Question Shawn, since there is uplift and lava coming out here does this mean that somewhere on earth there is some land going down in a subduction zone.

Dr. Willsey, I well remember seeing those pedestal rocks on a drive north on 89 me and a friend of mine made up to Lee's Ferry some 25 years ago. Our intent was to do a little fly fishing on the river. In the event, we got a lot of exercise and some spectacular photographs, but no fish! Beautiful country up there.

Thanks for the update. I hope your family did not mind you taking some time out of your family vacation to prepare and record the update. It is amazing to see how quickly they were able to build new roads over the May 29 lava flows west of Grindavik, but I guess the flows were thinner at that location. The June flow across the road north of the Svartsengi power plant and Blue Lagoon is much thicker, as you mentioned.

Is this one of the previous cones from a prior eruption - that has become active again? If anyone knows ?

A pool that has a continuous inflow is not stagnant. It may appear to be stable in surface area from a particular viewpoint but logic tells us it has an outflow. Gllfi's latest drone glimpse shows a significant outflow to the south. Two lava streams are active one from each side of the active cone.

Do yourself and us a favor, and get a cordless headset like a Jabra Evolve or something .. that way your 3.5mm jack in combination with your beat-up-in-a-laptop-compartment-plug wont ruin the audio ;)

Thank you for the update, Shawn, it's very appreciated. Something of interest: The June 2024 issue of Smithsonian magazine has an article about scientists exploring the lava tubes of Fagradalsfjall, wearing protective gear of course, and finding metastable minerals and at one point a wall that was still glowing red with a temperature reading of nearly 600°C!

The pollution from gases over population centers is alarming. I feel especially bad for folks with asthma, children and the elders. ❓Are there any reports of a harmful impact on the animal life? ❓Do birds realize they should fly away❓Do Icelandic homes or large building complexes have filtered HVAC systems? I can imagine the air quality before the eruptions was excellent, so perhaps they haven’t needed air conditioning or filtered air systems. Sorry to besiege you with questions. That’s a sign, however, of how thought-provoking your videos are, Shawn. Thank you for being an island of intelligence amidst the choppy waters of sensationalism. ❤

Why does the uplift data look like the ground never deflated back to the original level since the beginning of these eruptive events? Does this mean the land is actually permantly deformed or is there a large amount of magma still within the chambers feeding the eruptions which will not allow the ground to return to the original height"

Another very easy to access cinder cone is Lava Butte near Bend, Oregon. You can drive to the top. Spectacular views of many volcanic features in all directions with helpful displays in the old fire lookout to tell you what they all are. Then, to the west, close-up views of the Three Sisters Cascade volcanoes. Lava Butte is quite similar to the one in this video, with an asymmetrical top, a lava flow that exited from its base, and a trail you can walk all the way around the rim of the crater.

This... series, of eruptions, shows that predictions are not 100% accurate...except uplift-erupt-deflate and repeat, repeat, repeat.

Drove through your area on the way to the ranch (Hatch Utah) - determined to stop at Craters NP but ran short of time (again). Did however stop in the Opal Capital of America and spent many hundreds of big US$ on opal jewelry for my wife and daughter. Maybe next trip in the fall...

Hello. If the reservoir of the magma gets empty in many years, the one under the Blue Lagoon, Could it collapse, fall in? The way it happened in The Kilowea Crater?

The South pond is not stagnant but drained by 3 lava tubes. One at the end of the pond draining to the South and 2 in each of the front corners of the little bay extending to the West. The left corner one goes first to the West then turns South and the tube in the right corner drains directly to the South.

I can hear the electrical feedback in the recording, and from that it is obvious that Iceland uses 50 HZ power, not 60 HZ like in the US.

I must not understand what direction of cooling means, because every line you drew in this video looks like it’s parallel to the direction of cooling not perpendicular. If the direction of cooling is from outside to inside, then perpendicular would mean parallel with the surface. That would result in exactly the formation that we do see if it were once a volcano. Am I misunderstanding something here?

I would have mistaken the red tuff for a post glacial alluvial sandstone, heated and compressed by cycles of volcanic activity and glaciation. Thanks for the education and opening our minds to everyday sights around us.
