I had friends from Ventura that were staying in Kalapana back in '85 or '86 when Kilauea first started coming back to life. They witnessed some of the biggest eruptions, they saw burning rocks the size of small houses being tossed in the air like pebbles. Soon after, Kalapana was gone.

Since I live here I visit the HVO webpage every day,. Thank you for making the more technical stuff understandable. Absolutely no felt quakes yet, but there's usually one in the 4-5 Ricther scale that'll happen before or not too long after an eruption.

Interesting that USGS says "all is fine, don't worry, just a few earthquakes", but the park closes Chain of Craters indicating that an eruption that could cut off the road could happen any time. Having ridden my bike down Chain of Craters in 2018 (all the way to Kalapana! (bikes are allowed past the barrier), I know how isolated it is down there. No cell phone signal. And no way to warn people to get out. However, as there is since 2018 the "emergency exit" that is very rough but passable very slowly, people stuck on shore could evacuate towards Kalapana if Chain of Craters back up to mai park site become impassible. (Going down Chain of Craters was extremely difficult because of extreme winds and I had to ride on left side of road to have a bit of shelter from the rock cuts until I was at low enough altitude that I got shelter the cliff, and at sea level, the winds were far mroe normal and died down as I traveled towards Kalapana.

Question ❓ is the depth of the earthquake determined from the top of the land or sealevel or...? So if there is a quake on a mountain of 2000m, and a quake at 1500m depth, is it then 'in' the mountain or at 3500m from the surface? Thanks in advance and keep up the great work.

From the top of Mauna Loa to the ocean depth next to the big island is about 28,000 feet. What is the likely hood for a catastrophic collapse / sloughing / landslide of a huge chunk of the southeast part of the island (both above and below sea level)? The island must be under tremendous strain and google earth shows fracture lines running perpendicular to where one would expect the vectors of strain to be. The extreme elevation differential, coupled with the forces possibly imparted by the Hawaii Hot Spot, looks to me to be a high risk of the collapse to happen. Aside from the devastation to the island itself, the resulting tsunami would travel thousands of miles.
@shawnwillsey
@shawnwillsey 17 күн бұрын
High consequences, but very low probability.
@herbieschwartz9246
@herbieschwartz9246 17 күн бұрын
Undoubtably, the older islands had similar surface and underwater topography at similar ages. Is there evidence that these older islands ever had massive landslides that would indicate the propensity for the big island to have a sloughing event also?
@scottwilson8105
@scottwilson8105 17 күн бұрын
Thousands of years ago such slumping and collapse events happened. These resulted in the 1,500 feet and higher sea cliffs on the northeast shores of the Big Island and Molokai. USGS says there are no signs that anything similar will happen in the near future. That doesn't stop the ridiculous conspiracy theorists from believing the "Hilina Slump" is going to drop a chunk of the Big Island south of Halema'uma'u into the ocean someday soon.
@herbieschwartz9246
@herbieschwartz9246 17 күн бұрын
I've never heard of the "Hilina Slump" conspiracy. I'm just an aging engineer with some background in geology and my thoughts extrapolated from logic and analysis of information. In this case, Google Earth provided the information that directed me to ask the question.
