cirvette or a 427 R Code Fairlane . It was early September and no dealer had either car let alone a demo thst I could drive. I contacted a really nice military auto broker out of OKC who told me he'd special order either car equipped as I wanted it for about a thousand or so off sticker. I was going to go to college and whatever I got was going to be my daily driver for a few years. The Fairlane equipped pretty much the way I wanted it was a few hundred less than the Vette. Ne I ther car could be had with AC and the Fairlane couldn't be ordered with less than 3.89 gears. I finally settled on the Vette which I got for 4585 dollars with the tricarb engine M21 4 speed Transistorized ignition big brake package and side exhaust. I got power windows and the AM Fm radio. And a high speed 3.36 posi rear end with the supposed hyper red line tires on rally sport wheels. It was a good choice although I had to replace the entirely inadequate wheel and tires with wider American 5 spoke mags and Good year Blue Steak tires. That said the car would top out at 155 at redline and punch thru the quarter at 13.06 at 107mph. And it did eat plugs but oh well. And had a thirst for 103 octane Cgevron Cusom Supreme. Whic at the time was around 30.9 per gallon. I never ever saw a 66 or 67 427 Fairlane on the street and did not realize how rare they were.. About 15 years later I started getting interested in Ford engines when I bought a Pantera culminating when I built a very accurate t e Thunderbolt clone e and a 498 a ll alloy cammer motor for my open road race 1969 tube frame ASCAR Chassis Mustang. It dawned on me along the way that a 1967 R Code Fairlane would have been a great car but a bad daily driver. Which perhaps was why so few were sold. I recall the Ford dealers at the time were very reluctant to special order one. Currently one of my 2 daily drivers is a 64 Fzirlane 500 with a 5 speed Tremec and a 410 hp 331 Ford stroker based on a e02. It's a white coupe with a gold interior and a fair amount of suspension mods. Very pleasant car.

Sorry Charlie. This is a 1966 Fairlane. I can tell by the taillights. 1966 models did not come with a hood scoop and only came with a 390 or 289. 1967 models came with a 300 ci 6, a 289, 390 and the illusive 427 side oiler

I had a chance to buy one of these, it was the 1974 NHRA champ here on the west coast. The guy wanted $10,000 with no motor, I wish I had bought that car. . . .It still had all the drag racing stickers and numbers on it.

Great race, that's actually me in the other lane driving my 1967 Coronet. At the time it had a Bowman Performance 451" Edelbrock Victor headed BB. You caught me really early in the run, were we running full 1/4 mile that day? I must have been dead LATE that hit haha!

Really was encouraging to see the continued interest in Racing the Famous Big Blocks of the 1960s. That Generation is almost gone along with a Lot of Knowledge and Skills on how to Build and Run those Drag Cars along with them. I do not know if the Companies that Build the Nascar big blocks for racing also manufacture New 427 Engines to use at the Drag strip, or how much they cost? Also the chance of finding a 1960s Fairlane, Thunderbolt or Comet sitting in someone's Garage would be real Rare.
